WINERY OF THE MONTH: KING ESTATE
KING ESTATE, southwest of Eugene, Oregon, celebrates 16 years of winemaking
during 2007. Happily, I've visited this
remarkable winery and seen the operation first hand. It could easily be a blueprint
for growing wines the best way. I've monitored and tasted KING ESTATE wines
from this stellar process since the advent. It's a joy to see quality
maintained while the wine-making team strives to learn more and continues to increase
expertise. The property produces Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and small amounts of
Chardonnay. The focus is limited and intense. ¶
Founded in 1991 by the King family, the committment is to produce Oregon
wines of exceptional quality by using sustainable farming methods, meticulous fruit
selection, impeccable winemaking practices and judicious blending. The
1,000-acre estate is certified organic - including 490 acres of vineyards, orchards,
and vegetable and flower gardens. ¶
At the top of a knoll that rises above the surrounding land is an impressive,
European-style winery. The winemaking process is also certified organic. ¶ Marketing Director Steve Thomson writes me, "
You have been watching our wine program for a long time, Sarah
Jane, and I am always particularly interested in your idea of the bigger-picture view of
where we are heading and how we are perceived in the trade." I'm pleased to let
Steve know that the bigger-picture view is keen and that King Estate is perceived as very
fine indeed. My students, who are not the least timid about expressing their
opinions, are delighted when we taste these wines and express their whole-hearted
approval. The time and attention devoted to KING ESTATE wines is rewarding for
all. ¶ The
winery building reflects the architectural tradition of a French chateau and encompasses
approximately 110,000 square feet, owned and fully funded by the King family. They
are committed to creating world-class wines that reflect the vineyards in which they grow.
The signature wines are based on a core of organically grown estate fruit
with additional fruit sourced from sustainably grown vineyards throughout the Willamette
Valley. The King Estate Domaine Series wines are made exclusively from
estate-vineyard organically grown grapes. "Each vintage reflects the unique
terroir of this special piece of earth we call the King Estate 'Domaine' vineyard,"
Steve says. The Visitor Center is home to The Restaurant and Wine Bar.
"We feature complimentary wine tasting and winery tours as well as a full lunch and
dinner menu with dishes that incorporate our estate and locally grown organic ingredients
that fully complement our wines," Steve says. "If you are interested in
making a reservation please contact The Restaurant at 1-800-884-4441. www.kingestate.com

outstanding texture, all of which are superbly integrated." The Wine

KENDALL-JACKSON 2007 HARVEST
UPDATE Late September: In meteorology lingo, "cut-off low, weathermans woe" is a low
pressure weather system that breaks off from the main jet stream airflow. K-J Vice
President George Rose tells me that it's "most common here in California during the
winter months. The Earths jet streams encircle the globe with tremendous force
and are the main conveyor belt of our daily weather. When a large air flow gets
cut-off from the jet stream, long-range forecasting becomes difficult. Computer
models predicting hourly, daily or weekly weather are unreliable," George explains.
"When a "cut-off low" occurs in the Pacific Ocean offshore of
California, the low-pressure air acts like a water pump, pushing clouds and moisture into
untypical areas. That's what happened mid-September where California was busy with
an early 2007 grape harvest, setting record amounts of rainfall throughout California.
Southern California had the most severe flooding. For much of the North and
Central Coast, however, the two-day weather event merely stalled what had been a fast
start to an early harvest. In Napa and Sonoma counties, the brief rain knocked much
of the vineyard dust off the leaves. For Kendall-Jackson winemakers, the respite
meant time to clear the stainless steel fermentation tanks and make room for the remaining
grapes still on the vine." Winemaker Randy Ullom says, "Overall grape
quality is very good, though tonnage is down on some varieties. The late September
warmth definitely moved the grape sugars to their optimum levels more quickly, especially
on our Napa and Sonoma mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Our Santa
Barbara County vineyards are in full harvest mode, with Monterey County just getting up to
speed. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir flavors on the Central Coast are some of the finest
weve seen in years."

PASO ROBLES Report on Harvest: Winemakers and Growers Optimistic about
2007 Vintage. "The wine grape harvest is 25% complete (Sept. 25) across
Paso Robles County. Picking began August 21-- two weeks earlier than average.
A heat spike lasted through Labor Day to jumpstart harvest. Recent weather
extends hang time to ensure full flavor development. Paso Robles winemakers and
growers predict lighter yields and high quality for 2007 vintage. Among the attributes that make the Paso Robles AVA a
world-class wine region is the long, consistent growing season. The regions
various microclimates make it conducive to grow more than 40 different varietals within
26,000 bearing vineyard acres. Harvest is expected to extend through the end of
October and into early November."

MOUNT VEEDER Napa Valley Harvest Report: "This vintage is
another lucky seven", says Hess Collection Winemaker, Dave Guffy, "after 1987,
1997, we now have this perfect growing year. We had about half the usual winter
rain, which created smaller vines. At Hess, we believe in smaller vines--even in
high rainfall years, so we shape vines to be smaller through reducing irrigation and
pruning--smaller crop means higher quality. Shoot growth stopped at near-perfect
length, enough to ripen the grapes but not requiring hedging that produces lateral
growth." Guffy added, "The 2007 weather has also been near perfect: a
warm spring to create even and quick cluster flowering, and a very even summer without any
heat waves. Harvest occurs a bit later on Mount Veeder than down on the Valley
Floor. We will be picking our 210 different blocks of mountain vineyard estate fruit
that spans 300 acres well into November. Of course, Mother Nature is in charge, but
so far, we couldn't be happier," Guffy concluded.

largest winery by volume, also announced new data that offers retailers hard facts to
assist their corporate mandates to reduce carbon emissions and packaging waste.

pineapple and spice.

SIMI is a tradition-based winery that enhances procedures with cutting-edge innovation. "Our
philosophy has always maintained the quality and style that identifies SIMI around the
globe. At the same time, we continue to learn and to improve our methods for
growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge accumulated
throughout SIMI's 125-year history," Winemaker Steve Reeder says. "Long
ago we realized Alexander Valley would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux
varietals. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley vineyard and planted
hand-selected, original cuttings from California's best and oldest vineyards. This
technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River
Reserve Chardonnay famous. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to
tradition, enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods,
and the best winemaking techniques.
- SIMI 2006 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc $15: "Simi Sauvignon Blanc is everything a
wine made from this grape should befilled with lively acidity and crisp, clean fruit
flavors. A small amount of Sémillon is blended in to help develop richness on the
palate. The grapes represent the best of Sonoma County. The final blend is a
reflection of grapes from prestigious vineyards with climates vastly different from one
another throughout Sonoma County. Warmer climates produce fig and melon flavors and a
silky texture. Cooler climates contribute grass, lemon and mineral characteristics and a
bright, zingy acid component. Bright, light straw with a slight green cast. Aromas and
flavors of fig, grapefruit and honeydew melon notes with light hints of mineral. Zesty
lemon and lime with touches of melon and a clean, light mineral finish."
- SIMI 2006 Sonoma County Chardonnay $18: "Composed of top quality fruit
from Sonomas Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Carneros growing regions,
Simi Chardonnay is characterized by excellent balance, luscious fruit flavors and a long,
elegant finish. The 2006 vintage produced fully ripe and flavorful fruit with superb
concentration and balance thanks to an extended growing season. Lively on the palate with
peach, pear, lemon and pineapple, accented with warm spice notes from barrel fermentation
and caramel cream. Brilliantly
clear, light yellow straw with aromas and flavors of pear, green apple and orange zest,
accented by soft hints of cream and toast. Lively on the palate with peach, pear, lemon
and pineapple flavors, highlighted with warm spice notes and caramel cream."
- SIMI 2004 Sonoma County Merlot $20: "Simi Winery Merlot expresses the perfect
combination of our vine-specific vineyard care and the meticulous attention paid to the
details in the vineyard. The lavish attention each vine receives allows Simis
winemaking staff to practice winemaking with very minimal manipulation, resulting in wines
that are true expressions of the diversity of Sonoma County. Sonoma Countys cool
mornings and warm afternoons combined with unique characteristics of soil, slope and
sunshine make Simi Winery Merlot elegant and balanced with pleasing hints of clove, cocoa
and violets. Bright red cherry
and blackberry fruits layered with vanilla, cedar and cocoa and cherry and cranberry
fruits with medium body and a round, balanced tannin structure."

FAMILLE LIGNÈRES 2003 "Le Signal" Rouge, Montagne d'Alaric,
Corbières, France $18: This wine combines Carignan (68%), Grenache (13%),
Mourvedre (12%) and Syrah (7%). Monsieur Jean
Lignères tells me that the calcareous gravel terraces with the rows of vines for this
wine are plowed by hand. Although new to the U.S. market, the Domaine Famille
Lignères wines are now selling in almost every state, so the reception has been
positive. This latest release is a new one but filled with family history.
"in the 1920s, our grandfather, Louis Lignères, delivered the domaine's wines to the
town of Lourdes (in Pyrenees) in his Berliet barrel-carrier. The vehicle traveled at
an average speed of 6.8 miles per hour, so the journey took about 22 hours. Upon
arriving, Louis announced himself with the "Signal," the truck's characteristic
horn. This historic truck has been carefully preserved by the family and remains at
the Chateau to this day. The label of our new wine is a playful replica and the wine
celebrates the history."
- FAMILLE LIGNÈRES 2003 "Le Signal" Rouge vines produce two tons
per acre. Consequently, the wine has a depth and concentration that is truly unusual
at this price-point--$18. It spent 14 months in 50% new oak.

MADROÑA Vineyards is powered by solar energy and the waste water is
recycled and grape stems are used for erosion control in the vineyards. "It has
always been the philosophy of Madroña Vineyards to limit the impact of our farming on the
environment."
- MADROÑA Vineyards 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon, El Dorado $20: "Our
Cabernet Sauvignon shows what a high-mountain vineyard can produce--very small berries,
deep color, intense fruit, and full-bodied texture. Traditionally blended with
Cabernet Franc for aromatic complexity and Merlot for tannin structure, we age this wine
in the finest French and American oak. Our customers constantly search out older vintages
of our Cabernet Sauvignon as it is known to age quite gracefully. This vintage
is destined for great food pairings. Aromas and flavors of green olives, oregano and
anise and cranberry, plum and cherry cola with a hint of toasty oak and sweet vanilla.
Refined and elegant, it has balance from start to finish, cherry, dark
chocolate and raspberry fruit, notes of black currant, with a seamlessly lingering cherry
finish. Drink with almost anythingtomato soup, Rib-eye steaks, blue cheese,
grilled ham and cheese, and a good cut of beef.
- MADROÑA Vineyards 2005 Zinfandel, El Dorado $16: "With both
the fruit and spice expected, the aromas and flavors are black plum, raspberries,
cherries, black and white pepper, hint of clove and cinnamon, loganberry, cranberry, fig,
black berry and red currant. The wine is rich and medium to full-bodied
texture, balanced with a marriage of fruit and spice into a complex wine."
- MADROÑA Vineyards 2004 Merlot, El Dorado $15: "this vintage is big,
bold, balanced and shows the integrity of the variety. Aromas and flavors are deep
and complex plum, cherry, cassis, raspberry, hint molasses and tobacco with a rich and
luscious palate of Bing cherries, boysenberry, dense and concentrated with a dash of
oak."
- MADROÑA Vineyards 2004 Reserve Quintet, El Dorado $28: "A
classic blend of five Bordeaux varieties (cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc,
malbec, petit verdot), we selected individual barrels of only exceptional lots to create
this full-bodied, rich wine--rich in flavor and aroma with complexity and depth.
A rich and bold nature, mountain blueberries, black cherry, vanilla and
complex hazelnut with molasses spice, a full-body texture, soft tannins, luscious dark
cherry, dense plum and sweet oak and no sharp edges with consistent character
throughout."
- MADROÑA Vineyards 2004 Reserve Malbec, El Dorado $27: "Aromas
are bold with dark cherry and ripe blackberry and floral spice and sweet oak, a silky wine
overflowing with blackberry, blueberry, molasses and a rich, luscious, full-bodied wine
that finishes with sweet cherry fruit."
- MADROÑA Vineyards 2006 Gewürztraminer, El Dorado $12:
"Playful yet complex, the 2006 is one of the nicest Gewurz in years. Classic
aromas and flavors pink grapefruit, lychee, mandarin orange, spices, mint, juniper, and
lime with some candied ginger, a viscous and unctuous texture with complex citrus
character, tart lemon an key lime pie. A dry wine with a lush finish."

LAKE SONOMA Winery: "For the just-released
2004 Lake Sonoma Winery Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, $24 both place and vintage
were significant in creating a Cabernet of power and symmetry. Alexander Valley is
blessed with moderately fertile soils and very warm days and cool nights, which
typically gives cassis and plum fruit, and supple texture. The outstanding but
untypical 2004 vintage in Alexander Valley had a cool spring, early bud break but an
unusually long growing season punctuated by a September heat wave. As a result,
Cabernet Sauvignon yields were reduced; consequently, grapes displayed their distinctive
fruit, but with uncommon intensity and structure. Aromas and flavors of cassis,
tobacco, mint and brown sugar and mouthfilling blackberry, plum and a hint of black
pepper. Densely structured and moderate tannins balanced by moderate acidity result in a
full, lingering finish."

Arroyo Seco, Monterey $30 (375 bottle): Marketing Director Burke Owens says, "By
happy chance, the Beeswax Vineyard at the mouth of the Arroyo Seco in Salinas Valley,
gifted us with an unprecedented proportion of exceptionally clean, botrytised roussanne
fruit n 2006. Optimal weather existed in September and October and after two picking
passes and very careful selection, we harvested heavily botrytised fruit. The wine
is out of this world!--incredibly rich, unctuous, honeyed, savory mouthfeel and great
persistence on the palate with pome fruits like pear, quince. There's also nectarine,
apricot and blood orange and a beeswax fragrance."

represented by three generations of the Indelicato family. "We've directed
vineyard operations and winemaking at our California properties by maintaining the
unparalleled standards our reputation has earned. We're dedicated to environmentally
sensitive and economically sustainable business practices," says Chris Indelicato,
third-generation family member. "We believe that DFV Wines answer the consumer
demand for enjoyable, mindfully grown, intelligently vinified wines suitable for every
occasion. Our premium wines are selectively grown in California's most notable
wine-growing regions. Grapes come from Napa, Lodi, Monterey and Sonoma to craft
wines that express the diversity of these appellations." The Indelicato family
believes that wine quality starts in the vineyard. "DFV Wines will always
strive to farm with the health of the environment in mind while providing quality wines
for our customers."
- IRONY 2005 Napa Chardonnay $15: "Napa
Valley wines--a tribute to life's strange twists that sustain and grow this family-owned
business," say Chris and Jay Indelicato. " Most of us didn't imagine where we
would be right now. Sure, we dreamed of being firemen, astronauts, rock stars and
superheroes, but life often takes you where you didn't expect it to. My brother and
I worked every harvest from the time we could ride our bikes. After college, our
careers took us beyond the land our grandfather planted in 1924. Ironically, today
we are more fulfilled, working side-by-side at the family vineyard and winery. We
didn't plan it or expect it, but we are enjoying this strange twist in our lives.
That's Irony - a bottle full of life's strange twists and a celebration of our family's
life-long commitment to producing the finest quality wines," Chris and Jay say.
" This wine layers juicy tropical fruit and mineral notes with lively citrus, crisp
green apples, rich cream and vanilla -- a veritable apple pie of flavors. Enjoy
this wine with salad, oysters, mild cheeses, grilled fish, roasted chicken, creamy pastas
or on its own!"
- IRONY 2005 Monterey Pinot Noir $18: "This
Monterey Pinot Noir offers a balance of heady fruit notes and savory characteristics.
Layers of sweet cherry, fresh raspberries, cola and earthy mushrooms make up the profile
in this medium-bodied wine, with a lingering finish. Enjoy this wine with lamb,
grilled seafood, salads, roast duck or chicken, pasta and cheese."
- IRONY 2003 Napa Cabernet
Sauvignon $20: "This Napa Cab offers layers of
flavor, reflecting its varied terroir. Aromatic violets, tobacco, cocoa and bright
red berry character leads into rich, concentrated fruit flavors of raspberries, currants
and succulent black cherries. The ripe fruit flavor is juxtaposed with natural acidity for
a balanced, well-structured wine with medium tannins and a supple finish. Enjoy this wine
with grilled and roasted meats, strong cheeses or pasta with a hearty red sauce."
- IRONY 2005
Russian River Pinot Noir $18: "This Russian River Valley Pinot
Noir introduces subtle aromas of cherry and raspberry, followed by layers of cedar and
other earthy, forestry elements. This medium-bodied wine finishes slowly with lingering
notes of black cherry, roses and a unique mineral character. Enjoy this wine with
beef tenderloin, grilled chicken, a zesty antipasto platter of meats and cheeses or a
simple salad."
- IRONY 2004 Napa
Valley Merlot $18: "This Napa Merlot displays rich, ripe
raspberries, black cherries and blueberries with notes of cedar and dark chocolate. A
backbone of moderate tannins provides the structure for this full-bodied wine, which
features a lush, lingering finish. Enjoy this wine with roast beef, grilled chicken, baked
ham, a classic cheeseburger or rich minestrone soup."
- TWISTED LOT 2005 Merlot, California $10: "Twisted
is about having fun and enjoying the wines that you are drinking without worrying about
the rules generally associated with wine. Do you like to have Chardonnay with your
garlic chicken pizza? Go ahead! All of our wines are made to be enjoyed with a variety of
foods, or by themselves. So sit back, relax, and drink some Twisted Lot! Have you
ever had a blueberry drenched in cherry juice, then crushed by a big blackberry and
powdered with chocolate? If not, taste Twisted Merlot! Delicious with chicken,
chocolate fondue, and of course, all by itself! YES! We suggest chicken!
Just add a little garlic and a few bits of pancetta and enjoy!"
- TWISTED LOT 2006
Pinot Grigio, California $9: "Have
you ever had a sweet Meyer lemon wrapped in sunshine, dusted with cinnamon and kissed with
a hint of sugar? Try Twisted PiG. Enjoy Twisted PiG with salty snacks, chips
and dip, party platters, and dare we say
ham sandwiches."
- JOE BLOW 2005
White, California $12: "The wine is serious! The name is not.
Enjoy Joe Blow anywhere, anytime, with anyone. This wine is an awesome blend based
on four varietals: Chardonnay, Viognier, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc."
- JOE BLOW 2005
Red, California $12: "The wine is serious! The name is not. Enjoy
Joe Blow anywhere, anytime, with anyone. This wine is an awesome blend based on five
varietals: Syrah, Merlot, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon."
- CLAY STATION
2005 Lodi Old Vine Zinfandel $15: "During the mid-1990s, after
75 years of growing grapes in Northern California, the Indelicato family sought the
perfect place to try something new close to home, and unfailingly visited every piece of
land for sale. When they stepped onto Borden Ranch and walked what was to become Clay
Station Vineyard they knew their search was over. In the Lodi foothills of
the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Clay Station Vineyard is named after a historic stagecoach
stop used during California's Gold Rush. Today, a significant portion of this
remarkable vineyard is dedicated to classic, Old World grape varietals, including those
that make Clay Station wines. Bold and fruit-driven, with ultra-ripe blueberry,
blackberry and cherry flavors. Hints of chocolate, vanilla and toasty oak balance
the fruit. Pairs well with spicy foods such as Jambalaya, blackened rib-eye, or a
burrito."
- CLAY STATION 2006 Lodi Viognier $17:
"Floral aromas of stone fruit and orange blossoms
accompany flavors of ripe peach and guava on the palate. Matches well with calamari
antipasto, pasta dishes with cream-based sauces, fresh seafood and spicy chicken curries.
Try our Clay Station Viognier as a refreshing alternative to Chardonnay."
- 337 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi $15: "Three
distinct blocks yield a balanced ratio of fruit-to-vine. The
winemaker visits the vineyards almost daily during growing season, evaluating flavors and
the evolution of the tannins. When the tannins achieve optimal ripeness, the grapes are
picked at night and delivered to the winery cold. The 337 Cab exhibits
inviting aromas of spice and blackberry, with a raspberry top note. Smooth and velvety
tannins wrap themselves around a core of fruit intertwined with chocolate. Big and bold,
but luscious, this Cabernet Sauvignon drinks equally well on its own or with generous cuts
of meat or charbroiled salmon." The 2005 season started with a wet winter and
heavy rains continuing into spring. A long heat spike arrived midsummer followed by
a general cooling which proved ideal for grape maturation, yielding
fantastic color, supple tannins, and intense fruit character. The French Clone 337 is
grown in very rocky soil at the Clay Station Vineyard in Lodi, California, under ideal
growing conditions for Cabernet Sauvignon. The days are warm and nights are cooled
by breezes from the 50-degree San Francisco bay. Soils are comprised of red clay dispersed
with alluvial stones, which allow good drainage, deep root development and the opportunity
to produce balanced canopies.

VALLEY OF THE
MOON 2004 Cuvée de la Luna, Sonoma County $30: "Cuvée de la Luna is the single most challenging and exciting wine Valley
of the Moon Winery produces. Challenging because each vintage and each varietal
responds to nature's conditions differently, so blending the most complex wine begins
fresh annually. Exciting because the blend demonstrates how a broad mix of
viticultural vineyards and grapes can produce a remarkable meritage-style wine.
Sonoma County's outstanding 2004 vintage yielded a small crop of cabernet sauvignon grapes
with concentrated character and firm tannins. To gain lush fruit on the
palate, a significant percentage of Merlot particularly graceful this vintage
and Cabernet Franc to enhance the bouquet were included in the
blend. A tiny percentage of Malbec added depth and spice. Twenty-four months
of aging in French and American oak barrels contributed smoothness and subtle oak
complexity. The wine displays aromas and flavors of black cherry and cassis, hints
of anise, bay leaf, cedar and vanilla nuances. Wonderfully polished on the palate,
with integrated tannins, this wine has a smooth, long, balanced finish.
- VALLEY OF THE MOON 2005 Sangiovese, Sonoma County $16: For over 20 years, Sangiovese has challenged California winemakers.
"With Valley of the Moon's 10th anniversary of Sangiovese, the wine
shows that Sonoma County has had success in growing this grape. Vineyard managers
have learned that the appellations of Alexander Valley, Sonoma Valley, Chalk Hill and
Russian River Valley within Sonoma grow sangiovese that achieves full flavors and balanced
acidity. In Italy, Sangioveses home, the grape is blended with other
varieties and Valley of the Moon follows that tradition, using Merlot and Syrah for softer
tannins and expanded fruit. Lastly, Sangiovese picks up oak nuances more quickly
than other reds, so Valley of the Moon spends 16 months in French barrels (less potent
than American oak) for silky texture and subtle spice. With aromas and flavors
of cherry, violet, plum, cranberry, and sage and spice nuances, the medium-bodied
wine gains elegance in the glass and has integrated tannins and ample acidity for a full,
yet balanced finish.

SIDURI WINERY is named for the Babylonian goddess of wine, who
appears on the label. SIDURI produces the most extensive offering of single vineyard
Pinot Noirs by any California winery. Founded in 1994 by husband and wife winemakers
Adam and Dianna Lee, SIDURI produces 7500 cases of single vineyard and appellation Pinot
Noir annually at prices ranging from $20-$50. The Lees also produce a line of wines
in partnership with Dianna's family, NOVY wines; the similarly priced Novy Family Wines
explore many of the same vineyard sites as SIDURI, but with a focus on Syrah. SIDURI
and NOVY Family Wines are available from the winery and at fine restaurants and wine shops
nationally. SIDURI Winery is open to the public daily for tasting and touring from
10am to 4pm by appointment. SIDURI Wines 980-C Airway Court, Santa Rosa, CA ph:

- SIDURI 2006 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir $19: "By focusing solely on Pinot Noir from the best California and Oregon
vineyards, and vinifying each barrel separately by lot, clone, yeast and cooper, we
champion individuality of place and intensity of flavor in each wine," says Adam Lee.
"This Pinot Noir is one of our most challenging tasks each year. Not only do we
use fruit from several disparate vineyards (Hawks View, Muirfield, Arbre Vert &
Shaw Mountain) and combine them into one complete wine, but we do this while maintaining a
reasonable price point. It isnt easy, but sometimes it all just comes
together--hence with this wine. It blends multiple clones from different vineyards
with a minimum of new oak. We've done everything to preserve the natural
fruit character and overall balance of this wine. With multiple berries,
cherry, and tasty spice flavors on a background of finely tuned acidity and integrated
tannins, this is a super bargain in new world Pinot Noir." -
Adam & Dianna Lee
- SIDURI 2006 Pisoni Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Lucia Highlands
$54: "A signature wine since we began working with the fruit (1997),
some of our finest wines have come from this famed Santa Lucia location. However,
we recently felt our Pisoni winemaking needed reinvigoration. In 2006 we
accomplished it. We picked two different passes a week apart, utilized whole
clusters in some ferments to increase complexity, bled off juice for
concentration, and used more native yeasts than previously. Finally, we stringently
selected barrels with only 30% making the cut to produce a wine with superb weight
and depth, increased complexity and layers of flavor. Though not
restrained (constrained better describes Pisoni) this wine is tight. The first taste
is fruit and richness: it typifies Pisoni--and then the whole clusters' influence the
wine. A range of flavors come from the native yeasts and the finish combines ripe
tannins and good natural acidity. Pisoni Vineyard's proclivity to improve wines with
time will amply reward those who age it wine for five or more years." Adam & Dianna Lee (433 cases prodcued)
- SIDURI 2006 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir $29:
"We took a different approach for the final blend for this 2006 Russian
River Pinot Noir. This year we tasted each section from each vineyard blind and came
up with different possible blends. This procedure takes time and calls for a more strict
selection, but we ultimately felt that it produced a better wine.
The final blend was 46% Keefer Ranch, 30% Ewald Vineyard, and 24% Parsons
Vineyard Pinot Noir. This wine also blends numerous clones including Pommard, 2A,
114, 115, 777, and clone 23. Our hope was to produce a wine representative of the
Russian River Valley that also demonstrated a level of complexity. What we achieved
is a Pinot Noir with remarkable richness, more black than red fruits, ample concentration,
and sufficient backbone to complement a variety of foods. This is our most immediate
appellation Pinot Noir and the one that is likely to drink best right off the bat."
- Adam & Dianna Lee (789 cases produced)
- NOVY 2005 Sonoma County Syrah $19: "We're
a small family winery owned by Adam & Dianna (Novy) Lee of Siduri Wines and
Diannas parents, Adolph & Rose Marie Novy, and brothers and sisters-in-law,
David & Angela, Bryan & Kathy, and Steven & Marie Novy. Our family roots
are Czechoslovakian, where Novy means new. We ofer these wines in the
spirit of family, heritage and the best new wines from new vineyards. This popular
Novy wines has garnered some outstanding press over the
past few years, especially at this reasonable price.
The latest release measures up because the raw material continues to be fantastic.
This wine blends Syrah from two warmer climate Dry Creek Valley vineyards and cooler
climate Russian River Valley vineyards and Bennett Valley. It
showcases some of the richness of fruit found in the Dry Creek Valley but that is also
balanced by the crisp acidity and more complex, earthy flavors found in our cooler climate
locations. This is a rich, bold wine with roasted plum and boysenberry flavors. The
mid-palate is lush but tightens on the finish (good levels of acidity) and this only
promises positive future development."
- NOVY 2005 Page-Nord Vineyard Syrah $33: "Our
only Napa Valley fruit source, Page-Nord Vineyard, produces an explosive syrah year after
year. It is the warmest site for our syrah (Oak Knoll district-- valley floor, just
north of Napa.) We can always rely on a wine with incredible amount of fruit and a lush
mouthfeel. The 2004 version is a densely flavored wine; packed with candied plums,
blackberries, anise and a slight toastiness from 14 months in French oak. This wine, which
was bottled unfined an unfiltered, is drinking well now, but will improve and become more
interesting over the course of the next five to seven years."
- NOVY 2005 Rosella's Vineyard Syrah $33: "The Rosellas Vineyard usually produces our most distinctive Syrah.
The fruit really speaks of this unique, cool climate location down in the Santa Lucia
Highlands. This is especially true in the cooler vintages, such as 2005, where the fruit
hangs on the vine for an extended period of time and achieves true physiological maturity
and good levels of natural acidity. With the 2005 Novy Rosellas Vineyard Syrah we
utilized a portion of whole clusters in the blend and ferment the wine on its native
yeasts. This wine also was left in its original barrels until just before bottling
when only 13 barrels were selected for the final wine. Robert Parker described the
Rosellas Syrah this way, the restrained, tight-knit 2005 Syrah Rosellas
Vineyard possesses outstanding ripeness as well as potential. There is plenty of blueberry
and blackberry fruit in addition to hints of licorice and spice. This cuvee should drink
well for five to seven years. We were pleased to receive 90 points from
Connoisseurs Guide to California Wine." 358 cases

KENWOOD 2006 Reserves Show New Art: "Kenwood
Reserve wines have always displayed more opulence in its Sonoma County bottlings--more
depth and complexity. And the 2006 Kenwood Reserve Chardonnay and Reserve Sauvignon
Blanc capture the Reserve style perfectly. A look at the winemaking shows their opulence to be a
testament to the winemakers art," says P. R. Director Margie Healy.
"That art begins in the vineyard and this Chardonnay comes exclusively from Russian
River Valley--one of Californias coldest vineyard regions, where cool days and cold,
often foggy nights allow slow ripening for rich, fully developed chardonnay grapes.
Kenwood Reserve sauvignon blanc grapes come primarily from Dry Creek Valley. Dry
Creek Valleys poor soils, plentiful sunshine, warm but not quite hot
days and cold nights enable Sauvignon Blanc to express better than any California
vineyard locationits distinctive crisp character. Reserve
winemaking is different too. Our Chardonnay ferments entirely in small French
oak barrels for integrated complexity and richness and elegance. The Sauvignon Blanc ferments in
temperature-controlled stainless steel with short aging in neutral French oak casks to
soften the wines assertive personality. The art includes new labels, a handsome drawing of
the winery. Each Reserve label is individually numbered to reflect the limited production
of these wines.
KENWOOD Vineyards produces three Merlots. Like many
things, wine is subjective and a good wine is one that pleases the person drinking it.
Hence, KENWOOD offers three Merlots to suit varying individual tastes.
Consequently, the newly released KENWOOD 2005 Sonoma County Merlot, the KENWOOD 2004
Reserve Merlot and the KENWOOD 2005 Jack London give stylistic choices for consumers to
choose among. KENWOOD Jack London Vineyard Merlot expresses the unique
power and structure of this magnificent vineyard, situated high in the hills overlooking Sonoma
Valley. Aged in small French and American oak barrels, the Jack London Merlot is
bottled unblended to allow its one-of-a-kind personality to shine. Rare among
California Merlots, Kenwood Jack London Vineyard Merlot can evolve beautifully in the
cellar for years. It is Merlot for the intrepid and the patient.
- KENWOOD 2004 Reserve Merlot, Sonoma County $25: ". . . is bigger and
more complex wine that serious wine lovers appreciate. Kenwood selects a small
number of Sonoma County vineyard lots that show uncommon fruit intensity.
Concentrated expansive currant, raspberry, mint and expresso with subtle layers of cedar,
mint and vanilla with soft tannins, excellent balance and complexity with grace."
- KENWOOD 2004 Jack London Merlot, Sonoma Valley $25: ". . . slowly
unfolds in the glass to reveal a beguiling nose of raspberry and blackberry, accented by
smoke, bay leaf and cedar notes. Mouthfilling flavors of reduced raspberry, blackberry and
plum are complemented by cedar nuances. The deep fruit and impressive structure hide
integrated tannins that stay velvety through the long finish. This superb Merlot is
approachable now but will continue to evolve for several years.
- KENWOOD 2005 Sonoma County Merlot $17: "Generous aromas and flavors
of cherry and boysenberry, mingled with a hint of pipe tobacco, fresh and forward
blueberry and cherry with spicy notes."
- KENWOOD 2006 Reserve Chardonnay
Russian River Valley $25: " displays generous aromas of baked apple and citrus,
accented by a hint of toasted almond. Red apple and citrus highlight the rich, full
flavors, with a dash of butter in the background. Impressive fruit in the mouth is
balanced by lush, creamy texture that stays smooth through the long, crisp finish.
- KENWOOD 2006 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, predominantly Dry Creek Valley $20: " Luscious aromas of fresh kiwi,
tropical fruit, lemongrass and herb flow from the 2006 Kenwood Reserve Sauvignon Blanc.
Vibrant lemon, tropical fruit and herb flavors are complemented by subtle mineral nuances.
Beautifully balanced fruit and acidity combine with polished mouthfeel to give this
Sauvignon Blanc a succulent finish that lingers.

WILLOWBROOK CELLARS history: Willowbrook started in 2001 as the dream of
winemaker Joe Otos, then 26 years old. His dream became reality when he joined
retired technology executives John Tracy and Ed Sillari. New wine-country residents
Sillari and Tracy separately explored opportunities to pursue their passion for
wine. Sillari became involved in wine sales and Tracy acquired a hilltop vineyard.
The three combined their experiences to create Willowbrook Cellars.
¶ For the first two years, production was about 500 cases,
equally split between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with all of the fruit from Tracys
vineyard. In 2003 Willowbrook began increasing its production of vineyard designated
wines, seeking out interesting small vineyards, each with its own microclimate and flavor
profile. ¶ In recent years, while the principal focus has been on
Russian River Valley (RRV) Pinot Noir, Willowbrook has begun to explore interesting
vineyards from adjacent wine growing regions. ¶ 2005 was a true
Pinot year in Sonoma County, notes Joe Otos, partner and winemaker.
Temperatures were down, yields were down, but accolades for this vintages rock-star
Pinot Noirs are up, up, up. Willowbrook Cellars made three 2005: the Morelli
Lane Pinot Noir and their Estate-Grown Pinot from the Russian River Valley, and a new
Sonoma Coast bottling from one of the few vineyards tucked in between San Francisco Bay
and the Pacific. In competitions, Willowbrook's 2004 Pinot Noirs hauled in Gold and
Best of Class awards. The buzz about the 2005s has been excellent and at the Sonoma
County harvest Fair, all three Pinot Noirs won gold medals. The Harvest Fair had
1000 Sonoma County wines competing with each other and these wines are among the best from
Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast."
- WILLOWBROOK CELLARS 2005 Morelli Lane Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
$42: "The Morelli Lane Vineyard sits
high on the bluffs above the town of Occidental. At 900 feet above sea level, it's
high enough to limit the amount of fog during the day, but close enough to the coast to
receive a constant cool breeze, keeping the temperatures down and extending the growing
season. It receives ample sun, with mild temperatures that extend the time the fruit
will hang on the vine and continue to develop more intense flavors. The vineyard is
planted with the Pomard clone, well known to produce wines of character. The
wine is balanced and flavorful with intense
strawberry, cherry, and anise qualities, along with classic Pinot Noir aromas of cigar
box, tea leaves, and hints of damp forest floor. On the palate, the wine offers more of
the bright red tones with an incredibly rich texture and body. This is a
supple, elegant wine which will impress even the most demanding pinotphile. (264
cases)
- WILLOWBROOK CELLARS 2005 Estate Grown Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley
$34: "Our Estate Vineyard is in the heart of RRV and planted to three acres of
premium Dijon clones. The hilltop vineyard receives 180-degree sun, when
available, and cool breezes wafting up the Russian River from the ocean. This
combination of morning fog, warm sun and cool wind is ideal for fruit to develop full,
complex flavors while retaining acidity. In 2005, fruit production was slightly more
than two tons to the acre. Thinning of grape clusters early in the season yielded
lower tonnage but increased the quality of the fruit. This wine displays a deep ruby
color in the glass and offers inviting aromas of black cherry with hints of coffee and
spices. Ripe red fruit on the palate leads to lingering notes of cocoa, brown spice, and
fennel. With a supple mouthfeel and rich complexity, this wine is perfect for
pairing with a variety of dishes, or for sipping on its own. (300 cases)
- WILLOWBROOK CELLARS 2005 Kastania
Vineyard, Sonoma Coast $48: "This vineyard is in the
southernmost part of Sonoma County between the coast and San Francisco Bay. The
vineyard receives coastal influences from the Pacific on one side and the bay on the
other. Because the vines are tucked against a ridge on a south-facing slope, they are
protected from the blustery coastal winds for which this part of Sonoma is noted. 2005 was a mild growing season with
cooler summer temperatures than usual. For the first time in recent history, Pinot
Noir clones ripened at different times so we made a total of four passes over a five-week
period, picking roughly ten rows at a time. Though time-consuming, this allowed us
to harvest the grapes at optimum maturity and flavor. The wine was fermented in one-ton
fermenters using several different yeasts to bring out varying flavor profiles and to
produce a more complex finished product. Fermentation lots were aged separately for eleven
months in new tight-grain French oak barrels and blended prior to bottling. The wine has a bold character and abundant currant, coffee and cola
flavors with a strong black cherry finish. There are also aromas of cedar, mushroom, with
intense floral notes and bright sweet strawberries on the palate, coffee and cola
notes, with a strong black cherry finish. The Pomard clone added elegance and class
to the wine, along with aromas of cedar, mushroom, intense floral notes and bright sweet
strawberries on the palate. (302 cases)

OWL RIDGE wines: Owner John Tracy writes, "We began Owl Ridge
Wines to take advantage of the high-quality cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay grapes grown
in Sonoma County. Winemaker Joe Otos uses 100% French oak and winemaking techniques
that preserve the intensity of the fruit flavors. The resulting wines are big, but
balanced. We have now reached the point where our wines have begun to achieve
the recognition they deserve. Owl Ridge Wines was voted Best New Winery
at the 2006 Wine Literary Awards Tasting. This is a significant honor because more
than 80 wine writers voted in a secret ballot at a tasting that had 1000 wines.
We have also won 18 gold medals in the last year at major competitions. This
includes two Best of Class awards. Placements at restaurants and fine
wine outlets are beginning and will be listed on this website from time-to-time.
We have also just begun publicizing our wine club. Please
see www.owlridge.com
- OWL RIDGE 2003 Brigden Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County $55:
"Brigden is in the hills between Napas Spring Mountain and the northern Sonoma
Valley. High in the mountains, it experiences cooler days and warmer nights than its
valley neighbors, allowing the fruit to ripen evenly and slowly so the skins develop full
flavors and soft, well-developed tannins. The morning harvest began September 28,
with a clear, cool sky. Hand-harvested fruit was sorted in the field and again in
the winery. Fermentation was designed to achieve maximum extraction of
flavors, color and body with the right balance of tannins. After fermentation, the
wine was barrel-aged in 100% premium French oak, with 40% new barrels, principally
tight-grained oak from the Nevers and Bertrages forest. This wine resembles an
elegant Bordeaux blend even though it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is a
great balance between the two
counties, bringing forward the fruit and aromas of Sonoma Cabernets while offering the
dark tones and structure of some of the more balanced Napa Cabernets. While the wine is
enjoyable now, we think it will cellar well for many years. To promote this long aging
potential we have selected a heavy bottle and sealed it with an extremely long cork
(54mm). It won a Gold Medal at the 2006 San Francisco International Wine
Competition. Only 340 cases were produced.

MATUA has new releases from New Zealand. Matua Valley Wines began
as a small, family-run winery in West Auckland, New Zealand, in 1973. In the next
few years, winemakers Ross and Bill Spence quickly gained a reputation for innovative,
award-winning New Zealand wines - including the first New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Today, Matua Valley produces a wide range of distinctive wines--innovative, award-winning
New Zealand wines that are now enjoyed all over the world.
- MATUA 2006 Marlborough Pinot Noir, New Zealand $15: "Parcels
were machine harvested and fermented separately on skins utilizing various types of
vessels to complete the primary fermentation. A variety of yeast strains were used
to enhance various characters in the individual parcels and to create complexity in the
final blend. Malolactic fermentation was completed in a mix of seasoned French (20%)
and American (5%) oak along with stainless steel tanks. The parcels matured for five
months before final blending. Vibrant light cherry red in colour, the nose exhibits
perfumed violet aromas, complementing sweet cherry fruit. The palate displays soft,
rich sweet fruit, balanced with integrated lingering oak; resulting in a palate of length
and complexity. Try this pinot noir with Thai style lamb and peanuts with a lime
dressing."
- MATUA 2005 Gisbane Chardonnay, New Zealand $12: "Light golden
straw color with the tell tale green signs of youth. The nose has soft cream
characters from the malo, with primary fruits of green apples and subtle oak. The palate
is round, full and generous. Soft creamy fruit with delicate lingering oak. A
particularly good match with lemon and coriander chicken served with grilled stone fruits
on saffron ice."
- MATUA 2007 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand $12:
"Light green in colour, passionfruit and citrus fruits fill the nose complimented by
complexing flint. The palate is filled with tight passionfruit, melon and lemon fruit.
This is all kept in check by the distinctive and chalky Marlborough acidity. New
Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is best served when vibrant, up to two years from production.
Further cellaring will develop more mature characters. Try this flavourful Sauvignon
Blanc with snapper fillets served with fresh dill sauce."

throes of harvest, and although 2007 marks my 33rd, I have to say that it is still really
magical, exciting (and exhausting) time of year for me. 2007 has two significant
milestones for Sbragia Family Vineyards. First, we're crushing all our grapes at our
new winery in Dry Creek, and secondly, in November we will celebrate our one year
anniversary of being open to the public. I've really enjoyed welcoming old and new
friends to our winery. Our latest releases are the 2005 Gamble Ranch
Chardonnay ($40), 2004 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon ($50), 2004 Rancho del Oso Cabernet
Sauvignon ($75), and 2004 Wall Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ($75). My friend Duane
Wall's vineyard is on Mt. Veeder. He grows fantastic grapes, and, Duane is a cooper
as well so the wines are aged in his barrels.
- SBRAGIA Family Vineyards 2004 Wall Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Mt.
Veeder $75: "The cabernet from this remote vineyard has a dense purple color with
classic crème de cassis, black plum and cedar characteristics. The wine pops with
mint, blackberry and spice aromas that lead into intense rich fruit and spice flavors and
powerful tannins. There is nothing demure about this wine, from the passionate wine
grower and cooper, to its big structured tannins and long finish. I expect it will
age for many years and can't wait to sit on the picnic bench at Duane's vineyard and taste
multiple vintages with him."
- SBRAGIA Family Vineyards 2004 Rancho del Oso Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell
Mtn. $75: "Betty O'Shaughnessy's vineyard is at the very top of Howell Mountain and
is named for the red bear that climbs the deer fence and swims in the reservoir. I
love the vineyards big fruit flavors and intensity. My son Adam and I made this Cab
like we make all our reds--pick the fruit when the tannins are ripe so only minimal
winemaker intervention will be needed. After crushing, the juice was fermented and
then aged for almost two years in some of my favorite thin-staved Chateau barrels from the
Nevers forest. Because the tannins were nice and mature, the wine has power and
suppleness at the same time. The wine pops with black cherry, cola and chocolate
cherry aromas that lead to lush, dark fruit flavors of blackberries and dark black
cherries and a hint of framboise liquer. It has structured tannins, enjoy with a
seared steak."
- SBRAGIA Family Vineyards 2004 Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma $50:
"Fortunately, my friend Mike Martini has continued to share a couple of blocks of
this Sonoma Valley vineyard's grapes with me. Like most mountain vineyards, the
vines at Monte Rosso are subject to stress factors that ultimately help shape the flavor
of the wine. The high elevation features decomposed volcanic rock that is
mineral-rich, well drained and porous, encouraging the vines to reach deep for water.
The fruit produced here is elegant and rich with intense flavors and good acidity
and concentrated aromas and flavors of black cherry, plum and black currant, cedar notes,
vanilla, red cassis, mint, caramelized brown sugar, mocha and spice, velvety texture and a
juicy finish, and well paired with leg of lamb."
- SBRAGIA Family Vineyards 2005 Gamble Ranch Chardonnay, Napa Valley $40:
"I like to craft Gamble Ranch Chardonnay as rich and full-bodied as possible while
keeping the wine in balance and maintaining the vineyard's terroir and expression.
This wine had a month-long barrel fermentation, 100% malolactic and then aged in 100% new
French Burgundian oak barrels for 18 months. We stirred the lees weekly to integrate
wood influences and add layers of flavors. The wine has tropical fruit aromas,
especially pineapple, hints of pear, crème brulee, buttercream and citrus with hints of
coconut and smokiness and a nutty character. Enjoy with fresh prawns sautéed in
butter and garlic."

WINE THAT LOVES is the new food and wine concept that pairs
wines with the appropriate foods right on the label. The wines are currently
matched with pasta, pizza, roasted chicken, grilled steak and soon grilled salmon.
- WINE THAT LOVES GRILLED STEAK $13 was enjoyed at my table
with my students--including the grilled steak! Wine That Loves Grilled
Steak recommends: Intensity -- This high flavor-intensity dish requires
a high intensity wine. If the wine has too little intensity, the flavor of the wine will
be lost and you will miss the opportunity to enjoy the interplay of the two flavors.
Acidity: Grilled steak has a dark and mellow flavor, so the right wine needs
low acidity. Too much acidity would create a sharp taste that sticks out and distracts
from the pleasure of the dish Tannin:Because of the mouth-filling
flavor of grilled steak, the right wine needs to be medium in tannin to give the wine a
taste impression that is big enough to match the substantial mouth presence of this dish.
Flavor: The dominant flavors of this dish are dark so the wine that
complements it needs fruit flavors that are in the dark fruit family. Other dark flavors
in the wine bring an interesting complexity to the overall taste experience.

KENWOOD VINEYARDS 29th
ARTIST SERIES CABERNET: "Californias finest expression of art and wine
gains a new masterpiece with Kenwood Vineyards 2003 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon
($70)," says Margie Healy, Kenwood VP. "This 29th edition
combines the artistic expressions of Winemaker Pat Henderson and artist Vincent van Gogh,
which help continue the Artist Series as an American classic."
¶ The Series began (1975) with handcrafting and labeling the finest
Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon and a unique label of fine art. It instantly became
one of Californias most coveted and collected wines. ¶ Cabernet
Sauvignon selected from the best hillside lots fermented separately in
temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, then each lot was racked into primarily
small French oak barrels to age for 29 months. After bottling, the wine aged an
additional 18 months before release. ¶ This wine exhibits aromas and flavors
of black currant, raspberry and blueberry, complemented by mint and bittersweet chocolate
notes. Concentrated raspberry, blueberry and black cherry flavors show layered complexity
against a subtle spice background. Impressive weight, structure and balance combine with
integrated tannins to give this youthful Cabernet Sauvignon opulence on the palate that
stays focused through the long finish. Approachable now, this Artist Series Cabernet
Sauvignon should continue to evolve in the cellar for several years. ¶
The 2003 Artist Series label features The Starry Night, a famous painting by
Vincent van Gogh. Born in Holland (1853), van Gogh was a post-Impressionist whose
work influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism and early abstraction. "The
Starry Night" was painted in June of 1889 during his stay at France's
Saint-Rémy asylum. It uses swirling brushstrokes and saturated color to
communicate heartfelt drama and emotion. It was created just 13 months before the
artists death in 1890. ¶ The Artist Series is one of four Kenwood Vineyards Cabernet
Sauvignons. The winery also makes Jack London Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma
County Cabernet Sauvignon, and Yulupa Cabernet Sauvignon, produced exclusively for
restaurants.

LAKE SONOMA 2005 Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley $17: "Enjoy barbecue with feasts of ribs, steaks, chicken, fish or links, sweet or spicy
sauces, slow cooked or gently seared. This Lake Sonoma Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
has the robust fruit and spice to pair deliciously with hearty fare.
¶ Dry Creek Valley, widely acknowledged as Californias best
appellation for growing Zinfandel, gives this Zinfandel impressive berry character, but
it's the care from vine to bottle that gives it one-of-a-kind appeal. A range of
vineyard techniques, from opening the canopy to harvesting when the grapes are
physiologically ripe, but not overripe, provides generous fruit and balanced
acidity. In the winery, gentle pressing after fermentation helps minimize tannin
extraction and 18 months aging in small, mostly seasoned French and American oak barrels
allows the wine to gain subtle complexity. ¶ The wine displays aromas
of raspberry and blackberry, a spice background with subtle vanilla, raspberry and
blackberry dominating the flavors, with hints of black pepper. Impressively
mouthfilling and polished with seamlessly layered fruit and soft, elegant tannins, this
Zinfandel remains silky smooth through its lingering finish.
