WINERY
OF THE MONTH:
FERRARI-CARANO estate winery, in Dry Creek Valley--an inspired wine growing
region--is blessed with soil and climate that support all the Ferrari-Carano varietals at
an equally high level of quality. Dry Creek Valley is 16 miles long and
two miles wide with more than 6,000 acres of vines. FERRARI-CARANO
has two winemaking locations, as Rhonda Carano
explains. "With our
nineteen-estate vineyards in four appellations totaling over 1400 acres, Don and I
realized that we needed two separate winemaking locations to produce our world-acclaimed
wines--one concentrating on white wines and the other on red wines. Our winemaking
team agreed--in order to attend to every detail to produce the best wines
possible." Ferrari-Carano's Estate Winery
Villa Fiore (1981) has the Hospitality Visitor's Center. The main focus here
is on stellar white wines. "We harvest our grapes at night, when
temperatures are the coolest, giving us crisp and intense fruit flavors," Rhonda
says. "From the moment the grapes enter the winery, the winemaking teams
objective is to interpret the individual characteristics of each vineyard block, based on
the growing techniques, soil, clonal differences and flavor."
All Ferrari-Carano wines are vinified and remain in separate lots until blending. The Fume Blanc is crafted from seven of our estate vineyards in Dry Creek, Alexander and Russian River Valleys. Alexander Valley Chardonnay is created from eleven different estate vineyards and is a blend of fourteen different clones and selections. The Reserve Chardonnay is primarily from Ferrari-Carano Napa Carneros ranch while the Russian River Valley Chardonnays are all single vineyard designates from premier locations in this appellation.
FERRARI-CARANOs Mountain Winery Estate for
red wines
Located on RockRise Mountain in eastern Alexander Valley, the red-wine winery sits
at 1,200 feet. Nighttime harvested grapes are hand picked after each vineyard
block is sampled daily for optimum picking time of these small berries. This
state-of-the-art, gravity-flow winery was specifically designed to handle the fruit as
gently as possible to make lush, complex, rich wines.
"As with our white wines, our red wines are produced from a variety of different clones and selections from Ferrari-Carano's two mountain vineyards, RockRise and LookOut. Our low-yielding, non-irrigated mountain grape vines add depth and character to the wines."

ALMADEN VINEYARDS' (founded 1852) historical emphasis on quality and innovation has cast the brand as an industry trendsetter. Almaden has jettisoned the heavy glass jugs for the more carbon efficient BIB (Bag-in-Box) packaging. Industry studies show that BIB packaging has 85% less packaging waste and a 55% smaller carbon footprint than comparable glass packaging. Consumers and the industry applaud Almaden's move to more carbon-efficient BIB packaging, said Jon Fredrikson, wine industry consultant. Almaden has been part of many peoples first wine experience, and the BIB format is growing as consumers discover its many advantages, including cutting the carbon footprint, increased product life and saving money for cost-conscious consumers," Fredrikson said.

ROBERT MONDAVI Winery's Next Taste3:
Due to the unfortunate nexus of
the unprecedented economic downturn and the closing of our venue, Copia, Robert Mondavi
Winery has decided to take a one year hiatus from Taste3. The quality of the
event is our number one priority and given these unforeseen circumstances, we believe that
postponing the next Taste3 to early summer 2010 will allow us the best
opportunity not only to secure the right venue but also to build the critical level of
sponsor and sales support that makes Taste3 possible. These are challenging
times both for event sponsorship and for ticket sales and Taste3 depends on
strength in those key elements.

NEW RELEASES (quotes are winemakers' comments; prices vary from store to store)
New KENWOOD VINEYARDS Reserve Reds: Quality defines Kenwood's wine philosophy. "Each wine--from Kenwood Table Wines to the Artist Seriesshowcases quality premium grapes and meticulous winemaking. The bold and complex, limited editions of 2005 Kenwood Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and 2007 Kenwood Reserve Pinot Noir illustrate the distinctive Reserve style. The wines are are rich in oak nuances and intense fruit. While the Kenwood Reserves are approachable in their youth, the red wines are unusually age-worthy, and will gain complexity and polish with cellaring. ¶ Reserve wines receive special care: precise vineyard blocks, special oak barrels and the length of aging, and the selection of individual barrels for inclusion. Kenwood Vineyards has produced Reserve Chardonnays, Sauvignon Blancs, Merlots, Zinfandels and Pinot Noirs for several years; however, the new Kenwood Reserve 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon debuts this year (2009. Its deep color is matched by similarly concentrated aromas and flavors. Aromas and flavors of cassis, nutmeg, cigar box and mint are complemented by pomegranate and notes of sweet vanilla oak. The fruit is powerful fruit, and its viscous texture leads to a smooth, impressively balanced finish. Approachable now, this young Cabernet promises impressive cellar evolution. Only 1,000 cases of this inaugural 2005 Kenwood Vineyards Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($30) were produced." ¶ The 2007 Kenwood Reserve Pinot Noirs aromas showcase raspberry and blueberry, together with a generous dollop of Asian spice. Vibrant raspberry and cherry flavors are accented by a subtle note of forest earth. Vivacious, yet elegant on the palate, this medium-bodied Pinot Noir is approachable now, but has sufficient integrated tannins and natural acidity to develop additional nuances with brief cellaring. Only 2,100 six-bottle cases of the 2007 Kenwood Vineyards Reserve Pinot Noir ($30) were produced; both limited to select markets and the Kenwood Vineyards tasting room."
"Spring pleasures include fresh, casual-character wines like the 2008 Kenwood Vineyards White Table Wine and 2008 Kenwood Vineyards Sonoma County Gewürztraminer. Fruity, crisp and easy to enjoy, they are wines as appealing as this season. ¶ Style suits these wines to spring, both the grapes and the winemaking where fresh, bright fruit is the dominant element. Kenwood White Table Wine blends Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay primarily from throughout Sonoma County; the Sauvignon Blanc is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks for fresh character while the Chardonnay is barrel-fermented to add weight to the palate, but then promptly racked into stainless steel to keep the oak influence to a minimum. Kenwood Gewürztraminer comes from the coldest corners of the Russian River Valley, and is cold fermented and stored until bottling exclusively in stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh character. They are bottled just months after the vintage to enjoy at their youthful best."

BERINGER KNIGHTS VALLEY wines have a "distinctive quality that can only be created from the rustic, unspoiled vineyards and unique alluvial soils that make up this property," Winemaker Laurie Hook says, "with its volcanic, well-drained soils that are perfectly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon." Bob Steinhauer and Ed Sbragia were instrumental in establishing Knights Valley as an AVA in 1982. The vineyard is located 17 miles northwest of the winery. "The red and white Bordeaux varietals we grow there possess rich flavors that are unique to this 600-acre vineyard in Sonoma County," Hook says. "All these wines are a great value and deliver the complex, satisfying flavors we all crave. The proprietary name Alluvium name pays homage to the alluvial soils of Knights Valley, and nothing satisfies me more than tasting the first sauvignon blanc grapes during harvest and being able to showcase those enticing flavors in the glass a year later. And the red grapes consistently reward me with wonderful fruit to work with. The 2007 Alluvium Red is ripe with cassis and cedar aromas, hints of cardamom and cocoa, sun-ripened cherries, vanilla bean and lip-smacking blackberry."

FRANCISCAN: Franciscan is one of Napa Valley's most venerable wineries, reaching back more than three decades. Franciscan wines take their signature style - rich, vibrant flavors framed by supple tannins - from the ideal climate offered by Napa Valley's cool, southern half and from the time-honored tradition of small-lot winemaking, blending from hundreds of barrels to craft fine wines that fully express the classic Bordeaux varieties. ¶ Franciscan was founded in 1972 by a group of lawyers and doctors from San Francisco who decided to try turning their passion for wine into a business. In 1985, Agustin Huneeus, a Chilean exile who had built Concha y Toro in his native country, took over the helm at Franciscan. Huneeus refocused the winery on using the superlative grapes growing in its own vineyards, rather than sourcing from outside. ¶ Today, Franciscan's wines are crafted under the exacting eye of Janet Myers, who came to Franciscan in August 2003 as associate winemaker after working in the Margaret River region and Beaulieu Vineyard, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars and Louis Martini. The winery remains committed to its tradition of small-lot winemaking, with small batches averaging just 150 to 1,500 cases. BEAULIEU VINEYARD (BV): Georges and Fernande de Latour named their property BEAULIEU (beautiful land) and planted the surrounding land--including the sloping alluvial-fan benchland of the Napa River--to vineyards BV 1 and BV 2. That terroir has become the backbone of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon--first crafted with grapes in 1936 by André Tchelistcheff, who tasted the wine in barrel and insisted on giving it an independent bottling. ¶ Georges de Latour recognized the promise of his Rutherford estate and wanted someone who understood European standards to develop it, so in 1938 he recruited André Tchelistcheff, research enologist from France's Pasteur Institute. Tchelistcheff applied his scientific knowledge to vineyard and winery, benefiting Beaulieu Vineyard as well as the entire nascent California wine industry. His highly trained palate led him to identify the superior Rutherford fruit quality-with the distinctive character he called "Rutherford Dust"-that became the hallmark of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. ¶ In 1991, Tchelistcheff and Joel Aiken, current Vice President of Winemaking at Beaulieu Vineyard and the winemaker behind the Private Reserve, began working together. They tasted and retasted 50 vintages of the Private Reserve to understand how each vintage develops the complexity of age. Their collaboration and commitment to innovative winemaking defines the Beaulieu philosophy. ¶ From the founding in 1900, there has been dedication to the bold, classic expression of the Rutherford estate. Beaulieu pioneered the winemaking techniques with people like André Tchelistcheff, Mike Grgich and Joel Aiken, and acquired the highest quality Napa Valley vineyards.

BERNARDUS 2007 Monterey County Pinot Noir (alc. 14.1%) $25 (4715 cases): "2007 was a long, moderate growing season. This produced wines of highly focused fruit quality, moderate acidity and excellent structure. Our 2007 Monterey County Pinot Noir represents two different growing areas of the Salinas Valley, each bringing a unique contribution to the finished wine. Our 2007 Pinot exhibits a beautifully deep garnet color with intense aromas redolent with ripe black cherry and plum, and Pinot spice, accented by toasty oak nuances. On the palate, we find a full velvety texture supporting vibrant flavors of black cherry and plum with notes of cinnamon and clove. The finish is long and very well structure for appropriate aging in the cellar. Grapes are sourced one third from the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation (Rosellas, Tondré, Fairview, and Paraiso Vineyards). This area is prized for cooler growing conditions and deep, well drained soils which promote very intense red fruit flavors in Pinot Noir. The remaining two thirds come from the Arroyo Seco appellation, (Cedar Lane and Griva Vineyards) with a slightly Salinas Valley warmer climate. The soils are river bottom in origin and extremely rocky. This produces wines with a riper fruit character and more minerality, adding to the complex, well-structured mouth feel of our Pinot."
BERNARDUS 2007 Monterey County Chardonnay $24: "The focus of Bernardus is to create wines that flatter the palate and stimulate the imagination. Our Marinus Estate Bordeaux-style red wine is the centerpiece of Ben Pon's dream. It is complemented by Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc from cool coastal climate vineyards. We also offer limited bottlings of small production and vineyard designate wines, which are available exclusively through the tasting room and wine club...taste a dream.

The final wine is a rich and cohesive expression of the entire Napa Valley, reflecting the varied microclimates and soils of this unique appellation. The 2006 growing season was marked by a very mild summer with a mid-July heat spike that accelerated ripening. Mild temperatures throughout the fall allowed a moderately paced harvest. The long growing season brought complex and intense flavor and aroma development. "Our Napa Valley Merlot captures the balanced character of a young wine, while embodying the diversity of the entire Napa Valley appellation. The product of a standout Merlot vintage, the Merlot in 2006 offered an excellent expression of the varietal and required very little blending with other grapeswith only small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot used to add subtle complexity. It is these meticulously planted hillside vineyards that produce the exceptional grapes used to create the latest step in the Hahn Family winemaking journey, the new Hahn SLH wines, which reflect the passion and commitment of Nicky and Gaby Hahn. The new Hahn SLH wines epitomize the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation. said Hahn Family Wines President Bill Leigon. These estate-bottled wines are lush and rich reflections of the Monterey County winegrowing region. The first releases include Pinot Noir, Syrah, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Often asked, What makes up the soul of a wine? Or a specific vineyard site? Or a wine region? The Hahns' answer, "Its more than terroirtechnically, the soil and climate; its that plus the sum total of the perseverance, dedication, commitment and simple trial and error of people who came together at a specific place and time, with a vision to plant the vineyard and create the wine." Nicolaus (Nicky) Hahn, and his wife Gaby, discovered their love for California wines in the mid 70s. They began a search to find the perfect place to make wines of their own. It took two years for the Hahns to find the two neighboring Monterey County horse and cattle ranches that had been converted to vineyard property. The grape growing conditions were ideal, so it was there that Hahn Winery and Smith & Hook Wines were established.

Robert Craig celebrates three decades as a Napa Valley mountain man, producing distinctive Cabernet Sauvignons from vineyards in the highest, most remote reaches of the Valley. He has pioneered Napa's mountain vineyards by creating a new style for Cabernets that emphasizes ripe fruit, supple tannins, and early balance and integration. During the 1980s, Bob developed over 300 acres of vineyards on Mt. Veeder and served as general manager of the Hess Collection Winery. He spearheaded efforts to designate Mt. QUINTESSA: "Quintessa, like all classic wines of the world, bears the same name as the vineyard from which it is made. Our goal is to produce the best expression of this extraordinary vineyard each year. In broad terms, Quintessa is a red meritage wine. The vineyard's diversity provides us wide stylistic options for the wine. Fruit from each component block of Quintessa is harvested, sorted, then gravity fed into either oak or stainless steel fermentation tanks. Once fermentation and maceration are complete, each block wine is aged separately for up to two years in french oak barrels in our caves. After this ageing period the components are brought together and the final Quintessa blend is created. The wine is then bottled and laid down for yet another year before release. Although each vintage is unique, we have discovered that finesse and elegance best express the character of the vineyard and as such, we blend for harmony, balance, and length of flavors. Above all, our objective is to make Quintessa a delicious wine that is complementary to food." Agustin Huneeus, Vintner/Proprietor

VALLEY OF THE MOON 2006 Syrah, Sonoma County (alc. 13.5%) $16 (4,800 cases): "When it comes to making outstanding wine, often one element whether it is a vineyard, an appellation or a grape variety is not enough. In the right hands, a marriage of two or more places or grapes can turn good wines into one great wine. Such is the case with the newly released 2006 Valley of the Moon Sonoma County Syrah; this blend of two appellations offers appealing power, harmony and complexity unmatched by either component. In California, Syrah adapts well to a wide range of growing conditions. In 2006, this Syrah drew grapes from Sonoma County appellations with very different conditions and distinctive styles. Approximately 60% of the blend came from the upper Sonoma Valley, where gravelly, well-drained soils and warm-to-hot weather produced Syrah of intense color, firm structure and concentrated fruit character. The smaller component came from the Russian River Valley, where cool, marine-influenced weather gave the Syrah black fruit character, earthy notes, polished texture and generous natural acidity. The two lots were aged separately in small French and American oak barrels for 18 months and blended along with a tiny percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon to produce this delicious wine. This Syrah brims with forward aromas of lavender, black cherry and blackberry, accented by cedar complexity. Blackberry, black cherry and earth dominate the mouthfilling flavors. Viscous, yet impressively smooth on the palate, with integrated tannins that promise additional development with cellaring, the Syrah culminates in a long, balanced finish."

WINE GRAPE EXPERTS EXPLAIN CRUSH:"Cabernet
Sauvignon, the largest red wine variety, dropped a staggering 24% in 2008 compared to
2007, a decrease of 17 million gallons or almost 85 million bottles
As predicted by The Turrentine Outlook
and now confirmed by the Grape Crush Report, the 2008 grape crop, especially for
red grapes, was down 9% from 2007. The decline in Coastal areas was especially
pronounced. The
According to the Grape Crush Report,
Merlot fell 26%, the equivalent of 13.4 million gallons or 66 million bottles of wine
Pinot Noir, still the fastest growing red wine,
bucked the trend of other red varieties. Pinot Noir was up 17% in 2008 compared to 2007.
That reflects an increase of over 2.6 million gallons or over 13.1 million bottles of
wine. However, the
White grapes did not suffer nearly as badly as
red grapes. They were down just 2% statewide driven by a strong performance of grapes used
for generic white wines. Chardonnay in the Interior was down by 5.4%, 18,069 tons or 15.4
million bottles. Statewide Sauvignon Blanc was down 13%, which equals over 2.4 million
gallons or 12 million bottles of wine
When we have entered past recessions, the wine business has been in a state of oversupply. As we face our current economic difficulties the situation is substantially different. Growing sales and a lack of new planting has drained excess supplies and inventories are in relative balance. Though everyone is dealing with the current economy, the long-term challenge will be to prepare for the growing purchases of wine by millennial consumers and the eventual economic recovery. It is likely that the true impact of the short crop and the impending shortage likely to develop over the next 12 24 months are hidden by the concerns over the economy.- Brian Clements, Senior Partner, Turrentine Brokerage
