WINERY OF THE MONTH: KENWOOD Vineyards KENWOOD Vineyards was founded in 1970 when wine enthusiasts from the San Francisco Bay Area refurbished and modernized the former Pagani Brothers Winery, established in 1906.  The heart-of-Sonoma-Valley winery is named after the town (Kenwood) and committed to producing premium wines that reflect Sonoma's finest vineyards and define the region's grape varieties in their true character and style.  The varietal wines are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Gewürztraminer and Merlot, which offer consistent high quality and outstanding value at every price level.  The winery produces wines from its twenty-two-acre site and sources fruit from Sonoma County's finest vineyards. Using the "cuvée" winemaking method, the harvest from each vineyard is handled separately to preserve its individuality and true character.  Winemaker Pat Henderson uses small lots to create each wine's fullest potential as shown in the blending of Kenwood Vineyard's Reserve, Jack London, and Single Vineyard Series' Wines. The ultimate expression of Kenwood's winemaking philosophy, initiated in 1975, is embodied in its highly acclaimed Artist Series, a blend of the finest barrels of Cabernet that reveal the evident rewards of this dedication to excellence. "After nearly 30 years,  Kenwood Vineyards' remains the ultimate expression of artistry and fine wine," CEO Gary Heck tells me.  "This wine represents the very best  Sonoma County has to offer.  Each vintage is an original, crafted over time with artful precision--much like the artwork showcased on every bottle.  Together the wine and artist make each Artist Series release a celebration and each vintage a prime collectable." ¶  Grapes and artwork are equally selective.  Kenwood's Artist Series Cabernet continues to use the finest fruit, but the winemaking philosophy has evolved over the years.  The initial style of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon with lots of oak aroma and flavor has evolved to a lighter Bordeaux-style blend (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc) with subtle oak complexity.   Likewise, the scope of art is broad--from impressionist and romantic to modern and abstract.  ¶  At Kenwood, grapes from Sonoma County's finest vineyards get the attention they deserve.   Happily, I've been enjoying Kenwood's quality wines from Kenwood for years.

RODNEY STRONG died on March 5 from complications of a stroke.  He had been in failing health for four years.  His wife, Charlotte Strong, died in 2003.  They leave no children.  "We are deeply saddened by the loss of this great man and friend," said Tom Klein, owner of Rodney Strong Vineyards.  "Rod has been a tremendous influence and leader for me from the first time I met in the early 1980s until my family acquired the winery.  We will miss him.  Rod was an exuberant, graceful, and articulate pioneer of the wine industry in Sonoma County.  He was among the first to advocate vineyard-designated wines in Sonoma County, releasing the first single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon in 1974, the 'Alexander's Crown Cabernet Sauvignon."   ¶  After a successful international career in the world of dance, Rod followed his heart into the wine business, launching Tiburon Vintners in 1959.  In the 1906s he purchased and planted vineyard acreage in many of Sonoma County's best appellations. His passion remained championing wines of the region.   The Klein family purchased Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1989, and for several years thereafter Rod continued as a consultant, spokesman and advisor.

In 2003 Cosentino won the Andre Tchelistcheff Winemaker of the Year Award. www.cosentinowinery.com (please see below)

WINE INSTITUTE reported that the US and EC signed a trade agreement.  California winemakers applauded the agreement by officials of the European Community (EC) and the U.S. on key provisions of wine trade talks that began in 1983. The Wine Institute, whose members export 95 percent of U.S. wine,  praised the work of U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman who signed the bilateral agreement on winemaking practices and labeling of wine with EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Mariann Fischer Boel in London.  James Murphy, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative, who led the negotiations on behalf of the U.S. government, also attended the ceremony.  The agreement addresses issues on mutual recognition of U.S. and EC winemaking practices, wine place names of origin, limitation of U.S. use of certain semi-generic names in the U.S. market, and certification simplification for both markets.  It is the first phase of a broader agreement intended to promote trade between the U.S and EC, which are major destinations for one another’s exports.  ¶  “This agreement removes a major impediment to future growth of U.S. wines overseas,” said Eric Wente, Chairman of the Wine Institute.   “With more stable market conditions, California vintners can focus on promoting the high quality, value and distinctiveness of their wines and on California’s commitment to sustainable winegrowing.”  ¶  Total U.S. wine exports to all markets reached $658 million in revenues in 2005.  Nearly half of U.S. wine exports ($325 million) were shipped to countries in the European Community, the largest market for American wines.    For European wine producers, who exported $2.6 billion worth of wine to the U.S. market last year, the agreement ensures continued access to its top export destination and a major growth market – the U.S. is on course to become the world’s largest wine consumer by 2008.

SHAFER Vineyards announced the final vintage for FIREBREAK;  Doug Shafer's 2003 “Last Chance” FIREBREAK® bids farewell to Sangiovese. "As the nickname of this release indicates, this will be our final vintage of Firebreak. While this wine has won over many critics and consumers, ultimately we believe Shafer’s vineyard property is better suited to producing high quality fruit for our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and for Relentless.  With that in mind after the 2003 harvest, we replanted our Sangiovese sites to Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet.   The name Last Chance, by the way, harkens back some 20 years when we released our final Zinfandel and called it “Last Chance” Zin.  Then, as now, we made a choice to focus our efforts on varietals better suited for our site.  (Please see below)

The Balletto's began planting grapes for other wineries in 1995 and eventually converted over 300 acres of farm land to grapes. In 2001, the Balletto family started a winery and crushed their first crop of estate grown, Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Today, in addition to the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, they also handcraft Sonoma Coast Pinot Gris, Russian River Zinfandel, Syrah and Gewurtraminer.   The tasting room is open from 10 to 4 Thursday through Monday, expanding to 7 days a week in summer.  Phone: 707.823.3887, and valerie@duttongoldfield.com: Terri Balletto, Phone: 707.568.2455, and terri@ballettovineyards.com

REPORT ON 2005 BORDEAUX AS BEST: As the April tasting began in France, reported The Daily Telegraph, growers and chateaux proprietors are hailing the perfect conditions of last season as a prelude to possibly some of the best wines in a century. ¶  "It could be the best in 10 years, 50 years, even 100 years," said Adam Letchmere, the editor at large at Decanter.   "This vintage could be one of the greatest in terms of quality."  ¶  "The growing conditions were perfect, the weather was perfect, there was just enough rain and just enough sun. Everyone is very, very excited.   People are raving about it," said Jonathan Ray, wine correspondent of The Daily Telegraph. "By all accounts it is going to be an amazing vintage."   ¶  Each spring, the great wine-growing properties of Bordeaux produce young barrel samples from the previous year's harvest.  This is called en primeur, a trade term for wine that is sold as a future--before it is bottled.  The en primeur is assessed by the Bordeaux international wine trade.  Depending on their criticism, prices are then set.  It is expected to be astronomical this year.  Chateau owners take into account quality and quantity when pricing as well as the level of global interest.  Worldwide interest looks stronger than ever.  ¶   "Old cellarmen are saying this could be the greatest since '45, or '82 or 2000," said Mr Letchmere. "But this does appear to be a dream vintage."

KENDALL-JACKSON’S COUNTDOWN TO HARVEST 2006--Northern California Recovers From a Wet Winter and Soggy Spring: K-J Vice President  Communications George Rose tells me "it appears that California's so-called "100-Year Flood" cycle is now taking place about every eight to ten years.  Recalling the most recent "100-Year Flood" seasons of 1997-1998, 1994-1995, 1985-1986 and 1982-1983, a similar pattern is developing--a bountiful but late harvest, followed by a record-setting rainy period.  Though it is too early for definitive analysis, most vineyard experts on the North Coast expect a "smaller-than-average" crop this year based on inspections of vine dissections and early vine shoots and cluster development through May 1."  Don't forget the K-J 10th Annual Heirloom Tomato Festival, Saturday, September 9, 2006 at the k-J Wine Center, 5007 Fulton Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95439 Information (800) 769-3649 or www.kj.com

ALICE WHITE has introduced a new blended wine.  Added to the popular premium wine brand portfolio is the ALICE WHITE 2005 Cabernet (65%)-Merlot (35%) Australia $7.   "Blended wines are common in Australia, and store shelves continue to feature wines with hyphens on the labels,"says Alice White Brand Director Tim Peters.  "The 'Aussie-ness' of these wines may be part of their appeal--along with bright fruit flavors--plum, dark berry integrated with smoky, mocha, oak notes-- and great value.  "

        ____________________________________________________________________________

JOSEPH PHELPS 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $48: "This wine is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 3% Petite Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc and was aged 20 months in a combination of new French and American oak (55%).It shows dark ripe fruit aromas and flavors of plum and blackberry, the integration of subtle oak with cinnamon and allspice.  It has chocolate and typical cigar box notes with a velvet finish of sweet oak, cassis and well-balanced tannins."

        ____________________________________________________________________________

LAKE SONOMA 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley $22: "Cabernet Sauvignon can be challenging to make, as a diversity of elements - fruit, ripeness, balance, spice, depth and tannins - need to complement one another for it to achieve excellence.   However, every so often, a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon gets everything right.   This 2002 Lake Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon is such a wine: so delicious, so beautifully put together, it is the complete package.  ¶  Perfectly mature grapes from Alexander Valley gave this wine a solid foundation of fruit, depth and balance, but the winemaking brought everything into equilibrium: warm fermentation in stainless steel tanks, gentle pressing and cold setting to moderate tannin extraction, two years in French and American oak barrels for elegance, and malolactic fermentation in wood for integrated complexity.  It has aromas and flavors of black cherry, mint and pepper perfume, cassis and herb, with a touch of sweet vanilla in the background.  Shows plenty of  body, well-integrated tannins, and impressively smooth texture from entry all the way through to the balanced, lingering finish.

JADE MOUNTAIN has released two new wines.  The Mourvédre comes from Evangelho Vineyard,  planted in 1890, and is home to some of the oldest mourvédre grapes in the United States.  The small yield from these ancient vines produces a rich and silky wine with aromas of pepper and spice mixed with raspberry and blackberry.  La Provençale is a blend of red varietals best known from Provence.

  • JADE MOUNTAIN 2004 Mourvédre, Evangelho Vineyard, Contra Costa County, CA $20: " The wine is an uncomplicated and full bodied.  It is designed to reflect the fruit source with our winemaking techniques bringing out the best of the 100-year-old vines.  With a brooding, smoky raspberry nose, the wine is ripe and rich on the palate and balanced by bright acidity. Pair it with braised beef, veal or pork tenderloin."
  • MOUNTAIN MOUNTAIN 2004 La Provençale, Red Wine, California $20: "Mourvédre, grenache and syrah grapes are best known for the spirited red wines of Provence and the Rhône valley.  We combined them to make this wine unabashedly enjoyable with food.  It is the lightest and freshest wine we make, with bright, clear cranberry-raspberry and fruit layering character.  It offers ripe, smoky berries with hints of exotic spices, rounded with bright fruit, soft silky finish and to be enjoyed with soups, braised beef and veal dishes."

BROWN-FORMAN Beverages Worldwide has released two wines, one from JEKEL and one from FIVE RIVERS.

VALLEY OF THE MOON 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County $20: "Cabernet Sauvignon loves a view and  produces especially fine hillside grapes.  In 2002, Valley of the Moon sourced most of its Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from upland vineyards, showing bold fruit and a combination of growing conditions give the grapes their impressive hillside-heritage personality.  Hillsides have thin, gravelly soils and limited water, so the vines work harder to grow and produce.  As a result, the vines yield less grapes that are small, thick-skinned and packed with character.  Hillside temperatures are both less hot during the day (by as much as 15 degrees) and less cold during the night than those on the valley floor just a few miles away.  This temperate, consistent climate allows for longer vine photosynthesis each day and enhances the amount of flavor compounds and level of natural acidity in the mature grapes.   This wine has generous aromas of blueberry, boysenberry and black currant accented by  vanilla notes. The same black fruits dominate the mouthfilling flavors, with suggestions of vanilla and toasty oak in the background.  Impressive depth, outstanding balance and integrated tannins combine to give this Cabernet an uncommonly polished texture and graceful, lingering finish. Only 3,000 cases were produced.

  • VALLEY OF THE MOON 2003 Sangiovese, California $16: "The 2003 is the winery's ninth Sangiovese vintage and one of its best, with a delicious, food-friendly style.   Originally from the heart of Italy, Sangiovese loves the California sun, and vineyards in Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Sonoma Valley,   all sited on hillsides or upland benches, where thin, rocky soils limit production and concentrate character. To make extra certain its Sangiovese grapes achieve intense fruit at maturity, Valley of the Moon insists all three vineyards be carefully pruned to severely limit the number of grape clusters on each vine.  The benefits are clear in this Sangiovese's bold character and fresh acidity.  Fresh, forward aromas of ripe strawberry and raspberry  with generous black fruit, rhubarb, cinnamon and mint flavors are seamlessly integrated in the medium-bodied palate.  Rich yet elegant mouthfeel, a touch of tannins to enhance overall structure, leads to a bright, light finish."

COASTAL RIDGE is part of the BRONCO Wine Company, owned by the Franzia family which has been in  the wine business for more than 100 years.   BRONCO has no relationship with Franzia boxed wines.

  • COASTAL RIDGE 2004 Chardonnay, California $7: "Flavors of pear, honey and pineapple along with a zesty finish, serve with appetizers, chicken and fish dishes."
  • COASTAL RIDGE 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, California $7: "Aromas and flavors of black cherry, anise, vanilla, plum and hint of cedar, pair with grilled steaks and lamb."

  • BEAULIEU VINEYARD 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $18: "After de-stemming and gentle crushing, fermentation lasted 10 days at 80 degrees with juice pumped over two to three times a day for proper extraction of tannin and flavor.  There was 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel.   The wine highlights black raspberry, currant, hints of chocolate and dried herbs, a medium-full body texture framed by fine, firm tannins, enjoy with grilled steaks, lamb and sharp cheeses."
  • BEAULIEU VINEYARD 2003  Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $25: "Grapes were crushed gently in open-top stainless steel fermentors with juice pumped over two to three times a day.  After pressing, wine ages in small cooperage with minimal racking to preserve fruit character.
  • BEAULIEU VINEYARD 2003 Napa Valley Merlot $18: "After careful hand harvesting, the fruit underwent a maceration regime that started out with aggressive, frequent pumpovers, tapered off to a gentler extraction and after barrel aging the wine was cold stabilized.  Our wine exhibits a rich bouquet of dark cherries, licorice and subtle cinnamon and vanillin oak.  Medium- bodied texture and lush flavors are framed by supple tannins, adding a pleasing freshness in the finish, pair with marinated pork tenderloin, semi-hard cheeses."

COSENTINO Winery celebrates its 25th years with three new releases.   Cosentino Winery produces more than 30 award-winning wines, hand-crafted from small lots of high quality fruit. Inspired by the artistic approach to winemaking and the natural characteristics of the grapes, Mitch Cosentino lets his palate guide him. The production of each wine varies from year to year, based on the quality and yield of the vintage. “I want the art developing the business,” explains Mitch Cosentino, “not the business creating the art.”   In 1980, Mitch Cosentino began making wine in a small warehouse in Modesto, CA.  Through 25 years of changes, he continues to handcraft quality wines with integrity.  Mitch is executive winemaker of three wineries that produce 40 wines.  Cosentino Winery in Yountville, CE2V Estate Winery in Pope Valley and Crystal Valley Cellars in Lodi make up the Signature Wineries portfolio. Cosentino's career has experienced many milestones.  Crystal Valley Cellars was first to produce a Sacramento County Chardonnay (1982).  COSENTINO Winery was first to label Oakville AVA (1991) and Yountville AVA in 1998, first to use Meritage on label 1986 and the COSENTINO Winery Cabernet Franc was first one served at White House.  With over 1,000 sweepstakes competition medals and 50 Best of Show/Best of Varietal awards, Mitch continues to be celebrated as a winemaker by wine critics and consumers.  Please see www.cosentinowinery.com for the list of awards.

KOBRAND has several new Italian wine releases and three are "Super Tuscan" wines.  The estate of Castello del Terriccio is an extensive, 4,200-acre property located in the Tuscan coastal maremma at Castellina Marittima in the province of Livorno. The original estate dates from at least the mid-1800s, and was originally the property of the Gaetani family of Pisa. In 1921 Terriccio was acquired by the family of the father of the present owner, Dr. Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana Serafini Ferri. Dr. Rossi's father's family, the Rossi di Medelana, were aristocrats from Bologna; his mother's family, the counts Serafini-Ferri from Rome. Control remained in Rossi di Medelana hands until 1974, at which point an uncle of Dr. Rossi assumed management of the estate. Dr. Rossi took over Terriccio in 1994 as sole inheritor and director.

  • CASTELLO DEL TERRICCIO 2001 Lupiciaia, IGT Toscana $140: "Lupicaia, which means 'place of the wolf hunts,' is a vineyard of 12.5 acres planted 90 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 10 percent Merlot. This maritime-influenced part of the estate enjoys the finest microclimate and yields its best grapes.  The grapes are hand-selected with pickers making two passes to choose only the fullest, most  ripe clusters.  The wine's dense, highly extracted cassis and black cherry flavors and aromas are punctuated by distinct notes of cedar, smoke and forest, set in a ripe, firmly focused tannic structure ending in an elegant, sustained finish.
  • CASTELLO DEL TERRICCIO 2001 Tassinaia, IGT Toscana $45: "Tassinaia ('place of the stones') occupies 37.5 acres of sandy, stony soil situated on a south-southwest exposed slope and is planted primarily to cabernet sauvignon and sangiovese with the balance in merlot vines, each variety is represents one-third of the wine.  Hand-harvested grapes undergo severe selection. Tassinaia shows beautiful depth of color with a nose of black fruits and spice.  Ripe, concentrated black and red raspberry fruit flavors are underscored by sweet, spicy oak and leather notes and a firm core of acidity in this wine, which is supported by a pronounced tannic backbone and a finish of finesse and power.
  • CASTELLO DEL TERRICCIO 2004 Con Vento, IGT Toscana $33: "Con Vento, Terriccio's second white wine, is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  All hand-harvested grapes have pickers make two passes through the vineyards to select the most perfectly ripened clusters to ferment in the most technically advanced temperature-controlled stainless steel fermenters.  This bright, vibrant expression of Sauvignon Blanc is highly aromatic, with a clean, crisp, citrus and gooseberry fragrance typical of the varietal which carries onto an explosively fruity palate. The acidic balance is fresh and bracing, sustaining the long, ripe citrus finish.
  • TENUTA SETTE PONTI 2003 Crognolo, IGT Rosso Toscana $35: "The Sette Ponti (seven bridges) estate lies in the heart of Chianti.  Sette Ponti refers to the seven bridges across the Arno River on the road from Arezzo to Florence. The first one, Ponte Buriano, was erected in the mid 13th century and is perceptible in the background of Leonardo DaVinci's Mona Lisa. Tenuta Sette Ponti, the Tuscan family estate of Dr. Antionio Moretti, is a 750-acre property that supports livestock and mixed agriculture, and although viticulture is not new to the estate, winemaking is; grapes were sold until 1997 to various respected Tuscan wine producers.   The blend of Sangiovese (90%) and Merlot from vines of an average age of 25 to 35 years yields a refined, elegantly stylish wine of fruit forward lushness.   The dense color suggests a concentration confirmed on the palate with  ripe wild cherries, black fruit, leather and vanilla.  Firmly structured yet elegant, with good tannic support and well-integrated oak notes, the overall impression is of harmony, balance and harmony.
  • AZIENDA AGRICOLA Le FORNACE  2003 SAIA, Feudo Maccari Estate, IGT Noto, Sicily,  $33: "This estate is Dr. Moretti's second one.   The vineyard was planted to grillo, insolia and nero d'avola varietals of the region.  Insolia was uprooted and replaces with cabernet sauvignon, syrah and cataratto.  Feudo Maccicari lies about one mile from the sea at 240 feet above sea level.   SAIA is deep violet with aromas of dark red cherry, spearmint, spice and oak with a lush velvety palate of concentrated fruit balanced by fine acidic underpinning and ripe sweet tannins."
  • AZIENDA AGRICOLA Le FORNACE 2003 POGGIO al LUPO IGT Maremma, Tuscany $55: "Dr. Moretti purchased Azienda Agricola Le Fornace in the Maremma on Tuscany’s southern coast in 1999. The property, renamed Azienda Agricola Poggio al Lupo, (Hill of the Wolf)  covers 115 acres.  >From the estate’s original cabernet sauvignon, alicante and sangiovese plantings, established, total area under vine has been increased to 37 acres.  Of this, 40% is in sangiovese, 35% in cabernet sauvignon, 15% in alicante and the remainder in petit verdot. Many microclimatics have moderating influences of Mediterranean breezes, with a warm, consistent, exceptionally luminous climate.   sufficient rainfall and in the more humid months sea winds to aerate the clusters.   Poggio al Lupo is deep purple suggesting its considerable intensity and extraction. The  aromas deliver jammy black berry fruit and cassis impressions with notes of balsam wood and cedar and a silk palate, long finish."
  • CABREO 2003 La Pietra Chardonnay, Toscana IGT $na: "The result of research and experimentation with the Chardonnay vine, Cabreo La Pietra was conceived of as an IGT, or "Indicazione Geografica Tipica," wine in order to express the innovation of contemporary Tuscan winemaking and to exploit Tuscany's potential to produce excellent quality wines. • CABREO 2001 Il Borgo, Red wine, Toscana IGT $na: "First released in 1985 as an IGT, Cabreo Il Borgo shows a brilliant, ruby color and rich, dense aromas of wild cherry and black currant offset by notes of leather, herbs and vanilla. On the palate, it shows a superb balance of fruit ripeness underscored by a fresh acidity and structure of medium body, with an overall impression of delicate complexity. These are repeated in the clean, persistent finish, which ends on a subtle toasty note."
  • NOZZOLE 2001 La Forra Chianti Classico Riserva, Greve DOCG $na: "Hand-harvested grapes are fermented on the skins by natural yeasts in stainless steel tanks over seven days at 21 to 27 C (70 to 80 F); maceration period of 15 days follows before pressing.  The wine is racked into clean stainless steel and brought to 22 C (72 F) to naturally induce a full malolactic fermentation.  Following four to six months in French barriques of two to three years' use, the wine is racked into large Slavonian oak vats of 4,000 to 7,000 litres' capacity for 24 to 30 months.  A light egg-white fining precedes bottling. Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva La Forra is a wine of impressive concentration and depth, with an intense, aromatic fragrance of black fruit, leather and woodsy notes. The wine is racked into clean stainless steel tanks for a natural malolactic fermentation.  It spends two years in large Slavonian oak vats of 4,000 to 7,000 litres, with one racking in April.  A light egg-white fining precedes bottling, with release one year thereafter.  Nozzole Chianti shows the Sangiovese fragrance of dark berries with leather and earth, confirmed on the palate in a full, mellow texture and firm structure and a clean acidic balance.  Ripe fruit in the aftertaste has elegant nuances of smoke and mushrooms, and a long, full finish promising excellent longevity. "
  • SPALLETTI 2004 Chianti DOCG $na: "Spalletti is a traditional, classically styled Chianti that expresses quality, consistency and value.   Woodsy Sangiovese aromas of earth and leather are repeated on the palate and integrated with clean, supple, ripe berry fruit with a medium-bodied structure, a fine acidic balance and persistent and fresh finish."

CELLAR NO. 8 has released its latest Zinfandel.  Winemaker Paul Rydquist tells me "If there has ever been a wine friendlier than classic California Zinfandel, I have yet to be introduced to it.  Frankly, I love Zinfandel."   His latest is the 2003 CELLAR No. 8 Zinfandel for $10.  He says it captures all of the essential elements--jammy up-front fruit, blackberry pie, touch of briar patch and spice and perfect with  pizza, a hamburger or spaghetti dinner at home.

RAYMOND VINEYARDS & CELLAR is pleased to introduce the R Collection with three new bottles of wine. "We're very proud of the wines and have put a great deal of thought and effort in the development of this brand," Roy Raymond tells me.  "To showcase a definite distinction between Raymond Napa Valley Reserve wines and the Raymond Estates products, we're replacing the Raymond Estates label with the R Collection.  The change will clearly establish Raymond Napa Valley Reserve wines as the flagship for Raymond.  Our winery's reputation is built on these wines and they clearly set the standard for quality and excellence.  At the same time, we want to offer a line of wines that's more affordable for everyday.  R Collection is the answer--well-made, high quality and priced to compete in today's highly competitive market."   RAYMOND VINEYARDS & CELLAR has also released its prestigious 2002 GENERATIONSThis limited production epitomizes the Raymond family's five generations of dedication to winemaking in Napa Valley.  The grapes come from the estate vineyard and other selected vineyards and blending is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon among selected blocks.  The wine was aged 25 months in new Nevers French oak barrels and received a full year of bottle aging prior to release.  I hope you are one of the lucky few to purchase a bottle ($75).

  • R Collection 2004 Chardonnay, Monterey $13: "This wine is from Raymond's estate vineyards in Monterey, where the land is devoted to Chardonnay that benefits from the strong marine influence of cool breezes, foggy nights and warm afternoons.  To preserve the natural intensity of the Chardonnay, the wine is lightly oaked and no malaolactic fermentation is used.  It has green apple, lemon-lime, orange blossoms, poached pears, pineapple, apricots and is crisp and rounded with lively acidity."
  • R Collection 2003 Merlot, California $14: "One-third of the grapes are from Napa and the balance from the base of the Sierra foothills.  It is aged in older barrels to emphasize the natural merlot fruit character.  It's a big, fruit forward, well-structured wine, full of black fruits, blackberry and dark cherry with nutmeg, hickory smoke and dried herbs.  It's mouth filling of fruits and spices, black pepper and toasted oak--well structured, balancing soft tannins and lush ripe fruit.".
  • R Collection 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $19: "Many grapes for this wine come from Raymond's estate vineyards in Rutherford and are selected for their lighter, fruitier character and soft, supple tannins; 75% is aged 16 months in French oak barrels to add complexity and the balance in American oak to add vanilla and spice.  It has aromas and flavors of ripe plums, cherry cobbler, star anise and cinnamon, blackberries, blueberries and cassis, spiced coffee cake and sweet earth with pleasant tannins, good structure and silky texture."

SHAFER 2003 “Last Chance” FIREBREAK®, Napa Valley $42 will be the final bottling of this Sangiovese wine.  With Doug Shafer's 2003 FIREBREAK he bids farewell to Sangiovese. Winemaker's Notes: Our final release of Firebreak may force fans of this wine into a tough choice: drink now or hold. The appealing, forward aromas and flavors of cherry, cranberry and strawberry make it an enjoy-now proposition, while the masculine tannins of this great vintage make it a good one for aging and savoring as a more mature wine down the road."

  • SHAFER 2003 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $55: Doug Shafer tells me that his northern foothills vineyards have grown a mouthful.  "To create the ultimate snapshot of a vintage Shafer selects top-quality fruit from small, carefully-tended vineyards most of which are located from Stags Leap District south, along the base of the Vaca Mountain range.  This narrow band of terrain offers the right blend of heat and coolness to create a balance of ripeness and acidity.  We find significant differences from site to site, which we blend to create a wine that offers the best the vintage has to offer. This release offers solid layers of dark, juicy Cabernet fruit, classic blackberry and cherry, plus herbs, cedar, and black pepper spread over a sweet, jazzy core. American oak adds spice, vanilla, char and coconut."

KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2005 Sonoma County Gewürztraminer $11, "arguably the most distinctive California white wine, also may be the least appreciated.  People who know Gewürztraminer love it, but sadly, they comprise a small number, which explains why few California wineries make it.    Fortunately, KENWOOD gives this original the care it deserves and the 2005 Gewürztraminer is a charmer that should attract additional fans.    Gewürztraminer originally developed as a clone of Traminer in the cold vineyards of Alsace.  To gain the full fruit, spice and fresh acidity that characterize it best, Kenwood sources grapes from the coldest corner of Russian River Valley.  A delicate variety, it has aromas of honeysuckle, Bartlett pear, lychee and ginger and generous, yet nimble flavors on the palate of  peach, honeysuckle and lime.  Subtle sweetness balances acidity for a crisp finish.  Only 550 cases so selected markets.

  • KENWOOD VINEYARDS 2005 Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma $13: "Sometimes, more than one great appellation is needed to make a great wine. The right mix of grapes from vineyards in different regions can create a wine with fruit complexity that no single region can equal. Kenwood's 2005 Sonoma County Sauvignon Blanc illustrates this synergy perfectly – a blend of grapes from five Sonoma County appellations, it shows how delicious this white wine can be.  Carneros and the Russian River Valley, Sonoma County’s coolest appellations, produce Sauvignon Blanc with grass, herb and citrus character, as well as lean, crisp texture. In contrast, warmer, sunnier inland Sonoma County appellations – Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley and upper Sonoma Valley – help Sauvignon Blanc develop honeydew melon and pear character, plus a soft, lush texture."

BERNARDUS winery is a lovely destination for wine, food and hospitality.  The Marinus Vineyard in upper Carmel Valley is planted with a blend of traditional Bordeaux varieties in separate blocks.  Theses areas were identified as having distinct terroirs.  Different planting and growing strategies are used with each block to develop components for blending in the final Marinus wine.  The 2002 growing season was warm and sunny, but without heat spikes.  Vintners selected picking days on perfect ripeness levels.  This season enabled the grapes to fully ripen with round tannins and moderate alcohol levels.  Grapes were destemmed prior to fermentation.   Pumping over occurred two to three times a day.  After completing malolactic fermentation the new wine was transferred to small French oak barrels (50% new)  for sixteen months aging.  Complexity and balance are enhanced by multiple lots from different vineyard blocks.  The BERNADUS 2002 Marinus $48 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec.

  • BERNARDUS 2004 Chardonnay, Carmel Valley $20: "Harvest occurred under very warm and sunny conditions that provided ripe grapes with a bright,  natural acidity from the ocean's cool evening breezes.  The wine is redolent with complex aromas of caramel, creme brulee, ripe pear and pineapple, a lush texture, well focused with a crisp acidity and an elegant finish."

DUTTON-GOLDFIELD has released two lovely wines.  These producers consistently offer fine, skillfully made wines for the best of drinking pleasure.

  • DUTTON-GOLDFIELD 2004 Dutton Ranch Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $35: "This release is our 7th and we've added a new vineyard to the blend--Manzana.   In the heart of Green Valley and at the bottom of Dan Goldfield's driveway, it is planted to Dijon clone 828.  We love the rich color and tannin structure it imparts to the wine.   Destemmed fruit is put in small, open-top fermentors and cold-soaked five day to extract spice and fruit--punchdown is three times a day.   Each vineyard is fermented separately and each lot is pressed and racked into French barrels to age.  Lots are blended in early spring and allowed to marry.   Aromas and flavors of florals, black cherry, chocolate and blueberry, black tea, raspberry and fine-grained tannins.  Enjoy with foie gras, glazed duck, barbecued shrimp, eggplant parmesan and Jarlsberg and Asiago cheeses."
  • DUTTON-GOLDFIELD 2004 Zinfandel, Russian River Valley, $30: "A blend of two vineyards.  The old Feeney Ranch vines are picked late and contribute raspberry fruit and bright acidity and elegance only old vines can provide.  Alper Vineyard shows cherry and bramble character along with lushness. Together they give bright berry fruit, moderate alcohol and a generous structure which is exceptional in the varietal.  Enjoy with almost anything."

GROTH Vineyards & Winery family member Suzanne Groth has become the public relations manager.  In my correspondence to Suzanne I recalled that I met her father shortly after he began selling his wines in Texas.  He did a marvelous presentation that broke down the cost of producing a bottle of wine and explained how little profit there actually was directly for the producer.  It was eye opening and I wrote an article on about Dennis'  presentation and still refer to it in my Symposium on Wine.  Winemaker Michael Weis is another friend of long standing and I'll hope to welcome all of them to feature a tasting in my home.    I  visited the winery one year during the Napa Valley Wine Auction shortly after it was just completed.      I'm delighted to share these wines with my tasters.

  • GROTH Vineyards & Winery 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville, Napa Valley $55 marks the 21st vintage.
  • GROTH Vineyards & Winery 2005 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley $17.50

RODNEY STRONG Vineyards has new releases from Winemaker Rick Sayre.   "Rod Strong was among the first modern wine pioneers with a vision to plant pinot noir in the Russian River Valley (RRV).  In 1968 he planted our heritage River East Vineyard in the alluvial clay-loam soils adjacent to the winery in Healdsburg.   Today RRV is well established as one of the premier pinot noir growing regions in the world, and w continue to rely on the original vineyard as a core contributor to our estate vineyard bottling. www.rodneystrong.com

  • RODNEY STRONG Vineyards 2004 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $19: "Supple in texture, with rose petal and red fruit aromas, this lively medium-bodied wine is aged in predominantly French oak, which adds a subtle vanilla character," Rick reports.
  • RODNEY STRONG Vineyards 2002 Merlot, Sonoma County $19: "Plum and blueberry flavors predominate in this soft, rich, mouth filling Merlot," Rick says.   "While some think merlot is the new kid on the block, we've been growing merlot since the early 1970s when Rod Strong first planted it in Geyserville--the heart of the Alexander Valley.  Today we farm over 100 acres in Alexander Valley and part of RRV.
  • RODNEY STRONG Vineyards 2003 Zinfandel, Knotty Vines Estate Vineyards, Sonoma County $19: "Fresh, bright berry fruit from our heritage RRV vineyard combined with peppery spice from our Dry Creek vineyard and ripe jamminess from our Alexander Valley vineyards."

CHALONE Vineyard 2004 Estate Chardonnay $25 is made entirely from fruit grown at the estate vineyard.  "It is an extremely fine and delicate wine with aromas of stone fruit and brioche.  Ten months sur lie aging in 100% French oak barrels gives texture and imparts complex aromas stone fruits, vanilla and hazelnut.   The acidity is firm and has gobs of mineral qualities from our limestone soils.   I like to call this a white wine for red wine drinkers.  It's rich flavors, distinctiveness and crisp acidity make it versatile to complement many rich dishes."

PASO ROBLES 2006 Grand Tasting event came to Austin's Green Pastures with more than 100 wines from Paso Robles wineries.  We tasted and learned how the diverse soils combined with warm days and cool nights to make Paso Robles the optimal area for producing more than 16 wine varieties.  Wine producers discussed  what makes Paso Robles wines distinctly different and we tasted the differences.  Texas' own Don Brady, formerly at Ste. Genevieve, is winemaker and director at Robert Hall Winery.  And there are many other fine discoveries to be made.  Please see the website www.pasowine.com for winery listings, maps and much more.  This wine country is among the most beautiful in the world.

MICHAEL MARTINI brought his wit and wisdom and good sense of winemaking to Austin and my home during April for my students, friends and tasters.  Mike and I have been friends for two decades and it was wonderful to welcome him back to Texas.  Mike's grandfather, Louis Michael Martini, was born in 1887 on the Italian Riviera, and came to San Francisco to help his father sell wine and fish.  He was sent back to Italy to study winemaking and eventually established the winery and vineyards in Napa and Sonoma.  His son, Louis P. Martini, studied at U.C. Davis and joined the winery after four years in the U.S. Air Force during WWII.

From the time he was a boy, Mike learned about wine at the knees of his relatives.  After school, he worked alongside his father and grandfather and his summer jobs as a teenager were blending wines and tending vines.  Mike joined the Air Force in 1969 and later attended U.C. Davis where he graduated with a degree in fermentation science.   Mike became the winemaker in 1977, celebrating membership in one of Napa Valley's oldest and most beloved Napa Valley wine families.  He continues to do the family proud!  Among the array of excellent wines we tasted, you'll find these current selections in your favorite stores:

  • Louis M. Martini 2002 Monte Rosso Cabernet sauvignon $85
  • Louis M. Martini 2003 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $35
  • Louis M. Martini 2002 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $25
  • Louis M. Martini 2003 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon $15
  • Louis M. Martini 2003 Gnarly Vine Zinfandel $35
