WINERY OF THE MONTH: KENWOOD VINEYARDS, Named Best All-around Winery at Houston--KENWOOD VINEYARDS was founded in 1970 when wine enthusiasts from San Francisco Bay refurbished and modernized the former Pagani Brothers Winery, originally established in 1906.  Ideally located in the heart of Sonoma Valley, KENWOOD VINEYARDS is named after the town and is committed to producing premium wines that reflect Sonoma County's finest vineyards and define the region's grape varieties in their true character and style.  The winery produces classic varietal wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Merlot, which have earned the reputation of producing consistent, quality wines.   KENWOOD sits on a beautiful 22-acre producing estate.  The winery also uses fruit sourced from some of the Sonoma County's best vineyards.  Using the cuvée winemaking method, the harvest from each vineyard is handled separately to preserve its individuality and true character.  Such small-lot winemaking allows Winemaker Pat Henderson to bring each lot of wine to its fullest potential as is shown in the blending of KENWOOD VINEYARDS Reserve and Jack London series.   The finest barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon are selected to blend the acclaimed Artist Series wines, which reveal the evident rewards of this dedication to excellence.   True to history, the winery is housed in the original winery buildings.  Inside, the winery has been redesigned with winemaking versatility in mind.  More than 125 stainless steel fermenting and upright oak tanks are used in combination with 14,000 French and American oak barrels that give the winemaker flexibility and diversity in production.   With hard work and dedication to quality over the past quarter century, this winery has earned the reputation of making excellent wines.  Currently producing 550,000 cases of wine, fourth generation Sonoma County vintner and owner, Gary Heck, is dedicated to excellence and optimistic about the winery's continuing growth in the 21st Century. www.kenwoodvineyards.com    KENWOOD VINEYARDS was named "TOP ALL-AROUND WINERY" at the 2007 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition.  The award recognized KENWOOD as the individual winery having the greatest number of medal-winning wines as determined by the Competition's scoring system.  The gold medal-winning KENWOOD 2005 Russian River Valley Reserve won the Competition's Reserve Class Champion.   The 2003 Kenwood Vineyards Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon likewise received a gold medal. Twelve other Kenwood Vineyards wines also garnered medals from the Competition’s judges, from a total of 628 medals awarded this year. Now in its fourth year, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s International Wine Competition drew 1,580 wine entries from 443 wineries including Heck Estates’ Kenwood, Valley of the Moon and Lake Sonoma.    In true Texas fashion, Kenwood Vineyards will be rewarded with a custom-made saddle for winning “Top All-Around Winery.” The major awards for the 2007 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s International Wine Competition will be presented – and the top wines tasted – at the 2007 Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup and Best Bites Competition on February 27th at the legendary Reliant Astrodome. The award-winning wines also will be sold to the highest bidders at the 2007 Rodeo Uncorked! Champion Wine Auction and Dinner on March 3rd, an event that is already completely sold out.   Lake Sonoma Winery also fared well.  The 2003 Lake Sonoma Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon earned Double Gold and was crowned Champion in its class.    Based in Sonoma County, Heck Estates represents three of California’s most respected premium wineries – Kenwood Vineyards, Valley of the Moon Winery and Lake Sonoma Winery.  In addition, the company markets Korbel Brandy, one of the top brandy producers in the United StatesEstablished in 1970 in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards handcrafts premium Sonoma County wines that showcase the excellence of the region’s world class vineyards.

NEWS

U.S. WINE EXPORTS JUMP 30 PERCENT IN 2006:  U.S. wine exports (95% Californian) totaled $876 million and 404.5 million liters in 2006, (30% value increase; 4.0% in volume) compared to 2005.  Exports surged 48% in value in Europe, representing half U.S. sales abroad; 29% exports increase to Canada. ¶    "The long-term trend of California wine exports shows steady expansion in all major markets and growth in new, undeveloped markets,” stated Joseph Rollo, Director of the Wine Institute International Department.    ¶  Trade barriers make the growth even more impressive.  ¶   “California wineries are producing wines that suit the international palate and leads the rosé category, a growing segment in Europe," stated John McLaren, Wine Institute UK Director.  ¶        Other major growth markets outside of Europe and Canada include: China, up 53 percent by value; Singapore, up 68 percent by value; and Hong Kong, up 19 percent by value.  ¶  “China’s increased growth rate is significant because of the market’s huge potential—the country’s economic growth and the number of consumers who can afford imported wine continue to grow.  Our trade missions have brought new brands to the market, and our participation in trade shows and retail promotions have been successful in increasing the sales of brands active in China,” said Eric Pope, Wine Institute Manager of International Winery Programs. “In addition, Hong Kong has again become a growth market and should continue to increase now that the import tariff of 80 percent has been cut in half,” he added.

KENDALL-JACKSON CELEBRATES 25th ANNIVERSARY: A Letter From Founder Jess Jackson Twenty-five years seems like yesterday. I cherish the memory of bottling our first Kendall-Jackson Vintner*s Reserve Chardonnay--the 1982 vintage--in a modest metal barn that served as our Lakeport winery.  What joy we had introducing the wine to visitors, many of them from my San Francisco law firm. Only later did we establish a more formal tasting room in a converted shed near the winery. It featured a big oak plank laid over two upturned wine barrels.  As I traveled the coastal regions of California during the early 1980s searching for the "perfect chardonnay vineyard," I found a few special places that produced extraordinary grapes with distinctive character and flavor. Tepusquet in Santa Barbara County, La Reina in Monterey County, and Les Pierres in Sonoma County were three of those special vineyards  that became the backbone of Vintner*s Reserve Chardonnay.  We've always worked hard to ensure that our winery stays one step ahead of cultural tastes and two steps ahead of our competition. Kendall-Jackson has built its reputation on consistency and quality, something that has not been lost on those wine lovers who have contributed to our success.  I*m proud to say that Kendall-Jackson is America*s best-selling "attainable luxury" wine. We achieved that mantle by maintaining a simple, single-minded vision--to make world-class wines we needed world-class vineyards. So over the years, my family and I have acquired vineyards in premier, maritime-influenced wine growing regions along California*s cool coast.  In 2004, we evolved our Vintner*s Reserve program to "Jackson Estates Grown," a tier that ensures total viticultural and quality control over the vineyards from which we source grapes. Our Grand Reserve wines are now dual appellation and moving toward single appellation designations.   As our Estate vineyards move beyond their teenage years, you will see a natural progression of fruit quality experienced in our Highland Estates program. Needless to say, you can expect another evolution in the Vintner*s Reserve wines.  From our Vintner*s Reserve Chardonnay to Grand Reserve Merlot to Hawkeye Mountain Highland Estates Cabernet Sauvignon, each grape exhibits a flavor directly tied to its terroir. These grapes are grown exclusively on mountains, ridges, hillsides and benches along the cool coastal regions of California.  From the Santa Maria Bench and Los Alamos Hills in Santa Barbara County, the hillsides of Sonoma County*s Bennett Valley and steep Hawkeye Mountain high above the Alexander Valley, the ridges of Anderson Valley in Mendocino County, Howell Mountain above Napa Valley*s Calistoga, the gravelly bench of the Arroyo Seco in Monterey County, Annapolis Vineyard at the western edge of Sonoma Coast, to the steep slopes of Mount St. Helena in Sonoma County*s Knights Valley--these are just some of the special places where grapes are grown to our strict standards of precision farming. Our commitment to the stewardship of these lands has never been greater. Over the past five years, my family and I have instituted a number of sustainable farming methods throughout our Estates vineyards. Included are the use of soil erosion controls, planting cover crops to attract beneficial insects, elimination of certain herbicides and insecticides, and creating large wildlife corridors and riparian breaks along major watersheds. The number of acres that we purposely leave unplanted in grapes exceeds the number of those that are planted.  We are very proud of our environmental stewardship in the vineyard and our pursuit of truth in labeling. These commitments along with our passion for excellence in the vineyards and our ongoing pledge to making wines of superior quality are what keep our fires burning.  There is still much to learn and there are still more vineyards to walk. I am joined by my wife, Barbara, and our family, in celebrating Kendall-Jackson*s first 25 years of accomplishments. Here*s to the next 25 years and beyond. Signed, Jess Jackson, Owner & Proprietor.

NEW RELEASES (quotes are winemakers' comments)

KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2006 Gewürztraminer, Sonoma County $11: "KENWOOD has produced Gewürztraminer for more than 25 years and the 2006 offers distinctive and irresistible fresh fruit character to this light, quaffable white wine.  Pronounced guh-VERTS-truh–mee-ner, premium grapes come from Russian River Valley where the marine-influence allows slow ripening to develop its distinctive fruit and spice character.  The wine has aromas and flavors of fresh peach, honeysuckle and ginger with a background mineral complexity, apricot, lime and orange zest  that meld seamlessly with an off-dry finish and crisp, refreshing acidity.

KENWOOD 2006 Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County $13: "This award-winning Sauvignon Blanc has vibrant character front and center.  Kenwood's fruit-driven style exudes meticulous winemaking.  Individual lots are fermented and then kept in cool, refrigerated stainless steel tanks until blending and bottling to preserve and maximize freshness.  The wine is released within months of harvest, full of fresh aromas of lemon, gooseberry and fresh-cut herbs, plus a hint of mineral.  Fresh lemon and fresh-cut herbs highlight the generous flavors, complemented by honeydew melon.   Bright, crisp and balanced with uncommon smoothness.

VALLEY OF THE MOON  2003 Cuvée de la Luna, Sonoma County $30:  "A classic blend of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it is the definitive expression of claret-style fruit, depth and complexity. There is no set formula for Cuvée de la Luna; the flavor profile of the year’s grapes guides the decisions on which and how much of each variety to assemble in the cuvée. In 2003, for the first time we included a significant percentage of Petit Verdot and the wine shows the delicious character of  Petit Verdot’s influence--a rare grape in California and Bordeaux because it ripens late and has small yields.  Its deep color and powerful fruit adds intense blueberry, violet and spice character to Cabernet Sauvignon wines, especially in the mid-palate. Not surprisingly, it is a grape that is finally beginning to get some attention, though plantings of Petit Verdot total only 1,500 acres for all of California.  Rich, ripe aromas of currant, blueberry and black cherry, accented by subtle cedar notes, highlight the 2003 Valley of the Moon Cuvée de la Luna’s Bordeaux-inspired personality. Densely packed black cherry and blueberry flavors gain complexity from background anise and spice nuances. For all its powerful fruit, this is an impressively smooth, balanced wine, one with sufficient “soft” tannins to promise additional development with cellaring. Only 460 cases of the 2003 Valley of the Moon Winery Cuvée de la Luna were produced. It is available at the winery and in select markets nationally at a suggested retail of $30. Valley of the Moon Winery welcomes visitors daily to its beautifully restored cellar in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. In addition to Cuvée de la Luna, the winery produces Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Sangiovese.                          ______________________________________________________________________

ESTANCIA:  "At Estancia, we take a boutique-winery approach, where quality is the result of attention to every detail, and it begins in our Monterey and Paso Robles vineyards. We control the process from the start—from the trials in our own experimental vineyard blocks, to planting, harvesting, fermenting and aging of the wines.      We’re built a winery that allows us to devote the same attention to detail in winemaking that we give to our proprietor-grown grapes. We’ve added open-top fermenters and small basket presses for our Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio and new red-wine fermentation tanks that are custom-fitted for the diverse vineyard blocks of Cabernet and Zinfandel in our Paso Robles vineyard.    Ultimately, it is this hands-on crafting of the wines, from proprietor-grown grapes to the highest standards for winemaking that lets us deliver the highest quality and value. Our aim is to over-deliver with delicious, easy-drinking wines for today’s casual lifestyle."

MADROÑA Estate Grown wines has introduced its new Black Label line of limited wines.  Historically, Madroña Vineyards is named for the majestic old madrone tree which stands in the middle of the vineyard.    Warm days and cool nights in historic El Dorado produce grapes with excellent balance and intense varietal character.  At an elevation of 3,000 feet (one of the highest vineyards in California), it claims truly the distinction of mountain-grown wines.    Early in the 1970's, Dick Bush was convinced that the climate, soil and topography in the foothills of El Dorado County could  produce outstanding wine.    In 1973, Dick, his wife Leslie, and their children, parents and friends planted their first 35 acres of vines.  More than two decades of  personal family attention to every part of the winemaking process, has helped fulfill the promise of this re-emerging region and now has passed on to the next generation, Paul Bush.  He has planted new vineyards and varieties and continues the tradition and commitment.   Over twenty years old, the 35-acre estate vineyards are in their prime.  Originally planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Johannisberg Riesling, the family has added Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Gewürtztraminer.  An old-world philosophy prevails at Madroña with nearly all aspects of vineyard production done by hand.  This intensive handwork coupled with an integrated-pest-management system fosters low-impact agriculture while producing wine grapes of the highest quality.   Paul believes you’ll appreciate the family’s commitment to small-batch, high integrity winemaking. "We’ve been growing premium winegrapes here in El Dorado’s highest vineyard elevations since 1973.  Our estate wines come from some of the highest vineyards in El Dorado's Sierra Nevada Mountains.  I manage the vineyards and add to the family’s knowledge of grape varieties, clones within a variety, and microclimates.  Intensive hands-on vineyard practices make wines that are exceeding what we thought possible at these high elevations,” says Paul, “and we’re going to keep on improving over the next 30 years.”

SBRAGIA Family Vineyards, my friend Ed Sbragia tells me, "is a dream that I’ve had for some time, a small family-owned winery making limited, individual lots of wine from grapes grown in select blocks of my favorite vineyards.   A big part of the appeal of doing my own label is working with my family. My son, Adam, has been helping out around harvest and with the blends and will take on a larger role as the label grows.  The family vineyards are my father’s legacy to me and my children.  I love this land and making wine from it, and bottling it under the family name affirms all the work my father did for me.   It’s something I had to do to say thank you to him, my dad, Gino.   I’ve always had one foot in Sonoma and the other in Napa.   Both areas mean a lot to me emotionally. I’m more attached to Dry Creek because it’s where I raised my kids.  But the wines that I’ve made at Beringer are like children, so Napa is also a very special place to me.  Either way, the wines are intensely personal, an expression not only of terroir, but of my family’s winemaking heritage.  The wines from Dry Creek Valley include the Home Ranch Chardonnay and Merlot, Gino's Vineyard Zinfandel and  Andolsen Cabernet Sauvignon.

DRY CREEK VINEYARDS has new spring releases and Director of Communications Bill Smart thinks they are among the best made in the history of the winery.  "That may sound a little boastful," he tells me, "but the excitement here is very tangible--we're all really energized."

JOSEPH PHELPS Vineyards has new spring releases.  Winemaker Craig Williams says the 2004 vintage was "high quality and reduced yields.  It   was quite  warm in early spring, then balmy through July.  On August 27, a three-week heat spell began with many days over 100.  From ten to forth per cent of the crop yields were reduced.  Our job in crafting the 2004 wines was to moderate over-ripe characteristics, but from the very beginning the aromas and flavors drifting out of the fermenters signaled outstanding quality."

BOUCHAINE produces limited amounts of fine wines.  Bouchaine Vineyards inhabits the oldest continually operated winery in the Carneros wine region. The site was first planted to vines and orchards in the mid-1800s by pioneer Boon Fly. My friend of long standing, Mike Richmond--also a Texan--manages and makes BOUCHAINE wines.  The most noteworthy change in winemaking style has occurred with the hiring of Mike in 2002-- winemaker and general manager.  Mike has over 30 years experience in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir production in the Carneros including his founding of Acacia Winery.  He and the Bouchaine winemaking team have updated both farming and winemaking to bring the wines to a new standard of excellence.

RAYMOND Vineyards 2006 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley $14: "The grapes for this wine came from small, secluded valleys in the eastern portion of Napa Valley--ideal for producing clean, crisp sauvignon blanc fruit with citrus overtons." This wine is excellent for many seafood dishes, sipping by itself or enjoying with a number of refreshing dishes.

STERLING Vineyards has released five new red wines from the 2004 vintage.  Winemaker Michael Westrick says he feels the 2004 vintage is a new milestone for Sterling Vineyards.  "It clearly shows the new direction we are taking our Reserve-tier wines.  Along with the entire winemaking team I am looking to increase extraction color, depth and complexity in the Reserves.  Our goal is to create wines that display power, tempered by plushness and finesse.  2004 was strong and made achieving these goals seem easy, producing wines with increased concentration, structure and balance.  The style is delicious now, but is really made with aging in mind."

RODNEY STRONG 2003 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $25:   "Rod Strong recognized the Alexander Valley as an ideal place to grow cabernet sauvignon as far back as 1971, when he planted our first cabernet vineyard, the Alexander’s Crown.  We are especially proud of our estate vineyards, which we farm meticulously, matching grape variety to soil and climate, and selecting our harvest dates with great care." The Alexander Valley signature, or terroir, is evident in this delicious Cabernet: bold fruit aromas and flavors centered on red plum and boysenberry, and a rich and mouthfilling texture with soft tannins, all of which we’ve framed in the finest oak barrels for 18 months.  Enjoy over the next 3 – 6 years,: says Winemaker Rick Sayre.

RODNEY STRONG 2005 Chalk Hill Chardonnay $20: "This crisp, creamy   wine shows fruit character with mineral and toasty oak flavors,”says Winemaker Rick Sayre.  "Our founder, Rod Strong, planted chardonnay in our original Chalk Hill Vineyard in 1965, and later spearheaded the establishment of the Chalk Hill Viticultural Area in 1983.  He recognized the region as distinct from the rest of Russian River Valley for its unique chalky white soils, which impart a subtle mineral character to wines grown there.  2005 had a late bud break during an unseasonably cool and wet spring.  Record May rains luckily came before bloom for chardonnay, and an average to cool summer further contributed to a harvest about three weeks later than normal.  A rain-free harvest had ideal temperatures for all varieties, and we finished harvesting chardonnay by October 18.   Barrel fermentation in new and seasoned French oak added toasty vanilla and spice complexities, and during 10 months of barrel aging, we regularly stirred the “lees” in barrel, which gives a fullness and creamy texture on the palate.  Malolactic fermentation adds creaminess."

HARLOW RIDGE, from Bronco Wine Company, is part of the NAPA RIDGE family of wines.  Winemaker Bob Stashak says "place is important for producing fine wines.  The vineyard or regional sources for a particular varietal are critical in achieving wine of quality, versatility and value.  California's Lodi appellation is fast becoming known for its rich and expressive red wines and white wines that are lively with lost of fruit character."

BERINGER THIRD CENTURY (BERINGER III) is the name of new wines created by Winemaker Mary Sullivan.  She says, "It's with great pleasure and excitement that I present BERINGER THIRD CENTURY wines' first vintage.  My hope is to introduce a new generation of wine drinkers to the legacy and quality of BERINGER VINEYARDS.   These wines are a reflection of and a tribute to the three centuries  of winemaking excellence that began at BERINGER in 1876.  I am proud of the rich flavors and complexity they showcase, as well as their overall approachability and value."  There are four varietals available within BERINGER THIRD CENTURY.

OROGENY: the geological term comes from Greek, oro, mountain, and - geny, birth.  Orogeny is the process during which the collisions and separations of the earth's crust form mountains.  The last orogenic episode in Sonoma County created Green Valley, the unique source of grapes for these deliciously memorable wines.  {OROGENY} 2005 Green Valley Pinot Noir  and introducing the first release of {OROGENY} 2005 Green Valley Chardonnay.   Green Valley  is a small slice of land within the southwestern portion of the Russian River Valley.   Green Valley's comparatively cool climate (with large temperature variations from day to night) ripens fruit slowly, earning this appellation the reputation as a frontier for cool-climate varieties.  Warm days promote sugar and color development in the grapes.  Cool nights help preserve the grapes' acidity and lengthen the growing season.  The area's Gold Ridge soils are a mix of sandy loam over sandstone and clay.   These soils provide excellent drainage while reducing the vine's vigor, which promotes even ripening and produces the smaller grapes that lead to concentrated flavors.

Fresh pineapple and lemon also highlight the elegant flavors, and lead to a dry, lingering finish.   The 2004 Kenwood Red Table Wine brings together several grape varieties, including Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Barbera, in a medium-bodied red. Individual vineyard lots were aged in French and American oak barrels for 18 months, resulting in uncommon complexity for a wine of this price.   Ripe, generous aromas and flavors of blackberry, blueberry and cherry are complemented by spice nuances that enhance its approachable style.  Established in 1970 in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, Kenwood Vineyards has earned an international reputation for handcrafted Sonoma County wines that showcase the region’s world class vineyards.

ROSEMOUNT ESTATE:  In a little over 30 years, Rosemount Estate has established itself as one of Australia's leading wineries, producing a selection of fine wines that reflect the riches of the Australian climate and an unswerving dedication to winemaking quality, innovation and style.   Much has changed over the years, however, the commitment to quality that defined the original vision for Rosemount Estate's humble beginnings in the Hunter Valley has remained intact. LLANO ESTACADO celebrates its 31st year producing wines in Lubbock, Texas.   Vice President Executive Winemaker Greg Bruni tells me there is much news about Llano Estacado.  "Things are busier and bigger and better than ever with Llano Estacado.  We celebrated Chris Hull's 10th year with us by making him winemaker during the winery's 30 year in 2006.    Last year we sold   over 100,000 cases of Llano Estacado premium wine.  Then there's the expansion of our production facility and we're adding 11,000 square feet of new warehouse as well as 40,000 gallons of new tanks.  We're building two truck docks, a new bottling room, and a humidified, temperature-controlled space for 750 oak barrels."   Beginning in the spring of 2007 Llano Estacado embarked on an aggressive three-year expansion of its vineyard operations.   "Our plan is to develop 115 additional acres of new Texas vineyards over the next few years.

KENDALL-JACKSON has released several new winesThe Vintner's Reserve line exemplifies the "Jackson Estates Grown" approach to winemaking.  "Every grape for these wines was grown under our direct viticultural control, sourced exclusively from vineyards along California's cool coast.  Combined with skillful blending, this meticulous attention to grape sourcing allows us to ensure the highest quality wine year after year.  Our winemaking starts with elevated vineyards that produce exceptional grapes.  For harvest, press and fermentation, we use the gentlest techniques.   Our wines are kept in separate lots with focused barrel regimes and we maintain control over every step in the process.  We have invested in our own stave mill in France to ensure a constant supply of the highest quality of oak barrels in which to age our wine.  Once in the barrels, our winemakers frequently test and wait for the perfect time to handcraft each wine.  Kendall-Jackson Winemaster Randy Ullom leads our team of winemakers,  who continually focus on layering the outstanding flavors to create wines with depth and complexity."

BONTERRA VINEYARDS has released a couple of delicious wines for your pleasure.  Public Relations Manager Jim Caudill tells me that the 2005 Zinfandel is the first BONTERRA Zin to come home in quite some time, since many previous vintages were offered only in the United Kingdom and Europe, where demand was so strong those folks drank all of it.  "Additional sourcing and new rationale combined to return this Mendocino-made Zinfandel back home."  Bonterra has several biodynamic and organically farmed offerings from Bonterra.

GEORGE ROSE'S NEW BOOK: THE ART OF TERROIRHere is boundless, bound beauty.  George Rose is a friend of long standing and a talented photographer.  He is Vice President of Public Relations at Kendall-Jackson Winery and a Pulitzer Prize-nominated former Los Angeles Times photographer.  His photographs have appeared in Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stones and USA Today.  I've enjoyed an eighteen-year friendship with George and asked him for an update.  "I started at the Los Angeles Times as a staff photographer in 1976.  Left the Times in 1983 to purchase a newspaper in Mendocino County--The Mendocino Grapevine.  Sold the newspaper in 1985 and returned to Los Angeles to work freelance for Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, etc.  I had a call from Jim Fetzer in 1989--our friendship began when I owned the newspaper.  He was looking for a PR person.  I told him I didn't know any PR types, at which point he asked me if I wanted the job.  I told him I didn't know a thing about formal PR.   He hired me on the spot!   And, as they say, the rest is history.   Fetzer Vineyards 1989-1998; Clos du Bois 1998-2003; K-J 2003 to the present.  What a ride.  Hope this helps explain the detour from photography."      The THE ART OF TERROIR chronicles the panoramic beauty of some of California's most elite mountain and hillside vineyards as they progress through their seasonal changes.   More than 80 color images depicting Kendall-Jackson's Estate vineyards in Sonoma, Napa, Monterey, Santa Barbara and Mendocino counties are pictured.  Rod Smith has written lyrical essays to accompany the photography.  Terroir is the total environment for vine growth, that combination of light, water, air and soil that helps determine a wine's flavor and complexity.  To purchase, please see: kj.com; (800) 769-3649; WineAppreciation.com; Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble bookstores.
