WINERY OF THE MONTH: SEQUOIA GROVE Sequoia
Grove, named for the giant trees that dominate its Rutherford estate, Napa Valley, was
founded in 1980 and has recently enjoyed a large dose of reinvigoration. The
reputation was established early on for crafting Bordeaux-style wines, emphasizing finesse
and balance. Still a boutique winery today, Sequoia Grove produces a limited
quantity of ultra-premium wines and specializing in Cabernet Sauvignon. Claiming the
first Napa Valley underground cellar, the pioneering spirit has continued with
cutting-edge equipment and winemaking processes under the leadership of Winemaker Mike
Trujillo: "You should expect nothing but the greatest wines from Sequoia Grove,"
he says. "We are dedicated to producing the best quality Cabernet Sauvignon
from 100% Napa Valley fruit." ¶ After
decades of ownership by three Allen family generations, Michael Trujillo, who began his
wine career in 1982 alongside owner Jim Allen, was made head of all winemaking operations
in 2001. My winemaking strives for balance and varietal character. I'm
not in favor of the big, high-alcohol wine trend that influences much of the industry
today. I want richness and balance from start to finish." ¶
Michaels influence is most keen in his grower relationships, enabling
Sequoia Grove to source Napa Valley's best fruit. All purchased grapes are AAA
quality from the finest grape growers in Napa Valley: Gary Morisoli, Andy Beckstoffer,
Garvey Family, Traina, and others. I prize my relationships with
growers, he says. Many even replanted according to our specifications--a
huge commitment. We source only A+ Napa grapes. And, we have our own superb
grapes. Each harvest, our best fruit comes from our 24-acre Estate Vineyard--the
soul of Sequoia Grove, says Trujillo. We hand pick everything-- only perfectly
ripe grapes. The Estate Vineyard is used exclusively to make our flagship Sequoia
Grove Reserve, a Bordeaux blend. We focus on this vineyard to make our mark, giving
grapes the crème-de-la-crème treatment from trellising, hangtime, to hand-harvesting and
the wine twelve additional months in bottle before release. Sequoia Grove has never
put out an inferior product, but with even superior grapes and our upgraded facility,
today we are staged to make better wines and we are doing just that, says Michael,
"as the 2002 vintage bears witness." He has altered the blending, cut away
some of the wines he felt were weaker and lowered production. The wines also benefit
from the influx of capital in the production facility; higher quality fermenters,
processing equipment, oak barrels and a new assistant winemaker, Molly Hill. Even
the wines package was redesigned, to illustrate the brands reinvigoration.
Sequoia Grove is located on 24 acres in the heart of the Rutherford Bench, a
prestigious Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon appellation. For 30 years, Sequoia Grove
has been recognized for its commitment to crafting award winning Bordeaux style wines that
emphasize finesse and balance from the regions superlative fruit sources. Today the
boutique producer and specialist in Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon remains true to
varietal character and continues to be recognized for excellent quality and value.
SPLURGE WINE of
the MONTH: SHAFER 2003 Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon $200. ShaferVineyards' hillsides offer clock-work climate consistency
each year. "Day after day of morning chill and overcast are followed by
brilliant sunlight and midday heat," Doug Shafer reports. "San Francisco
Bay cool breezes channel into our secluded box canyon for lovely evening
temperatures. This daily seesaw of chill and heat develop flavors and acidity within
our fruit as we control grapes to mature on the vine. We brought in loads of dark,
richly ripe fruit from selected vineyard blocks and then we narrowed choices even further
for the Hillside Select. This wine has a bounty of complex flavors."
BUBBLES for the Holidays: Celebrate life with champagnes and other sparkling wines.
- Milla Handley made her first HANDLEY Brut, Anderson Valley, Mendocino County in
1983, a pioneer with a continuing award-wining touch. Only 455 cases exist of the
pure, pink-tourmaline, golden quality current release, HANDLEY 2003 Brut Rosé--an unforgettable wine to warm your memories of all your
celebrations. Stock up as much as possible!
- Judy Jordan of
J Wine fame
is another praiseworthy, lovely grand dame. And just like the sparkling lady, her
Russian River Valley wines exude elegance and charm. Judy's Sonoma County vineyards
and winery adventure began in 1986 and I happily report that I've followed the lady's
career with respect and affection. Enjoy the her 20th vintage celebration J Cuvée 20 Brut and the luscious 1999 Russian River
Valley Vintage Brut..
- Schramsberg's Hugh Davies with his mom directs the winery established
(1965) by his parents, Jamie and the late Jack Davies. Schramsberg superior wines
represent Napa's first sparkling winery, and very well indeed. The family built a
wall to accomodate all the awards. Hugh continues laudably the Schramsburg tradition
with many splendid wines--all good, so choose your preference, any brings pleasure, I'm
partial to each one, especially the Brut Rosé, the Blanc de Blancs and the Blanc de Noirs.
- Korbel has a
reputation envied by any business, and among American sparkling wines Korbel has
established itself numerically nonpareil. More Americans have toasted life over the
decades and continue to do so with this quality bubbly than any other. Choose among the
Brut, Blanc de Noirs, Rosé, Natural and Chardonnay sparkling wines for every
celebration.
- Champagne Veuve Clicquot set high standards for the industry after Madame Clicquot became a
widow (veuve) in 1805 and devoted herself to producing champagne. Adding
her maiden name and family money to the enterprise, Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin has remained
a "La Grande Dame" in the industry. The house style "Yellow" Brut and the incredibly lovely Rosé will keep holidays deliciously bright!
- Champagne Moët et Chandon, established in 1743 by Claude Moët, makes
consistently respected wines. The White Star has a balanced and harmonious character
with mellow flavors and assemblage structured around the
Pinot Noir. The Rosé Imperial has a
fresh-berries sweetness, like raspberry chutney and fresh yeast bread with plenty of crisp
acidity to keep the freshness.
- Domaine Chandon, from the French house of Moët et Chandon), was first to make Napa Valley sparkling wine. French
law limits champagne grape production, which instigated property
purchases in California. Chandon's popularity continues with the Chandon Blanc de Noirs and the gracious étoile.
They offer savvy choices for wine lovers seeking quality with a sophisticated taste
and style.
- Champagne Deutz has an enviable record of elegant quality. The
firm, founded in 1838 by William Deutz and Pierre Geldermann, is directed today by
sixth-generation Deutz descendants--the Lallier family. When I last visited the
property the grand old mansion associated with the winery was being renovated and CEO
Fabrice Rosset and I dined in a smaller dining room to taste through the wines. They
remain memorable and superb: Deutz Blanc de Blancs, Brut Classic, Brut Rose and Cuvee
William Deutz.
- Champagne Louis Roederer, well-known for its greatness since its
Cristal creation, is a firm that owns a high percentage (80%) of its vineyards, which
explains the consistent quality. Reserve wines are blended to enhance the layers of
flavors and textures to its wines.
- Roederer Estate opted for California's Mendocino County to establish Champagne Louis
Roederer's American property in Anderson Valley. Milla Handley's research showed that
these soils grow great sparkling wines. Roederer's Michel Salgues creating the
initial wines and directing the excellent and exquisite wine program for 20 years. The Roederer Estate Brut is crisp and elegant with complex
pear, spice and hazelnut flavors. It is fresh and lightly fruity with great finesse and
depth of flavor.
- Mumm Napa is G. H. Mumm's American
property and celebrated 25 years of making bubbles with Napa Valley's fine fruit in 2005.
Mumm Napa 2002 Blanc de Blancs comprises 77% Chardonnay and 23% Pinot Gris, giving
the wine crisp acidity and citrus notes that delivers a refreshing crispness and rich
palate. Brut Prestige expresses Napa's unique microclimates with medium body, floral
aromas and touches of vanilla with crisp creamy qualities.
- Gloria Ferrer has
been crafted for 20 years by Bob Iantosca. His wines remain finely tuned with
crispness--the hallmark of good sparkling wine--while also providing fruit and an elegant
weight to the palate. We're tasting the crisply textured Brut at my table. Bob makes
great bubbly!
- Champagne Taittinger, one of the youngest grande marques
firms, has enjoyed one of the grandest reputations. The house-style La
Française Brut offers a superb sparkling blend from the 600 Champagne vineyard
holdings. "Prestige Rose" is a delightful traditionally-styled pink bubbly
while Prelude Grands Crus Brut comes exclusively from echelle des crus vineyards highly ranked for perfection. Taittinger
is synonymous with fine entertaining during the holidays.
- Domaine Carneros is Taittinger's well-respected American property most ably created by
Eileen Crane, an industry idol. Her elegant wines have towering approval and will
grace any table. The 217 acres in Carneros create perfect champagne grapes and Crane
styles the wines strictly according to the méthode
champenoise. She is a master of
perfection.
- Freixenet is Spain's gift to the world of
bubbly--called Cava in Spain to respect France's preservation of its historic name,
champagne. There are number of interesting non-vintage choices at very reasonable prices
that offer quality: Brut, Extra Dry and Carta Nevada Brut, which happens to be my
favorite. Freixenet also owns Segura Viudas and offers its Aria Cava for entertaining guests with reasonalby
priced bottles.

KENDALL-JACKSON Celebrates 25th Year: "From
day one we have been a family-owned and family-run business," Jess Jackson says.
"It is a distinction that is rapidly becoming a rarity in the wine industry.
We believe in hard work, integrity, an uncompromising desire for quality and the
long-term stewardship of the land. It takes a
strong-willed family to live up to these principles. Our high road approach to
quality requires us to grow world-class grapes and produce critically acclaimed
award-winning wines." ¶ Jess Jackson was born in 1930, reared in
San Francisco and graduated from UC Berkeley's Boalt Law School.
In 1974, Jess and his family bought an 80 acre pear and walnut
orchard in Lakeport, California, and converted it to a vineyard. Jess began selling
his grapes to local wineries. In 1982, he produced his first bottle of
Kendall-Jackson wine. Jess and his family still run the day-to-day business of the
winery. "At our founding, we wanted to make extraordinary wine from
California's best vineyards. In 1983 our Chardonnay won the first Platinum Award
ever presented by the American Wine Competition. For over 15 years running, we
have been America's favorite wine. We grow grapes on 12,000 acres of California
Coastal vineyards, and continue to evolve practices that increase the quality of our
wines. My family will always be committed to creating the very best wine we can.
We hope you enjoy our wine as much as we enjoy making it."

VINTNERS PRAISE HIGH QUALITY 2007 GRAPE HARVEST: Early Harvest,
Extended Season, Lighter than Normal Crop Californias 2007
wine grape harvest began early, stalled mid-way due to cool weather, and finished in late
October to vintner accolades. A mild winter
with below normal rainfall, coupled with a dry spring, led to early bud break. Although cluster counts were high in most
locations, a sparse berry set in spring resulted in loose grape bunches. Additionally, berries were small, creating a
greater skin to juice ratio, enhancing quality. The
California Department of Food and Agricultures latest wine grape crop forecast in
October was 3.2 million tons, up less than one percent from 2006.

EISCH "Breathable Glass" now on market: Wine industry
professionals approve new stemware at CIA event. Eisch
Glaskultur, German glass maker, hosted a special event at the Culinary Institute of
America for wine industry professionals from more than 50 Napa Valley wineries. They
sampled Eischs newest and most innovative product, the Breathable Glass
fine wine glass. ¶ Our Breathable Glass products have
revolutionized enjoying a glass of fine wine, said Alan Zalayet, Eisch Glaskultur
Partner. We wanted industry professionals to
experience how wine in our Breathable Glass will show signs of aeration within
two to four minutes equivalent to a decanted wine that has aerated one to two hours.
Master Sommelier and Master of Wine Ronn Wiegand said,"I was
skeptical at first of the claims that [Eisch Breathable glasses] softened wine and
enhanced their characteristics within just a few minutes, said Wiegand. But I
found that they actually do. This is a real contribution to the enjoyment of
wine. ¶ Event attendees
agreed. For information: www.eisch.de or info@eisch.de

WILD OAK: "St. Francis
heritage in Sonoma County dates back to its roots as a premium grape grower in the early
1970s. Over the last 35 years, we have carefully studied the county terroir and
developed an intimate relationship with its multiple microclimates, soil types, and
ripening patterns the elements that make Sonoma viticulture unique. The
ongoing evolution of this education and knowledge is the foundation for the next chapter
in St. Francis story: Wild Oak. With the finest fruit from our
acclaimed, fully mature vineyards, and the best AVA grower fruit, we've encapsulated
years of experience to create a living legend. We pay tribute to the longevity and
tradition of winemaking in Sonoma County. For centuries, the Heritage Oaks of Sonoma
County have dotted our vine-clad hills and river terraces as historical monuments of a
superb winegrowing region. Our Wild Oak wines represent a tapestry of Sonoma
vineyard sites that embody the heritage in these majestic trees."
Winemaker Tom Mackey also makes ST. FRANCIS RED, a proprietary blend
from Sonoma Valley that has a happy price of $13.

crisp yet full-bodied Chardonnay that offers plush fruit," says Winemaker Tom Mackey.
"The blend draws on eight diverse vineyards including our estate.
Yamakawa in Carneros lends a high-toned purity and lemon chiffon with bracing
acidity. Dry Creek, Russian River and Alexander valleys impart floral overtones,
tropical touches and pinpoint acid balance with a creamy texture and butterscotch-vanilla
from oak."

Zinfandel comes from Sonoma's most venerable California's Heritage grape variety.
Nuns Canyon bring bright, berry-inflected flavors and the old Pagani Vineyard field blend

BEAM WINE ESTATES has several new releases.
- BUENA VISTA 2005 Carneros Merlot, $25: "In 2004, early budbreak and
unusually warm spring led to a growing season unlike any in recent memory. Our
earliest harvest in memory began in late August with our merlot picking on September 20th.
Hand-sorted grapes were destemmed before cold soaking to increase color, fruit
essence and structure. The wine aged in French and American oak barrels (25%
new) for 18 months for a beautifully balanced and rich wine, a testament to our Carneros
estate fruit. Aromas and flavors of cassis, coffee, toasty oak, black cherry and
sweet vanilla in layers of cassis fruit, leather and tobacco, and opulent tannins.
Pair with roasted tomato-sauce on pasta, rack of lamb or herb roasted chicken."
- BUENA VISTA 2005 Carneros Pinot Noir, $25: "A late March bud break
in 2005 assured a more typical season than 2004--three weeks ahead of normal. Crop
levels were slightly above normal and healthy. We selectively fruit thinned to
ensure flavor intensity of flavor and balance. The harvest of 2005 will be
remembered for producing wines of great quality, varietal character and elegance.
The grapes were handpicked at night to preserve the fruit character.
The grapes were hand-sorted twice on our belt system and gently destemmed. Each lot
was cold soaked for a minimum of five days to maximize color and flavor extraction. The
must was then fermented in small open-top fermentors to broaden the texture and complexity
of the wine. After an average of 14 days on the skins, the wine was pressed gently
and aged for eight months in 33% new French oak, with the balance in one to three-year-old
barrels. The 2005 Pinot Noir Carneros has aromas of bright Bing cherry, fresh ground
nutmeg and earthy wild mushroom. The palate explores hints of toastiness and
exhibits flavors of deep blackberry and cherry with undertones of dark chocolate and clove
spice. This is a wine of depth that leads to a long finish complemented by soft
tannins and lingering berry fruit, all considered hallmarks of Carneros Pinot Noir.
- BUENA VISTA 2005 Carneros Chardonnay, $25: "Grapes were hand
harvested at night to preserve fruit character and by blocks based upon optimum ripeness
and flavor maturity. The grapes were whole cluster pressed, and the juice was
fermented in barrels and aged sur lie, with the lees stirred every two weeks for 5-6
months. 100% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation and was aged in French
oak barrels (27% new) for 7 months. The aromas and flavors combine crisp green
apple, orange blossom, pear, clove and Meyer lemon. This classic Carneros Chardonnay
shows the unique characteristics of the regions terroir. Subtle notes of
vanilla and spice add texture and round off the long, smooth finish."
- WILD HORSE 2005 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon $20: "Distinctive for
its bold, fruit-forward character, this Cabernet Sauvignon (91%) is sourced from
well-established vineyards in Paso Robles. Lots were aged separately and then
blended to create this balanced wine. Malbec (6%) enhanced the anise spice while
adding richness. Blaufrankisch (2%), an estate grape from Austria, added soft
roundness, cherry and raspberry. Syrah smoothed out the tannins to enhance the
fruit on the finish. This well-structured Cab has richness with blackberry, cocoa
and clove, a vibrant acidity and good pairing with prime rib or rack of lamb."
- WILD HORSE 2006 Paso Robles Viognier $19: "Balance, elegance and
richness were achieved through selecting specific vineyard lots and fermentation divided
between tank and neutral barrels. Tanks accentuate the apricot and nectarine
flavors while preserving acidity and barrels add richness."
- WILD HORSE 2005 Paso Robles Merlot $20: "This wine reminds everyone
why we love to drink Merlot. Aromas and flavors of boysenberry cobbler, black
cherry, delicate strawberries and vanilla coffee, red raspberry, plum, nutmeg and lavender
water. The berry flavors, approachable tannins and balanced bright acidity make this
wine a perfect pairing with a variety of cheeses and entrees: grilled meats, winter stews,
savory fare, Gouda and Piave cheeses."
- ATLAS PEAK 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $42: "Vineyards atop
the steep slopes and ridges above Napa Valley make the vines struggle in thin soils to
produce grapes with concentrated fruit and uncommon character. Atlas Peak draws upon
its estate and other prestigious Napa Valley mountain appellations--each with its own
personality--to create this delicious, muscular mountain blend with deep berry flavors,
vanilla complexity and a smooth lingering finish."
- GARY FARRELL 2005 Russian River Valley Chardonnay $33: " This 2005
Westside Farms Chardonnay exhibits delicate aromas of apple blossom, fresh apricots,
citrus, and a nuance of toasty oak perfume on the nose. The fruit character deepens in the
mouth, creating continuity between the nose and the palate. The structure holds firm with
ample acidity, yet retains richness and suppleness. Its crisp structure and fresh finish
make it a tremendous accompaniment to a wide variety of foods. Try with grilled,
herb marinated sea bass on a bed of white beans. Just 659 cases were made."
- GARY FARRELL 2006 Sauvignon Blanc $25: "Redwood Ranch is in the
extreme lower end of Alexander Valley. This cool bench land area contains primarily Yolo
sandy loam soils. The vines were planted in 1997 with 8ft. x 6ft vine spacing. Clone 1 was
planted on a devigorating root-stock, chosen to help provide optimum exposure of the fruit
to the sun. The quality of this fruit is a true expression of the commitment of the
growers, Jim and Gail Reed. Winemaking Our Sauvignon Blanc juice is fermented slowly
at very cold temperatures using a yeast strain (Zymaflore VL3) isolated for its ability to
act upon certain aroma precursors in Sauvignon Blanc, thereby enhancing varietal aroma and
flavor potential. When the fermentation approaches 70% completion, approximately 20% of
the juice is cold-transferred to new French oak barrels. The blend (wine in stainless
tanks and wine in barrels) is constantly monitored. The wine in barrels is blended back
prior to any suggestion of oak character in the blended wine. This limited exposure to new
barrels is intended to provide richness and fullness to the mid-palate, while maintaining
the clean, crisp varietal contributions of the grape. Winemaker's Notes This
2006 Sauvignon Blanc shows bright, forward aromas of ripe grapefruit, citrus zest and
gooseberry. Flavors mirror the aromas, which are enhanced with hints of white peach,
apricot, and honeydew. A heavenly mouthfeel follows, with a lingering crisp, refreshing
finish. While an ideal companion to cheese plates, shellfish, and cold vegetables, this
Sauvignon Blanc will also stand up to rich, spicy Thai and fish dishes.

KENWOOD VINEYARDS has released three Zinfandels for your holiday
celebrations. Zinfandel arrived in the United States in the 1820s, having originated
in Croatia, to become an American favorite. By the 1870s, wineries in Sonoma
county were advertising Zinfandel, making it perhaps the first California wine to be
offered by grape variety. Sonoma is now home to 5,200 acres of zinfandel grapes, and
KENWOOD began producing the wine in 1970. KENWOOD
VINEYARDS 2006 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley is also now in the market. KENWOOD
sources pinot noir grapes from Sonoma county's Russian River Valley, where cool
temperatures and a very long growing season enable grapes to develop generous character,
elegant structure and supple texture at maturity. Grapes ferment with a small but
significant percentage of whole berries to enhance fresh fruit aromas and flavors.
- KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2006 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $18: " . . .
has aromas and flavors of strawberry and raspberry, subtle rose and smoke nuances,
complexity and polish with background herb, vanilla and hazelnut, smooth and supple with
elegance on the palate."
- KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2005 Zinfandel, Sonoma County $14: "Aromas and
flavors of fresh blueberry, boysenberry, spices, cedar and vanilla notes with generous
raspberry with tannins evident in the balanced finish."
- KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2005 Reserve Zinfandel, Sonoma County $20: "Aromas
and flavors of blackberry, plum, hint of anise, intense flavors with spice component, bit
and robust with integrated tannins in the long finish."
- KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2005 Jack London Vineyard Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley $25:
"Aromas and flavors of cranberry, cocoa, white pepper and mouthfilling boysenberry
and other black fruits that give a substantial yet graceful texture."

of berries and Bing cherries dominate the flavors." Château La Baronne is the
home of the Lignères family and represents the heart of the winemaking tradition that

SHAFER VINEYARDS releases new wines with reports on solar power,
Merlot's new chapter and a renovation that offers visitors a new experience. In 2004, Shafer Vineyards became the first
winery in the region to have 100 percent solar power for the cellar and winery. Doug
says it is time to turn up the power even further. Work has begun on a new 100-kW
array to completely power the winery's irrigation and water reclamation system.
Rebates from California's program make the project viable and Shafer sees
it as an investment and a way of doing their part to reduce greenhouse gasses.
Fifty percent of toxic pollution in the U.S. is created by coal and oil-powered electrical
generation plants, so the Shafer project is thoughtful. The Shafers have also
finished renovating the winery, hospitality and landscaping areas. Doug says the
renovation gives them the opportunity to offer visitors different kinds of
tastings.
- SHAFER VINEYARDS 2003 Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
$200: ShaferVineyards' hillsides offer clock-work
climate consistency each year. "Day after day of morning chill and overcast are
followed by brilliant sunlight and midday heat," Doug Shafer reports. "San
Francisco Bay cool breezes channel into our secluded box canyon for lovely evening
temperatures. This daily seesaw of chill and heat develop flavors and acidity within
our fruit as we control grapes to mature on the vine. This wine has a bounty
of complex flavors. The physical structure of the hillsides
contributes to consistent quality. The rocky, volcanic soil measures only 18 to 22
inches deep and the immediate underlayer is weathered bedrock. The combination of
the porous soil and the slope itself ensures quick runoff, never allowing the vines to
receive excess moisture. The hillsides' crescent shape creates blocks that face
southeast, southwest and west so different parts of the vineyard experience different
levels of sun exposure. Our
team rolls with whatever Mother Nature throws our way. We brought in loads of dark, richly ripe fruit from selected vineyard blocks and
then we narrowed choices even further for the Hillside Select. Sugars and acids responded
to the weather and the vineyard team recognized the added hangtime they gave grapes
resulted in even more lush, full flavors. This wine has a bounty of complex flavors."
- SHAFER VINEYARDS 2004 Relentless, Napa Valley $65: "This vintage,
the earliest budbreak in 20 years, began two weeks early. Flavors were in the grapes
early too so the heatwave in early September could be managed with early picking.
This wine has great volume of color and flavor that resembles 1994, 1997 and 2001.
This sixth vintage of our field blend of Syrah and Petite Sirah and the wine has evolved
into a more complex style. Relentless will always be a blockbuster, but this release
shows the trend toward more layers of dark, rich aromas and flavors."
- SHAFER VINEYARDS 2005 Merlot, Napa Valley $46: "Although a big grape
crop, 2005 wines defied the idea that big crops produce good but not great wines. A
longer-than-usual and cooler-than-typical summer allowed us to leave the fruit on the vine
until it achieved true physiological ripeness. This Merlot comes with big scoops of
red and black fruit aromas and flavors--fresh plums, sweet black cherries, currants and a
little pepper with pleasing doses of fragrant earth, smoke and minerals."

JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS has released the 2007 fall wines.
Winemaker Craig Williiams shares his impressions.
- JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley $32: "The
wine is 92% Sauvignon Blanc and 8% Semillon from our Spring Valley ranch outside of St.
Helena and from independent growers. The grapes were fermented sur lies for
ten months in a combination new French oak barrels (30%) and one to two-year-old French
oak (70%). This wine has delicate aromas of grapefruit and citrus underscored by a
perfumy linalool scent. Concentrated minerality completes the fresh, balanced, crisp
flavors."
- JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS 2006 Viognier, Napa Valley $50: "The wine is
100% estate grown. It has lovely apricot and orange blossom aromatics, a rich
mouthfeel and great length. We allowed the wine to go through partial malolactic
fermentation which contributed to its excellent acid balance and highlighted the purity of
our estate-grown fruit."
- JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS 2004 Insignia, Napa Valley $200: "The
wine is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 12% Petite Verdot and 2% Malbec from estate
owned vineyards. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, Insignia aged 24 months
in new 60-gallon French oak barrels by a variety of French coopers. The wine was
blended and bottled in December 2006. This 2004 marks the first time Insignia has
been blended entirely from estate-grown fruit--the fulfillment of a dream taking
many years to realize. The low-yield vintage produced a wine with aromas of
blackberry, blueberry and spice, followed by velvety tannins, roundness in the finish and
outstanding texture, all of which are superbly integrated."

GNARLY HEAD was named "American Winery of the Year 2007" by Wine
Enthusiast. GNARLY HEAD has a premium wine focus on Zinfandel and its Old Vine
Zin has become the fastest growing Zinfandel in the country. Now Gnarly Head has
launched its Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike modern rows of trellised vines, these old
Zinfandel vines were grown as free standing, head-trained vines and resemble wild bushes
with twisted trunks and branches that spread out in all directions sprouting leaves like
unruly umbrellas--truly gnarly heads. The grapes from these old vines create rich,
concentrated fruit flavor.
GNARLY HEAD 2006 Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi
$12: "Averaging 70 years, the age of the vines for this wine are crafted from
grapes from 35 to 80 year old head-trained vines. Rich, dark berry flavors from the
small grape clusters are balanced with oak. Luscious layers of plum, pepper and
chocolate provide a lingering and spicy finish. This wine pairs well with barbecue,
pizza, hearty pastas, chili and ribs.
GNARLY HEAD 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, California $12:
" Zinfandel is not the only California grape that can be gnarly. Aromas of black
peppercorn, cedar and blackberries lead in this dark, bold 2005 GNARLY HEAD Cab. A
wave of juicy blueberries and currants breaks on the palate followed by hints of violets,
earth, cloves and cocoa. This wine pairs well with steak, lamb, fire-roasted vegetables or
hearty lasagna."

VERAMONTE has a couple of new releases. Owner Agustin Huneeus
tells me that he believes "the 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is our best yet. It's
estate grown in Casablanca Valley, a region fast becoming one of the world's privileged
sauvignon blanc appellations." I've appreciated Chile's quality Sauvignon Blanc
since I first visited the country in 1988--then one of Chile's best wines.
Vermonte has 1100 planted Casablanca acres surrounded by 12,000 acres of unplanted
greenbelt--a region chosen by Huneeus for the microclimates and soils--and utilizes
sustainable, organic farming practices along with the latest viticultural advances.
Vineyard yields are managed by dropping crop, controlling irrigation and experimenting
with different pruning and canopy management techniques to maximize maturity and ripeness
in the grapes. All of this attention to detail yields wines with intense flavor,
definition and concentration. Veramonte, introduced in 1996, has earned
international recognition for Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and
Primus (a blend of Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot). When the Huneeus
family pioneered Chile's Casablanca Valley in 1990, there were less than 100 acres planted
to vines.
- VERAMONTE 2007 Sauvignon Blanc, Casablanca Valley, Chile $10: "Fresh
stone fruit, citrus, and herbs mingle with floral accents.Flavors of zesty, medium body
with flavors citrus, melon and herb flavors that linger on the palate
- VERAMONTE 2006 Pinot Noir Reserve, Casablanca Valley, Chile $17:
"Summer berries mingle with toast and vanilla, bright silky flavors of red berries

Duckhorn Wine Company is a collection of small winery estates focused on
site-specific, distinctive wines from the Napa and Anderson valleys: DUCKHORN VINEYARDS,
PARADUX and GOLDENEYE. With grapes selected from more than ten estate vineyards, as
well as a variety of sought-after vineyard sites within the Napa and Anderson Valley
appellations, each winery is presented with a canvas of lots from which to blend its
wines. Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has been
crafting classic Bordeaux varietals from the Napa Valley for nearly 30 years. This
winemaking tradition has grown to include seven meticulously farmed estate vineyards,
located throughout the various microclimates of the Napa Valley.
- DUCKHORN VINEYARDS 2004 Napa Valley Merlot, Three Palms Vineyard $85:
"2004 had an early bud break and flowering and an early harvest. A cooling
trend then allowed additional hang time for many red varieties resulting in a steady
period of ripening. A heat wave then accelerated harvest to an early finish.
This concentrated wine has a velvety texture, bright acidity, and firm, well-integrated
tannins. The aroma is layered with red fruit, dried herbs, allspice, vanilla bean, and a
hint of dust. On the palate, the flavors are dominated by dark red fruits, including ripe
strawberries and dried cherries, with inviting accents of toasted oak, chocolate, and
spice."
- DUCKHORN VINEYARDS 2005 Napa Valley Merlot $52: "2005 had a
wet winter and spring with annual rainfall totals well above average.
Nonetheless, an ideal fruit set produced an abundant number of full grape clusters and the
vintage yielded exceptional fruit for the season. This wine is blended for
complexity and balance while embodying the diversity of the whole Napa Valley
appellation. Medium-bodied, it has a smooth entry, integrated soft tannins, and a
long finish. The aroma is lifted with raspberry, red currant, blueberry, cherry
cola, and delicate spice. The flavors are polished with blackberry, plum, black
cherry, toast, and a hint of herb.
- DUCKHORN VINEYARDS 2003 Napa Valley Merlot, Howell Mountain $70:
"2003 growing season was marked by a cool, wet spring. As summer approached,
carryover moisture resulted in vigorous vine growth. A heat spike resulted in
reduced yields. The season ended with an extended mild period so harvest concluded
at a relaxed pace. This Howell Mountain bottling has great texture and structure,
mouth-filling, yet integrated tannins, and a lingering finish. The bouquet offers
layered aromas of cassis, leather, dried fruit and molasses, with subtle hints of jasmine.
On the palate, the flavors display rich black cherry, currant, pomegranate, and plum
notes, complemented by elements of maple, vanilla, and spicy black pepper."
- DUCKHORN VINEYARDS 2004 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $60: "This
Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied wine with a very smooth entry, excellent balance
between oak and fruit, spicy tannins, and a lingering finish. The aroma is dominated by
layers of blueberry, fig, and blackberry, accented by violet, spice, and a hint of bell
pepper. The flavors are ripe with cassis, raspberry jam, blackberry, toasted oak, and a
touch of dried herbs on the finish."

DRY CREEK VINEYARDS introduces
a new proprietary blend, The Mariner. "Its
an exciting time at Dry Creek Vineyard. For 35 years, we have dedicated ourselves to
producing high quality wines that define a varietal category. In July 2003,

dark fruit characters are revealed. This is a multidimensional wine that is both
compelling and provocative. On the palate, the fruit is rich and succulent with bright
cherry, dark chocolate, and cassis flavors that intermingle with seamless, well integrated
tannins. The finish displays flavors that are harmonious and repeat the theme of balance
and finessea wine that truly begs for another sip."
- DRY CREEK VINEYARDS 2006 Fumé Blanc, Sonoma County $15: "This wine
strikes an excellent balance between bright, crisp varietal character and mineral
undertones--hallmarks of Dry Creek Vineyard Fumé Blanc. Aromas and flavors of fresh
grass, lemon, and grapefruit, citrus, lime, and crushed stone nuances. The
finish is supported by crisp, food friendly acidity that speaks to the classic character
of the delicious Sauvignon Blanc varietal."

Creek Valley $55: "The 2003 Endeavour is layered with aromas of black-berries, black

QUINTESSA: "Fine Wine is a Reflection of Place, so in 1989 Valeria
and I found the property that would become QUINTESSA, a remarkable estate in the heart of
the renowned Rutherford appellation of Napa Valley. With 280 acres, it was the last
great undeveloped property in Napa Valley and had all the characteristics of a great wine
estate: rolling hills, many different microclimates and a vast diversity of soil types.
Now with nearly fifteen years of growth, the vines have lost their youthful
exuberance and have developed into a balanced vineyard that needs little manipulation to
produce low yields and concentrated flavors." Agustin Huneeus
Vintner/Proprietor
"The Vineyard's Diversity Defines Quintessa,"
says Valeria Huneeus, Vineyard Master/Proprietor.
"The fact that the property at QUINTESSA had never been planted to
grapes before spoke to the vivacity of the soil and the absence of grape pests. But it was
amazing the diversity of the land that convinced us of Quintessa's potential to be one of
the truly great wine estates of the world. The estate includes a valley, a lake, a river,
five hills, four microclimates and numerous different soil types. Few vineyards
anywhere encompass such diversity."
QUINTESSA 2004 Rutherford, Napa Valley $125: "Due to a very
concentrated vintage, the 2004 Quintessa takes a departure into the realm of power, allthe
while maintaining the finesse and elegance that have been the signature of the wine from
the Quintessa Estate since its inception. An opaque jet black robe leads to a bold
attack, transitioning into a weighty layered mid-palette of infinite complexity. The
finish is supple and round with good length and exquisitely forged tannins." Aaron

LOCKWOOD: One of the great truisms is that world-class wines come from
great vineyard locations and uncompromised excellence in winemaking. Given this
ideal, Lockwood Vineyard was created in 1989 to produce premium and ultra-premium wines
from a single, contiguous 1,850 acre vineyard located in the southern extremities of
Monterey County. The Lockwood partners are dedicated to estate bottled wines, a
legal definition that requires 100 percent of the wine to be grown, produced and bottled
from vines exclusively tended and vinified on-site. The large estate was planted in
1981 under the direction of founding partners Paul Toeppen, Phil Johnson and Butch
Lindley, who have cumulative vineyard management experience of over 90 years. The parcel
