WINERY OF THE MONTH: J. LOHR WINERY
J.LOHR wines have
been well-made wines for decades. Jerry Lohr was one of a
handful of pioneers in the Central Coast who stayed convinced of the
land's worth until his wines proved he was right. Today J. LOHR
VINEYARDS and WINES is well known for it highly successful Estates
Series. However, J. Lohr also offers a Vineyard Series and a
Cuvée Series.
In the late 1960’s,
Jerry Lohr investigated grape growing regions throughout California.
His farming background helped him understand and respect the
importance of soil quality, climate and location. This
knowledge brought him to California’s Central Coast region and in
the early 1970s he planted 280 acres of wine grapes in the Arroyo
Seco appellation of Monterey County, and in 1974 completed his winery
in San Jose. Additional land purchases brought total acreage to
2,000, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and other red varietals
and an adjacent winery and barrel facility was built.
Vineyard expansion (1988) in the Arroyo Seco now includes 900 acres
of Chardonnay and other cool climate varietals such as Riesling,
Pinot Blanc, and Valdiguié.
J. Lohr wines compete with the finest in the world, using a style
that focuses on flavor and complexity through vineyard selection,
technology and innovation. Jerry Lohr offers three tiers of wines
produced from estate vineyards – J. Lohr Cuvée Series, J.
Lohr Vineyard Series and J. Lohr Estates. In addition J.Lohr
has three tiers that meet everyday and entry-level wine consumption
needs - Crosspoint Vineyards, Cypress and Painter Bridge.
J. Lohr Cuvée Series -
limited production produced only during extraordinary vintages.
Cuvée PAU blends at least 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot,
Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Malbec. Cuvée St. E is
produced from over 50% Cabernet Franc the remainder comprised of
Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot. Cuvée POM
blends 50% Merlot with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite
Verdot. Each of these wines competes with the most expensive
wines produced in Bordeaux and California. We have positioned the
Cuvée Series as our "artistic expression of flavor".
J. Lohr Vineyard Series - limited production and with
utmost quality, the Vineyard Series is J. Lohr Winery’s entrée
into the luxury wine category. The Arroyo Vista Vineyard in the
Arroyo Seco A.V.A. of Monterey County produces the most
intensely scented, complex Chardonnay. The Hilltop
Cabernet, on
the highest, best-drained slope in the Paso Robles holdings, produces
the most potent, darkly colored fruit and a wine of power and
great style. Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc is grown
just north of the town of St. Helena in the heart of the Napa Valley
– home of the finest Sauvignon Blancs in the country.
J. Lohr Estates - a line of
extraordinary quality, estate-produced varietals from Monterey County
and Paso Robles. All aspects are controlled from viticulture to
bottling to ensure “flavor second to none.” J. Lohr Estates
includes the Riverstone Chardonnay, Seven Oaks Cabernet
Sauvignon, South Ridge Syrah, Bay Mist White Riesling, Wildflower
Valdiguié, Los Osos Merlot and Bramblewood Zinfandel.
J. Lohr Cuvée: The Artistic
Expression of Flavor -- J. Lohr Cuvée designated wines are
produced in extremely small quantities, and represent an artistic
approach to winemaking using similar blending philosophies practiced
by the Grand Cru Chateaux from Pauillac, St. Emilion and Pomerol. Our
Cuvée PAU is a blend of at least 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with
the balance made of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and
Malbec. Cuvée St. E is produced from over 50% Cabernet
Franc, with the remainder comprised of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and
Petite Verdot. Cuvée POM is over 50% Merlot
blended with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Verdot.
Each wine competes with the most expensive wines produced in Bordeaux
and California.
J. LOHR 1999 Cuvée POM is "dark ruby with terroir-based aromas of blueberry and boysenberry fruit, coffee and tar, combined with a complex roasted hazelnut, vanilla bouquet from barrel aging. It simulates the complexity and elegance of Pomerol's Premier Grand Cru Classé wines, showing finesse and seamless elegance on the palate. 1999 will be remembered as one of the most exceptional red wine vintages in California. The La Niña growing season provided a most even and moderate temperature vintage, rivaling the great year of 1985. Merlot, earliest Bordeaux variety to ripen, produced a small crop of some of the most concentrated and heavily pigmented red Bordeaux grapes ever seen in Paso Robles."
J. LOHR 1999 Cuvée PAU "blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Dark red purple, the terroir-based aromas of violets, ripe black cherries and currants, dried flowers and bread dough combine with roasted coffee and perfumy vanilla bouquet from barrel aging, simulating the complexity and elegance of Premier Grand Cru Classé wines from Pauillac. A rustic wine, it has finesse and seamless elegance on the palate – a result of the careful blending of different Bordeaux varieties without the restraints of varietal percentages."
J. LOHR 1999 Cuvée St.E "dark reddish purple, blends Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and has terroir-based aromas of raspberry, blueberry, dried fruits combined with complex toasty vanilla. It simulates the complexity and elegance found in the Premier Grand Cru Classé wines from St. Emilion--integrated and refined, a result of judicious Bordeaux varietal blending."
J.
LOHR 1999 Hilltop Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles $32:
"Dark, youthful, purple-red in color, powerful aromas of
black cherry, raspberry, blueberry and violet with a bouquet of
vanilla, tar and smoky oak. The wine delivers structure and power,
will age 10 to 15 years, but has suppleness, texture and balance to
enjoy today."
J.
LOHR 2002 Sauvignon Blanc, Carol's Vineyard, Napa Valley $18:
"The 2002 vintage of Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc
represents the second release from this distinctive site. From the
growing to the winemaking, preservation of the delicate Sauvignon
Blanc fruit character is the primary goal. Brassy, straw yellow in
color with racy aromas of grapefruit, citrus rind, honeydew melon
and gooseberry, a vibrant acidity and fresh flavors on the palate
make Carol’s Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc an excellent accompaniment
to grilled seafood or poultry. Serve at 45 to 50 degrees."
J. LOHR 2001Chardonnay, Arroyo Vista, Arroyo Seco $25: "The Burgundian winemaking techniques used in our 2001 Arroyo Vista Chardonnay, including alcoholic and malo-lactic fermentation in barrel with lees stirring and extended aging, amplify an already intensely viscous wine, generated from very low yields and a long and cool growing season. The complex and delicate aromas of peach and nectarine, lime zest, and white blossoms with vanilla and smoky toast from the barrel fermentation are complemented by an almost sweet, concentrated viscous texture that is balanced by the ample acidity for a palate freshening finish."
J. LOHR 2001 Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon, Paso Robles $15: "Youthful hues of ruby red, the wine has aromas of black currant, cherry and violets. Bouquet is blend of spices, cedar, clove, cinnamon, mocha, cigar box and tar. Ripe and ample tannins with a plump, concentrated structure supported by good acidity with flavors of black currants, cedar, clove charred oak, pair with grilled or roasted red meats."
J. LOHR 2001 South Ridge Syrah, Paso Robles $15: "Ebullient aromas of brambly red jammy fruits like boysenberries, blackberries, cherries and raspberries with licorice and orange peel. Flavors explode, driven by fruit with bacon and anise, pair with hearty pastas, roast turkey and grilled meats."

NEW RELEASES (quotes are winemakers' comments)
JOSEPH PHELPS vineyards and
home vineyards are in Spring Valley near St. Helena, on a 600-acre
ranch characterized by rolling hills, California native oaks, and 160
acres of meticulously tended vines. It was founded in 1972.
The first Phelps wine, 1973 Johannisberg Riesling, was introduced
in the fall of 1974. Since then, production has grown to
100,000 cases annually, with Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay,
Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot serving as the winery's core varietals.
The Phelps portfolio — in years when weather conditions permit —
produces luscious dessert wines made from Scheurebe and
Semillon.
Long known for his innovative spirit and passion for
quality, Joe Phelps pioneered a number of 'firsts' in the early years
of the winery. The 1974 Insignia — released in the spring of
1978 — was the first Bordeaux-style blend produced in California
under a proprietary label. The release of the 1974 Syrah
in 1977
sparked industry-wide interest in a remarkable French varietal whose
plantings in California had disappeared and been virtually forgotten
for over half a century. And in 1990, after years of research, a
whole new family of Rhone-style wines was introduced under the Vin du
Mistral label and included Syrah, Viognier, Grenache Rosé, and
a delicious red wine blend called Le Mistral.
JOSEPH PHELPS 2002 Viognier, Napa $30: "Grapes were harvested at an average 24.0º Brix. One portion was barrel fermented and aged in two- to three-year-old French Oak barrels, and the other in stainless steel. The best individual lots were selected for the final blend. This year’s Viognier is a full-bodied wine with lovely notes of honeysuckle and lime, and a richness on the palate that creates a long, oily texture."
JOSEPH PHELPS 2000 Backus Vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa $150: "From a 540-foot elevated mesa, which declines steeply to the valley floor, the 45-acre Backus Vineyard sits in the heart of the Oakville District. Picturesque and dramatic, the top of the vineyard is strewn with ancient Andesite boulders and cobbles which line the stream bed and contrast dramatically with the iron rich, brick red soil and meticulously tended vines which slope downward to the Silverado Trail. Phelps produced its first Backus Cabernet in 1977 from the original 6.75 acre block planted on St. George rootstock in 1975. Further vineyard expansion occurred after purchasing the entire 45-acre parcel from the Backus family in 1996, and today a total of 21 acres are planted to vines. No expense was spared in the planting process, and the challenge was formidable. On one particular slope, erosion control measures demanded that all labor be done by hand. Shovels and picks were the only tools. When stumps and rocks were encountered, vines were planted around them. Today, Backus has earned its place among the Grand Cru vineyards of the world, and that the current release reflects this with its chocolate, berry and mineral-like flavors, soft tannins and silky, fat mouthfeel.
JOSEPH PHELPS 2000 Syrah, Napa $40: "Grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks, aged 20 months in two-to-three-year-old French oak barrels, and new French oak (30%). A long, slow growing season permitted near-ideal ripening of the grapes until mid-October, when a cooling trend slowed development of the maturing fruit. Rainstorms further delayed harvest, and extra selective picking was required for grapes. The majority of our Syrah came in prior to the storms. The wine is medium-bodied with floral, white pepper nose, concentrated plum and black cherry flavors, and a rich, lingering finish.
JOSEPH PHELPS 2001 Ovation Chardonnay, Carneros Napa $44: "Grapes were fermented and held on the lees for 9 months before aging in 60-gallon French oak barrels for 14 months (30% new oak, 20% one year old oak and 50% 2-3 year old oak). 2001 growing season was a roller-coaster year of temperature fluctuations, beginning with a warm spring, proceeding to a mild summer and concluding with a heat spell that registered 100-plus degrees for the first seven days of October. While these conditions stressed the vines, reduced crop yields and required selective picking in the vineyard, the end result was a rich, concentrated wine, aromas and flavors of pear, hazelnut and brioche, and an elegant, well-seamed finish.
JOSEPH PHELPS 2000 Insignia, Napa
$150: "With
the exception of a short-lived heat wave between June 12th and 14th,
Napa Valley experienced mild summer temperatures in 2000 which
permitted slow, steady ripening of the fruit. Rains forecast
between August 30th and
September 2nd caused some concern, but
the light showers that did occur were of little consequence and in
fact contributed to flavor development, especially in red
varieties. However, the cool nights and wet soil conditions
that persisted throughout October slowed maturation, and a series of
rainstorms beginning October 25th further affected fruit quality.
Fortunately, grapes for our Insignia blend were picked prior to the
storms, and the resulting wine exhibits concentrated aromas of black
fruit, cinnamon, spice, tobacco and graphite. Supple tannins with
hints of cassis and spice finish long and rich on the palate.
Grapes were harvested at an average 24.6° Brix, fermented in
stainless steel tanks, then aged 26 months in new French oak barrels
before being bottled in February, 2003.

ST. SUPERY CEO Michaela Rodeno says their style for eleven years was distinctly un-Merlot'ish. "The wine had plenty of structure--perhaps because the Dollarhide fruit and a generous contribution of cabernet sauvignon--and was a rather muscular Merlot instead of the soft, easy wine that most expect," she said. Now, however, Winemaker Michael Beaulac, has changed the style to suit his preference for a rounder, softer, more approachable wine with juicy cherry-berry character. ST. SUPERY 2000 Napa Valley Merlot ($22) is the first vintage bearing his mark."

JARVIS (please see full story below) is an extraordinary place. I visited the winery some years ago, and even though I've visited hundreds of wineries through the years, it is truly unique. The Jarvis winemaking facility is totally contained within 45,000 square feet of cave tunneled into the Vacas Mountains. It is four miles east of the town of Napa. Visually and technically, it is a masterpiece. Many of the finest wines come from caves due to the invariable temperature and high humidity levels natural to caves. Typically, caves are used to age wine in barrels, since they're just not big enough for other winery operations, particularly the fermentation tanks. Tunneling techniques, however, have advanced in the past 30 years so that William Jarvis and his associates could build the large underground winery. As the cave extends farther into the mountain, chambers become larger, so that the last one could contain a basketball court. Even the big fermentation tanks are underground, preserving the natural beauty of the outside environment. Capitalizing on the natural underground water, the stream and waterfall running through the center of the winery maintain an ideal humidity level for the barrel-aging wines. www.jarviswines.com All the wines are made from 100% Jarvis estate grapes.
JARVIS 2000 Chardonnay, Jarvis Estate, Napa $38 (1,440 cases): Winemaker Dimitri Tchelistcheff considered 2000 an excellent Chardonnay harvest. "It had optimum brix to acid balance," he says. "The mountain grapes and cool San Francisco breezes allowed the grapes to ripen to perfection and offer intense varietal fruit flavors."
JARVIS 2000 Cabernet Franc, Jarvis Estate, Napa $50 (545 cases): This limited production wine is much sought after and Dimitri believes it is one of his best wines. "Eighteen months of barrel aging in new French Nevers oak adds a hint of toasty vanilla to the lush ripe fruit and together with the wine's spicy blueberry and black cherry the flavors linger elegantly," he says. "It has incredible structure."
JARVIS 2000 Merlot, Jarvis Estate, Napa (648 cases) $46: "The wine is a blend of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and the aroma is rich, dark fruits and violets with a touch of toasty vanilla, intense plum, spicy cherry and chocolate flavors."
JARVIS 1999 Lake William, Jarvis Estate, Napa (1,495 cases) $58: "The wine is comprised of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot and underwent 100% malolactic. The proprietary blend--a combination of rich cassis and elegant berry flavors--is named for the lake that borders and cools the estate vineyards. It has charming freshness."
JARVIS 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa (4, 795 cases) $75: The 1999 harvest season was cool and kept us waiting until mid October to begin picking our cabernet sauvignon grapes," Dimitri says. "Incredible intensity resulted and this wine shows the depth ad concentration of those grapes. It spent 24 months in new French oak barrels. The wine is velvet on the palate."

JADE MOUNTAIN 2001 La Provencale, California $15 is a blend of traditional southern Rhone varietals and pays tribute to the easy drinking wines of the South of France. Mourvedre, the foundation of the wine, comes from centuries-old vines that are dry-farmed on sand to reach an unusual level of concentration, balance and ripeness. The Mourvedre is blended with three mountain-grown grape varietals: Grenache, Syrah and a touch of Viognier--to boost the bouquet and integrate the tannins. Enjoy with bistro-type foods, polentas, risottos, ham and ribs.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
CANOE RIDGE 2001 Merlot, Columbia Valley $20: " . . . displays elegant, classic Merlot flavors--raspberry and rich cocoa-chocolate aromas and flavors plus a smooth mouthfeel make it good with grilled meats and vegetables like lamb with rosemary, richly flavored fish like grilled swordfish with garlic potatoes and a ripe Brie.

KENWOOD Artist's Series marked its 25th anniversary with the 1999 Artist Series Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon--the product of a sensational vintage--with the label art by Rolph Scarlett. The advent of the series in 1975 had a simple premise: handcraft the finest Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon possible and bottle each vintage with a unique label of fine art. Grapes for the 1999 wine were selected from the Lindholm and Montecillo Vineyards high in the Mayacamas Mountains. Their thin, rocky soils and western exposure are ideal for producing small crops of intensely flavored cabernet grapes. Deep color and opulent aromas of blackberry and black cherry with mint and cedar notes, lead to a mouth-filling, harmonious wine with fine-grained tannins and a firm structure. Get two bottles--one for now and one to cellar.

STAG'S LEAP WINE CELLARS has released two wines. The 2000 bottling of Merlot was about 20% smaller that the previous vintage since the some of the fruit failed to meet the demanding standards. From Arcadia Vineyards, the 2001 Chardonnay continues to present a new defining style. Both wines deserve attention and will reward it. There's a goddess named ARTEMIS in your glass, something new from estate and non-estate blending.
STAG'S LEAP WINE CELLARS 2001 ARTEMIS , Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon $45: "Stag's Leap introduces this new vision for its Napa Valley Cabernet, named for the Greek goddess of the hunt. Artemis targets a higher goal for the winery's traditionally non-estate Cabernet by including 30% of its estate-grown grapes in the blend. The wine's richness of perfume and structure show the higher percentage of grapes from FAY vineyard. A nose of violets, raspberries, rosemary and truffle with a core of black plum. More black fruit on the palate, with black cherry and a touch of cassis and delicate vanilla. Firm tannins carry through to a balanced, spicy finish. Pair with prime rib, turkey, swordfish and white truffle risotto."
STAG'S LEAP WINE CELLARS 2000 Merlot, Napa Valley $40: "It welcomes with aromas of warm black cherries, vanilla bean, dried sage and rosemary and swirling gives hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and flowers. Taste the flavors of cranberry, hints of mocha in a medium bodied with good traction and weight across the midi-palate. The wine recedes in a lingering finish of dried red cherries, pair with squab in a mushroom pan reduction sauce, ripe Brie, nuts and apples with crusty bread."
STAG'S LEAP WINE CELLARS 2001 ARCADIA VINEYARD Chardonnay, Napa Valley $45: "This fourth bottling of ARCADIA VINEYARD continues to win praise for defining the new style of California Chardonnay. We avoid heavy-handed winemaking--using malolactic and third and fourth year oak--to express varietal character and terroir in the glass. Aromas of jasmine tea and kefir lime and flavors are Meyer lemon, vanilla biscuit and kumquat in a light, clean texture, hint of creaminess with a bright crisp finish. Pair with shrimp ravioli in cream sauce or baked goat cheese."
___________________________________________________________________________________________
ZACA MESA has a long history of producing Rhone-style wines. "In 1978, long before most wineries thought of growing Syrah, Zaca Mesa dedicated a section of the estate vineyard to this grape. Nicknamed the Black Bear Block, it is now the oldest Syrah block on the Central Coast," says Director of Marketing Amoreena Bremgartner. Now there's a new label that gives a visual reminder of our commitment to quality." Over the years the estate vineyard has excelled in growing Rhone varietals, and recently each of the 247-acres has been reviewed for replanting to a possibly better-suited varietal. You'll enjoy these wines.
ZACA MESA 2001 Syrah $20
ZACA MESA 2000 Black Bear Block Syrah $45
ZACA MESA 2000 "Z" Cuvee $18
ZACA MESA 2002 Viognier $13

NAPA RIDGE WINERY 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon $10, a complex wine combining many flavors and layers--black cherry, juniper and cassis with a lively finish that includes flavors of smoke and vanilla, textures of silky tannins.
NAPA RIDGE WINERY 2002 Zinfandel $10, Lodi Zins receive accolades for good reasons. This one has notes of currants, plum and black cherries, flavors mingling vanilla spice and hints of black pepper with soft tannins.

BECKMAN VINEYARDS 2002 Purisima Mountain Vineyard Marsanne, 650 cases, 100% Marsanne $16; "Intriguing floral nose suggests white flowers, peach aromas and honey suckle. Mouth is rich with more honey, peach, mineral and almond flavors combined with spiciness. Medium body, balanced acidity with a long clean finish, pair with spicy meals, seafood or to sip alone."
BECKMAN VINEYARDS 2001 Estate Grenache, 950 cases, 100% Grenache $22: "Jammy raspberry, molasses and nutmeg nose with violets and lavender. A massive barrage of strawberry and raspberry jam is followed by a well-rounded core of juicy pomegranate, long finish, soft tannins, serve with roasted game, lamb stews or favorite red-sauce pasta."

GRGICH HILLS principals Ivo Jeramaz (Mike's nephew) and Mike Grgich decided to plant 25 acres of merlot grapes for blending purposes, but they soon realized that it was worthy of a limited bottling in its own right. 1999 was the first vintage. This is the second release of this highly acclaimed Merlot. This medium-to-full bodied wine is a dark ruby color with warm spicy aromas of cedar, red berries and nutmeg. It's smooth, ripe flavors are of cherries and plums with nuances of herbs and chocolate, a touch vanilla, moderate tannins and good acidity with velvet texture and lingering aftertaste. Serve GRGICH HILLS 2000 Merlot, Napa Valley $38 with grilled steak, roast loin of pork, lamb, eggplant parmesan and wild mushroom risotto."
GRGICH HILLS 2001 Chardonnay, Napa Valley $33: "An excellent Chardonnay vintage, a cool summer helped high acidity grapes give elegant, balanced wines. Aromas of citrus, apple, honey, and pear along with a touch of mineral, toasty vanilla oak and caramel. Flavors are crisp and complex, showing grapefruit, lemon, pineapple and pear with some nuttiness. Its long creamy finish retains a natural acidity. Serve with poultry, seafood, cream sauces, pasta, and a variety of cheeses."

ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS has released new wines. The 2002 Estate 100%, malolactic Chardonnay has 70% stainless steel fermented wine and 30% fermented and aged nine months in oak barrels (25% new). The 2001 Two Barrel blend is composed of 70% Syrah and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and was aged 14 months in 25% new 60-gallon French and American oak barrels.
ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS 2002 Estate Chardonnay, Alexander Valley $15: "Flavorful and complex, it has aromas of mandarin orange, pineapple and hint lemon combined with rich apple and pear flavors, finishing with great flavor and length."
ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS 2001 Wetzel Family Estate Merlot, Alexander Valley $20: "Fruit from nine vineyard blocks was vinified and treated differently. It has a hefty core of fruit, black an red, followed by integrated acid balance and velvety tannins, great depth and length."
ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS 2001 Two Barrel $19: "Syrah lends aromas of blueberry, violets and earth to this well-structured blend. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes black cherry and cassis to the mid palate, soft tannins and flavors of plum, oak and chocolate round out the finish."
ALEXANDER VALLEY VINEYARDS 2003 New Gewurz $9: "heady aroma of rose, ginger, grapefruit, litchi nuts and nutmeg with fresh floral, brown spice and citrus flavors, crisp finish"

MOON MOUNTAIN VINEYARD, once Carmenet Moon Mountain, has released two wines. MOON MOUNTAIN VINEYARD 2002 Reserve Sauvignon Blanc (75%) Semillon (25%), Edna Valley $16 comes from the Paragon Vineyard and fermented in oak. Two clones produce aromas of citrus, melon, mineral and herbs. Semillon fills out the mouthfeel by softening the acidity and contributes ripe fig and honey aromas. Crisp and refreshing, the wine complements herbed and spiced dishes, especially Pacific Rim and Mediterranean foods. MOON MOUNTAIN VINEYARD 2000 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley $40: "We have been organically farming this magnificent red soil--74 acres with 20 blocks--vineyard for the past five years, the earliest cabernet sauvignon grapes are now 35 years old. YORKVILLE CELLARS in Mendocino, County produces five Bordeaux varietals and 2003 was kind to these grapes in California, unlike the vintage in France. The summer season on the cool side slowed the ripening--better for flavor development. YORKVILLE is one of only a handful of wineries growing and bottling the five red grapes of Bordeaux. Each has its individual characteristics. In previous vintages, the organically grown wines have shown well too, all having won awards.
YORKVILLE 2000 Cabernet Franc, Rennie Vineyard, Yorkville Highlands $12: "A perennial favorite, this is a delicious example of that "other" Cabernet, which is actually a much older grape variety than Cabernet Sauvignon. According to The Beverage Tasting Institute: "Cherry and brown spice aromas. A rich entry leads to a medium-weight palate with forward fruit and a long finish displaying moderate tannins and fresh acidity." A perfect choice for cherry-glazed roast-pork tenderloin.
YORKVILLE
2001Petit Verdot, Rennie Vineyard, Yorkville Highlands$18: "Never
tasted a Petit Verdot? You're not alone. It is unique and
seldom
seen. There are only 322 bearing acres of it out of a
total acreage of 96,400 bearing acres in the North Coast premium
grape growing area, which includes the counties of Napa, Sonoma,
Mendocino and Lake. It is a late ripening grape, usually our
last to be picked. The 2001 was harvested on Oct. 23rd, our son,
Ben's, birthday. The long growing season helps produce intense
flavors. Dried cherries and toffee aromas, rich cherry fruit with
great length without heavy tannins. Pairs well with grilled meats
but try it with lasagna or baked ziti as well."
YORKVILLE 2001 Malbec Rennie Vineyard, Yorkville Highlands$18: "Our Malbec is made from the only producing Malbec acreage in Mendocino County. If fact, there are only 241 bearing acres of it out of a total acreage of 96,400 bearing acres in the North Coast premium grape growing area. After noting its inky-purple color, discover rich notes of berries, plums and dark chocolate. It tastes jammy with dark stone fruit flavors. As usual this can be aged 3 to 5 years or more if desired. Suitable for anything from a tri-tip steak to truffles."

LAFOND WINERY and VINEYARDS' Santa Rita Hills Syrah took top honors from the new Santa Barbara AVA. The LAFOND 2001 Syrah SRH $18 shows the deep, rich complexity of the new appellation. Located in the western end of the Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Rita Hills is a cold climate region where grapes benefit from a very long growing season. With the Syrah harvest commonly stretching into late November, there's impressive complexity and intensity resulting from long hang time. QUINTESSA has the quintessential wine estate. Located in the northeastern corner of Rutherford, the Napa Valley property includes a valley, a lake, a river, five hills, four microclimates and many soil types as well as rich flora and fauna. The land has been carefully matched to a large selection of rootstocks and clones. The result is a range of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc that allows wide stylistic options in the wine every vintage. According to Valeria Huneeus, vineyard master, "Serene best describes the 2000 growing season. A rainy winter with rather cold temperatures gave way to a very tranquil spring; there were neither freeze alerts nor dramatic heat spells. The vines--always in tune with Mother Nature--responded with a well-balanced display of fruit and leaves. Eventually, the fruit was able to dangle on the vines for a long time, evolving slowly to reach full maturity. QUINTESSA 2000 (72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc) expresses the season's ideal warm, rather than hot, weather that culminated in beautifully ripe tannins, an elegant wine of deep berry flavors and a sweet, broad mouthfeel with a soft tannin finish."

JARVIS, Unique Winery and Distinguished Wines:
JARVIS
is an
extraordinary place. I visited the winery some years ago, and
even though I've visited hundreds of wineries through the years, it
is truly unique. The Jarvis winemaking facility is totally
contained within 45,000 square feet of cave tunneled into the Vacas
Mountains. It is four miles east of the town of Napa. Visually
and technically, it is a masterpiece. Many of the finest wines
come from caves due to the invariable temperature and high humidity
levels natural to caves. Typically, caves are used to age
wine in barrels, since they're just not big enough for other
winery operations, particularly the fermentation tanks. Tunneling
techniques, however, have advanced in the past 30 years so that
William Jarvis and his associates could build the large
underground winery. As the cave extends farther into the
mountain, chambers become larger, so that the last one could
contain a basketball court. Even the big fermentation tanks are
underground, preserving the natural beauty of the outside
environment. “This circular
design makes a very efficient operation, allowing the winemaker and
his lab to be a few hundred feet from the aging galleries,” states
William Jarvis.
Capitalizing on the natural
underground water, the stream and waterfall running through the
center of the winery maintain an ideal humidity level for the
barrel-aging wines. The cascading water also has a calming effect.
All the wines are made from 100% Jarvis
estate grapes. During harvest, grapes are
transported in small 30lb. lugs. "We utilize these small
lugs rather than gondolas to prevent premature crushing,"
Dimitri says. "Once in the cave, the grapes won't see
daylight until they are sold as wine. Fermentation begins in
both
upright and rotary fermenters. Our upright tanks are shorter
and wider than most which improves the cap ratio for optimum color
and flavor extraction from the skins.
I'm extremely proud
of our two 14-ton rotary fermenters, which have a nearly perfect cap
ratio. They're used to produce the blending wines for our reserve
wines.
After fermentation, wines are stored to settle in upright Radoux oak
cuvees--numbered staves arrive for assembly in our facility by Radoux
coopers. Each
vintage of Jarvis wines are aged in 100% new French oak barrels.
Single tiers of barrels are stored in the aging galleries of
the cave, where they rest comfortably at a steady, year-round
temperature of 61°F, and a humidity level of 80%. When blending
occurs, it is often done in barrel to achieve perfect integration of
varietal components long before bottling."
Although more laborious, Mr. Jarvis and Dimitri Tchelistcheff believe
the benefits help make JARVIS wines ultra premium quality.
The wine is velvet on the palate." www.jarviswines.com
