APPLAUSE
ZD
ZD has released its 30th
consecutive vintage of Chardonnay with the 2001 Chardonnay release. The
important statistics that make this wine a delight follow. It remains one
of my favorites.
* Cold Barrel Fermentation - ZD Chardonnay is barrel fermented
at approximately 48 degrees in order to extend the fermentation for 6-8
weeks. At this cool temperature the wine has a creamy characteristic from the
yeast that swirl through the wine during primary fermentation.
* 0% Malolactic Fermentation - by inhibiting malolactic fermentation the wine
maintains its natural fruit characteristics and acidity, while
avoiding the common buttery/caramel characteristic found in younger Chardonnays.
* 100% American Oak Barrel Fermentation - ZD Wines began using American Oak
barrels in 1971. Realizing that seasoning the staves
removes the harsh characteristics sometimes associated with American Oak, ZD
Chardonnay acquires smooth vanillin and toasty oak uniqueness from
American Oak aging. The 2001 Chardonnay was aged for 10 months, while Reserve
Chardonnay, Napa Valley is aged for 18 months.
* ZD's Grapes - The vineyards are selected and farmed for their ability to
produce ZD's unique style of Chardonnay. The key is the capacity
to produce intense varietal character through full maturation, while maintaining
a crisp acidity to balance the richness of our wine.
IRON HORSE
IRON HORSE deserves a hats off for continuing
dedication to experimentation to discover, improve and provide the best and new
styles of wines. Joy
Sterling says she is most proud of the fact that winemaker/ husband Forrest
Tancer's IRON HORSE wines continue to get better and better. The proof
among many is in the IRON HORSE 2000 Cabernet Blend 1(one). A simple name
for a simply sophisticated, layered and lovely wine. This luscious blend
of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Cabernet Franc and 26% Merlot is a dream wine,
filled with delightful fragrances and tastes that the mind's eye imagines upon
first encountering it. BLEND 1 is limited so don't delay looking for it.
Joy tells me that they have been on a steep evolutionary track in the vineyard
for the past five years, investing in more rigorous crop management
programs--all aimed at heightening the distinctive tastes we are able to pull
out of the ground. Add to that the exceptional 2002 vintage,
perfectly healthy vineyards--no bugs, mildew or unwanted stress and especially to
her the fact that the grapes arrived exactly chilled at 50 degrees, locking the
flavor. Importantly, the wines show these little perfections.
- IRON HORSE 2000 T-bar-T Blend 1, Alexander
Valley, Sonoma County $32: "This luscious blend is regal with delicious odors
of dark berries, figs, ripe pears, cedar, vanilla, black pepper and dark
toasted oak with deep fruit flavors layered and integrated to fill the mouth.
The tannins are smooth, balanced and silky." The wine is simply
delicious.
- IRON HORSE 2002 Rose de Pinot Noir, Sonoma County-Green
Valley $15: Joy says there have been innovative ideas in the winery too.
"Our ideas for barrel fermentation for both red and white wines have
successfully taken our wines to yet another level. An additional,
painstaking step, which we tried for the first time last fall, was to bleed
off about 10% of the juice from the Pinot Noir tank after seven days of cold
soaking. The intent was to intensify the resulting red wine and the 2002
Pinots, now in barrel, are incredible--depth of character with with proper
weight and texture and silky--the wine just glides across the palate.
Plus, we gained a little something extra--700 cases of Rose de Pinot Noir.
Forrest says the wine is perfectly lovely in the glass--pretty as pink can
be--and an intense experience of fresh wild strawberries."
- IRON HORSE 2002 Rosato di Sangiovese, Alexander
Valley, Sonoma County $15: "This wine is the most incredible, intense
experience of wild berries, almost electric in color and equally intense in
flavor. It's technically dry, yet so full of fruit that it can stand
alone as an aperitif or with lighter fare--like a pasta dish or duck salad,
salmon, grilled vegetables, spicy flavors and Asian cuisine."
FESS PARKER
FESS PARKER visited Austin to receive an
award for his lifetime achievements of acting. The Texan stayed to share
his FESS PARKER wines with a community that admires his products and a people
who adore him as a person--a group whose love affair remains strong as ever for
this remarkable man, remarkable for his wholesome, reliable and worthwhile life.
His down-home style endears and here are some of his comments.
"I received an e-mail last week that made me chuckle. It contained a number of
quotes attributed to Will Rogers, probably the greatest political sage this
country has ever known. I thought I’d take this opportunity to share a few of my
favorites with you."
~ Never slap a man who’s chewing tobacco
~ Never miss a good chance to shut up
~ If you find yourself in a hole…stop digging
~ The quickest way to double your money is to fold it and put
it back on your wallet
~ Good judgment comes from experience and a lot of that
comes from bad judgment
~ If you’re riding ahead of the herd, take a look back every now
and then to make sure it’s still there.
Fess also reminded me that I had visited his family and the winery ten years ago
in Santa Barbara when the facility was under construction. I could hardly
believe that all that time had passed. But ten years worth of experience
shows well in Eli's wines (Fess' son). Of course they have improved--what
wine wouldn't improve from its first efforts to ten years of experience.
But Eli's wines have really improved, and I was delighted to get to taste
them. (please see mentions below).
CHATEAU ST. JEAN
CHATEAU ST. JEAN Winemaker Steve Reeder
finishes 25th harvest. Winemaker Steve Reeder says,
"Many years ago I worked for well-known winemaker John Parducci. In an interview John gave an unforgettable answer when
asked about his many years of experience. 'Forty years of experience?,' he
questioned. 'Ha! I have only done this 40 times. Harvest is only
once a year and you only get one chance to get it right." I've never
forgotten this statement. Having just completed my 25th harvest, I've
had another challenge to get it right. We were thrilled to re-introduce
our Sonoma County Cabernet last year after too long a hiatus, and I'm quite
pleased with this one from the 2000 harvest--a vintage for elegant wines.
Vineyards,
Sonoma County's coastal climate, soils and complex terrain of small valleys,
bench lands and hillsides interact to create prime conditions for growing
grapes. This diversity of growing conditions enables several grape varieties
to excel in the region, including Cabernet Sauvignon. For this bottling,
CHATEAU ST. JEAN 2000 Sonoma County
Cabernet Sauvignon, we selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes from
vineyards in the Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek
appellations of Sonoma County to craft this superior Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine
has black cherries, chocolate, ripe plums, violets and sweet vanilla oak notes
on the nose, and the palate has layers of ripe blackberries, roasty tobac,
cedar, mint and spice, richly textured with supple tannins with a coffee
and smoky finish."
NEWS
DOMAINE HENRI BOURGEOIS Newsletter reported that the 2002
harvest was very good yet "unusual in terms of pollination and millerandage due
to effects on flowering caused by a sudden heat wave. While total number
of berries dropped, the excellent health of the vineyard protected the grapes in
becoming ever more concentrated with sugars and good structure."

NEW
RELEASES
(quotes are winemakers' comments)
SILVERADO VINEYARDS Winemaster Jack Stuart says his new
releases display the "unique and refined varietal characteristics for which they
are known. Silverado's winemaking philosophy is rooted in the vineyards.
From harvest to bottle, each step in the winemaking process is dedicated to
expressing the character of grapes grown on each of the winery's fine properties
in the Napa Valley, whether Carneros Chardonnay or Stags Leap District
Cabernet Sauvignon. When our fruit comes to the winery, passionate
winemakers work with it through only the finest equipment. Our
wines are determined by the vineyards they come from. Ultimately, it is the
quality of these vineyards that has set us apart."
Biography: Winemaker Jack Stuart joined Silverado in 1980, even before
construction began on the winery, and immediately took charge of technical
design and vineyard development. He is a fifth-generation Californian who grew
up in Santa Clara Valley and received a literature degree from Stanford. After
teaching English, first in Japan and later at a Bay Area middle school, his
interest in literature led to editing books for a small San Francisco publisher.
In the mid-seventies, his growing passion for wine took him to the University of
California at Davis for graduate study in viticulture and oenology. Shortly
thereafter, he moved to Napa Valley and Silverado. Today, Jack Stuart is
acknowledged to be one of the best winemakers in the valley, and has received
accolades from The International Wine & Spirit Competition in London, the Wine
Spectator, and the Los Angeles Times.
- SILVERADO VINEYARDS 2001 Sauvignon Blanc $14: "Mineral
aromas mix with grapefruit and tarragon scents. A crisp and vibrant wine
driven by flavors of Meyer lemon, pear and anise that persist on the finish."
- SILVERADO VINEYARDS 2001 Chardonnay $20: "Pear, bright
apple, sweet oak and mineral aromas, baked apple, vanilla and toasty oak
flavors dominate, medium body with rich, silky texture, exceptional weight and
a long, lingering finish."
- SILVERADO VINEYARDS 1999 Merlot $25: "Deep ruby color,
intense ripe aromas of berries, dark chocolate, hazelnut and truffles, medium
body, velvety texture, concentrated Bing cherry, cocoa and bay leaf flavors,
long finish--richest Merlot we've made since 1992."

MILLSREEF Mills Reef Winery was
established in 1989 in Tauranga, New Zealand, by the Preston family. The
wines have received ongoing significant critical acclaim--winning over 200
medals in national and international competitions, -proving that through
commitment and a dedication to excellence, even a relatively new brand from the
bottom of the world can quickly become established as one of the premium labels
in New World wines.
MILLSREEF has quite a story. The
family wanted a name both unique and with meaning to tell a story.
Paddy Preston's (founder/winemaker) birth name is Warren Mills Preston--Mills
referring to Paddys' great grandfather, Charles Mills, a sea captain who
was also involved in mining pursuits in early New Zealand prior to becoming a
prominent Member of Parliament from 1890 - 1908, latterly as the Minister of
Trade and Customs. Mills Reef refers to Charles Mills exploits
watching for reefs at sea and mining for reefs of gold. Whether or not Charles
Mills ever found his "Reef" we can't say for sure, but we do know the Preston
family has certainly found theirs, in the pleasure and enjoyment of making Mills
Reef wines.
Mills Reef purchased the Mere Road Vineyard in 1992. At the time it was planted
in Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir. We knew this
vineyard was in a very special area of Hawkes Bay so decided to replant in the
traditional Bordeaux varieties, and Syrah. The first crop came off Mere Road in
1997 and from it was produced Mills Reef Elspeth Cabernet Merlot. Winemaker
Paddy was convinced these were special wines, so labelled them under the Mills
Reef premium range "Elspeth". These wines are produced only when the winemaker
feels the vintage and particular fruit picked are of
exceptional quality. The wines are named after Paddy's mother Elspeth Preston, a
gracious lady who is 93! and lives in Wellington - would you believe Elspeth
still drives a car!
From the first vintage in 1995, Mills Reef Elspeth wines have proven quality
status. Winners of 21 gold medals and five trophies over five vintages,
the wines continue to show their quality.
Other grape varieties used by Mills Reef are grown throughout the Hawkes Bay and
come from various contract growers. Mills Reef have developed long term
relationships with these growers and are involved in the viticulture of each
vineyard.
- MILLSREEF Elspeth 2000 Syrah
Hawkes Bay, NZ $30: "This exceptional wine has distinctive black pepper
characters of Syrah (Shiraz) variety. Made at Mills Reef's from its
vineyard on Mere Road, the grapes were hand harvested, destemmed and then
fermented in stainless steel vats, aged in French oak barriques for 18 months
and bottled on the 11th September. With fragrance of black pepper
and violets, this purple-black Syrah is a powerful and robust wine, a lovely
intensity of blackcurrant, pepper and plum flavors giving a spiced finish,
built for cellaring but already delicious."
Awards Recieved: Gold Medal and Trophy Air New Zealand Wine Awards 2001,
Gold Medal and Trophy New Zealand Wine Society Royal Easter Wine Show 2002,
Gold Medal and Trophy Bragato Wine Awards 2002, Gold Medal London
International Wine and Spirit Competition 2002.
- MILLSREEF Elspeth 2000 Merlot
Hawkes Bay, NZ $30: "This superb Hawkes Bay red is made from densely planted
Merlot vines at Mills Reef's very own vineyard Mere Road, situated in the
heart of the famous Gimblett Gravels district in Hawkes Bay. The grapes were
all hand harvested, destemmed and then fermented in stainless steel vats. The
wine was then aged in French oak barriques for 18 months and bottled on the
13th September. Dark, fragrant and highly concentrated with a deep
purple-flushed hue, this is a superb Hakes Bay red. Elegant and approachable,
a mouthfilling and vibrantly fruity wine with a backbone of ripe supple
tannins. With lovely sweet fruit characters of rich blackcurrant, spice and
plum, a strong nutty oak influence and a powerful finish, this wine will
reward cellaring.
- MILLSREEF Elspeth 2000 Cabernet
Sauvignon, Hawkes Bay $35: "Densely colored and crammed with flavor this
Hawkes Bay red was made from close-planted vines at Mills Reef's very own
vineyard Mere Road, situated in the heart of the famous Gimblett Gravels
district in Hawkes Bay.
The grapes were all hand harvested, destemmed and then fermented in stainless
steel vats. The wine was then aged in French oak barriques for 18 months and
bottled on the 10th September. Powerful, with notably concentrated
blackcurrant, cassis, plum and spice flavors, French oak complexity and a
foundation of ripe, supple tannins, this Cabernet Sauvignon is a distinguished
red that will reward cellaring for many years.

CASTORO CELLARS' Winemaker Tom Myers was voted “2002
Winemaker of the Year” by the California Mid-State Fair on July 17, 2002. The
nominees were selected by members of the Mid-State Fair Grape Posse, a committee
comprised of industry leaders from throughout San Luis Obispo County.
Almost 200 ballots were received for the final vote from members of the county’s
three viticulture associations: the Paso Robles Vintners and Growers’
Association (PRVGA), San Luis Obispo Vintners and Growers’ Association (SLOVGA),
and the Central Coast Wine Growers’ Association (CCWGA).
Castoro Cellars was founded by the husband and wife team of Niels and Bimmer
Udsen in the early 1980s with a warm and welcoming style. The winery was named
after the Italian translation of Niels’ long-time nickname, “Beaver,” prompting
the motto “Dam Fine Wines.” From the wine cellar to the tasting room, all
who contribute to Castoro wines hold strongly to the belief that high quality
wines should be accessible to all consumers. Located within the Paso
Robles AVA, Castoro Cellars welcomes all wine palates. For Tasting Room
directions, please contact: (888) 326-3463, or via web at:
www.castorocellars.com.
Castoro Cellars' 2000 Vineyard Tribute Zinfandel won a "Double Gold" at the
Pittsburg Seafood Festival's 6th Annual California Zinfandel Championship.
The Zinfandel is a marriage of the best lots of the vintage,
producing a unique wine that showcases Paso Robles Zinfandel. It's a Zin lovers
dream! -- big wine with ripe and jammy fruit aromas and flavors.
- Merlot 2000 Paso Robles$14 produced intense fruit
flavors and aromas. The weather was nearly perfect which allowed the grapes to
reach full maturity with great balance in acid and sugar. You will find that
this Merlot has a subtle but full nose of fruit and oak. We use a combination
of newer and older American oak barrels to attain the barrel aged character
without an overbearing oak component. This wine is great with any roasted meat
or vegetable dish. Try it with barbecued steaks smoked with wine soaked oak
staves for a real treat!
- Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 $14, "a nearly perfect
growing season. The grapes had great intensity and color. In addition to
Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine contains Petite Verdot and Merlot to add
complexity. This wine is packed with rich berry and full fruit capped with a
toasty oak note. The finish fills your mouth with lush flavors that are not
blown away with excessive tannins. History shows however that this Paso Robles
Cabernet Sauvignon will age for many years in your cellar. Bring it out in
five years for an amazing treat! Enjoy with any hearty entrée or with a
selection of rich cheeses.

- BERINGER 2000 Napa Valley Private Reserve Chardonnay $35:
"I've made this Private Reserve for over a decade now,"
says Winemaker Ed Sbragia, "and although each vintage has
its own personality, I know that one thing has stayed constant--it's always the
best Chardonnay I can make. I hope you enjoy it!" Ed keeps each
vineyard lot separate and matches the juice of a vineyard with to new French
Nevers for fermentation, and he uses 100% malolactic. Stirring the less daily
for eight months makes it rich and creamy encourages a smoky, nutty toasty
character. Ed balanced the ripe, luscious fruit flavors in Francoise
Freres thin-staved barrels to round out the wine. Enjoy this mouth-filling
butterscotch, pineapple, pear and buttery wine.
- BERINGER 2001 Knights Valley Alluvium Blanc $16:
Beginning in the 1970s, Winemaster Ed Sbragia and vineyard manager Bob
Steinhauer began working with Knights Valley fruit and spent the next decade
learning the appellation's microclimates and alluvial soils. This
knowledge led to planting sauvignon blanc and semillon after phylloxera hit.
Bob and Ed knew that vigorous varietals such as sauvignon blanc and
semillon would be naturally restricted by the gravelly, low nutrition soils
and with modern trellising techniques, they were able to grow vines with
optimal sun-to-cluster exposure, allowing consistent maturity in the grapes.
They obviously got it right! Winemaker Laurie Hook says, "Knights Valley
is incredibly consistent in that it always gives us fruit with intense flavors
and good crisp acidity." What more could you ask for? You'll love
this new "Alluvium Blanc." It's perfect for sipping or enjoying with a
variety--almost all--foods.
- BERINGER 199 Clear Lake Zinfandel comes from red
volcanic soils and high rock content--lots of obsidian--with growing season
warm days and cold nights to give high quality Zin. This ripe,
well-balanced wine will make you a happy drinker--especially for $14.
- BERINGER FOUNDERS' ESTATE Winemaker Ron Shreve says his
recent Merlot and Chardonnay are "welcome little gifts to help me through
beginning spring and bud break." BERINGER FOUNDERS' ESTATE 2001
Chardonnay, California $12: "This wine reminds me of dancers moving on the
floor in time to the music. Each has individual style--from the
light-footed Monterey fruit that tangos brightly on your tongue, to the more
languid, graceful waltz-like Chardonnay from the North Coast--distinct
components in time with each other to create something better than the parts."
BERINGER FOUNDERS' ESTATE 2000 Merlot, California $12: "A wine of good
balance, bright blackberry fruit, layered with cocoa and sweet vanillin-oak
spice aromas and flavors that finish with a hint of raspberry."

WILLIAM HILL WINERY "Since our beginning in 1978,
William Hill Winery has developed a reputation for producing rich, intense Napa
Valley wines with a distinctive elegance. Focusing on Chardonnay, Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot, we produce three tiers of wine: Napa Valley, Napa
Valley Reserve and Aura Cabernet Sauvignon. Each showcases our outstanding
grape sources and offers the signature elegance of William Hill Winery."
- WILLIAM HILL WINERY 2001 Chardonnay, Napa Valley $15:
"Our Chardonnay is gently oak-aged on the lees, allowing the fruit to shine,
displaying a smooth, creamy texture with hints of nectarine, honeysuckle and
crisp apple. The result is a well-balanced wine - tantalizing on the palate
with a crisp, clean finish. Enjoy with many seafood dishes (sautéed
halibut in butter sauce, grilled shrimp or salmon, or fresh crab cakes). This
wine also shines with a simple pasta salad, sprinkled with fresh Parmesan,
Asiago or Gruyere cheese."
- WILLIAM HILL WINERY 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
$22: "A supple wine, exhibiting aromas of cassis, currant and raspberry. A
small amount of grapes were whole berry fermented to add softness in the
tannin structure and added richness, polished texture and earthy body.
Pair with roasted meats, wild mushroom risotto or any dish featuring
Portobello mushrooms--a great match with wine's earthy characteristics."

KING ESTATE doors opened a decade ago
with a focus on Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Now
Chardonnay happily rounds out the fine KING ESTATE reputation.
- KING ESTATE 1999 Chardonnay, Oregon $10: "This wine is
hand crafted. Initial barrel and then secondary malolactic fermentation
are monitored closely with lees stirred weekly. The result if a fruit
forward style, with full flavors and a nice balance of oak and malolactic
characters. It has aromas of apple, pear and tropical fruit plus notes
of vanilla, oak spice and honey. With a bright entrance and soft
viscosity, this well-balanced wine has flavors of orange, tropical fruits and
sweet oak, a lingering mouthfeel and finish of integrated tannins."

CHATEAU ST. JEAN has released two wines from the Robert
Young Vineyard. Winemaker Steve Reeder describes this vineyard as having
Charisma. "The magnetic charm of this vineyard seduced me the first
time I walked the rows with Robert Young. It reminded of studying
vineyard designated wines at U.C. Davis--and specifically pioneering Young in
the 1970s. Now, 28 years later, I'm making this wine and continuing the
legacy. The two wines released--CHATEAU ST. JEAN 2001 Pinot Noir $18
(tasting room only) and CHATEAU ST. JEAN 2000 Chardonnay $25--illustrate the
beauty, charisma and consistency of this vineyard."
- CHATEAU ST. JEAN 2000 Chardonnay, Sonoma $25: "Bartlett pears,
creamy vanilla and buttery notes, viscous entry with lemon oil, toasty
hazelnut and rich layers of ripe apples, pears and stone fruit in a balanced
and rich wine."
- CHATEAU ST. JEAN 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma $27:
Winemaker Steve Reeder says, "Having just completed my 25th harvest, I've
had another challenge to get it right. We were thrilled to re-introduce
our Sonoma County Cabernet last year after too long a hiatus, and I'm quite
pleased with this one from the 2000 harvest--a vintage for elegant wines.
Vineyards,
Sonoma County's coastal climate, soils and complex terrain of small valleys,
benchlands and hillsides interact to create prime conditions for growing
grapes. This diversity of growing conditions enables several grape varieties
to excel in the region, including Cabernet Sauvignon. For this bottling,
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes were selected from
vineyards in the Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek
appellations of Sonoma County to craft this superior Cabernet Sauvignon.
The 2000 season returns to 'normal' after '98 and '99. The wine
has black cherries, chocolate, ripe plums, violets and sweet vanilla oak notes
on the nose, and the palate has layers of ripe blackberries, roasty tobac,
cedar and mint and spice, richly textured with supple tannins with a coffee
and smoky finish."

- GEYSER PEAK 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley,
Sonoma $17: "Richly layered,
classic Alexander Valley fruit, richly layered, back cherry, cola, cassis,
palate with depth balance and structure and the flavors follow to finish with
fine tannins."
- GEYSER PEAK 2001 Chardonnay, Russian River Valley $16:
"pear, lime, citrus blossom accented by smoky vanillin oak nose, a palate of
fruit and oak perfectly married and balanced with natural acidity, creamy
texture by less stirring and use of water-bent American oak barrels."
- GEYSER PEAK 2002 Sauvignon Blanc, California $10:
"vibrant style with distinct character, gooseberry, grapefruit, lemon and
grassy on the nose, balanced palate finishes clean, crisp acidity and lingers,
pair with shellfish--especially oysters."

STUHLMULLER VINEYARDS owners Roger and Carmen say that old
maps show their property was planted with grapes before the turn of the century;
however, Prohibition took care of that the land was planted to walnuts and
plums. Afterwards, the property was left alone, for the most part, until
the 1970s when some acres were planted to vineyard. The Stuhlmullers
acquired the land in 1982 after searching for a weekend place in Sonoma--a short
drive form their San Francisco home. Roger revered the land immediately,
added more vineyard and replanted existing plots. "The old walnuts are
still there," he says," and we knew this place was special as soon as we saw it.
We sold our fruit until son Fritz decided to bottle our own wine in the 1990s."
The first wines appeared in 1996, a new winery was built within the old red barn
in 2000. "It's a vest pocket gem for our small amount of selected fruit
from special blocks" The limited case productions of the preciously
selected grapes for the STUHLMULLER 2000 ALEXANDER VALLEY CHARDONNAY $23 and the
STUHLMULLER 1999 ALEXANDER VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON $36 that comprise them are
a real treat! I hope you can find them for they are
well worth the search.
- STUHLMULLER 2000 Alexander Valley Chardonnay$23:
"mineral-like, elegant quality, ripe apple, fresh, complex, and balanced with
a good structure"
- STUHLMULLER 1999 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon$36:

sweetness, supple and well-structured"

KENWOOD has two new merlot releases and they tell a tale of
two vineyards. Grown just a few miles apart in the Sonoma Valley and
carefully handcrafted, each wine shows the influence of place.
KENWOOD MASSARA Vineyard in warm upper reaches of Sonoma Valley catches the
afternoon sun, yielding super-concentrated merlot grapes. KENWOOD 1999
Reserve-Massara Merlot $25 was warm fermented in small French oak to smooth
tannins and add complexity to give aromas of black cherry and plum, notes of
herbal and smoke. It's bold yet supple.
The JACK LONDON Vineyard is in a southeast-facing bowl in the western hills of
Sonoma Valley, where cool afternoon breezes and oblique sunshine keep
temperatures comfortable. A cool vintage, KENWOOD 2000 Jack London
Merlot $30 has generous fruit and "sublime elegance." Red cherry,
blueberry and herb aromas with vanilla and cedar, made in French and American
oak, lush and smooth.
- KENWOOD 2001Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley $17: "Pinot
Noir has a well-deserved reputation for capriciousness, but in Russian River
Valley it enjoys growing conditions that bring out its best qualities.
Fermented in stainless steel with partial whole-berry additions for a fresh,
fruit-forward component, the wine displays opulent red cherry and rose aromas,
hint of smoke complexity, and flavors of cherry, raspberry and plum, medium
body and backdrop of cedar and herbs."

LAKE SONOMA WINERY in Dry Creek Valley rests on a 20-acre
hillside estate and has an observation deck with a panoramic view of the entire
Valley. With the purchase of Lake Sonoma Winery in May 1996, KORBEL
champagne producer Gary Heck found a hidden treasure in the Dry Creek Valley.
Named for the nearby lake, the winery was founded in 1977 by Robert and Mary Lou
Polson. The winery specializes in Zinfandels from various Sonoma
appellations, as well as Cabernet from the Alexander Valley and Chardonnay from
the Russian River Valley. Limited case production guarantees the highest
quality standards. Construction on a new facility and was completed
in December 1999 so the winery now has a tasting room and state-of-the-art wine
production facility.
- LAKE SONOMA WINERY 2000 Saini Farms OLD VINE Zinfandel
$20: "The wine was produced entirely from 70 year old, head trained, dry
farmed vineyards on gravelly benchland in the Dry Creek Valley. The grapes
were crushed and fermented warm, pumping-over kept juice in contact with the
cap of floating skins regularly. The wine was pressed off the skins
slightly sweet and racked to 60 gallon French and American oak barrels with
malolactic fermentation completed in the barrel. The wine aged in barrel 18
months. It's full bodied with rich black cherry and berry fruit flavors
over a solid oak framework. Still young, this wine should continue to improve
over the next 5 years.
- LAKE SONOMA WINERY 1999 1999 Alexander Valley Cabernet
Sauvignon $22: " Full bodied and well extracted with big fruit and oak
flavors. Still a little young, this wine should continue to improve over the
next 8 to 10 years. Winemaker Notes The grapes for this wine were
crushed and fermented warm, pumping juice from the tank bottom over the cap of
floating grape skins on a regular basis. The wine was pressed off the skins at
dryness and allowed to settle in a stainless steel tank. The clear wine was
then racked to 60 gallon French and American oak barrels to finish malolactic
fermentation. The wine was barrel aged a total of 30 months.
- LAKE SONOMA WINERY 2001 2001 Russian River Valley
Chardonnay $15: "Apple, pear, pineapple, lemon and floral aroma are balanced
with just the right amount of sweet oak to produce a lively, complex wine.
Winemaker Notes--The grapes for this wine were whole cluster pressed to keep
harsh phenolic compounds at a low level. After a short settling period, clear
juice was racked to French oak barrels for fermentation. The wine was aged on
the fermentation lees for nine months with regular stirring to resuspend the
lees and make a rounder, more complex wine. All barrels completed malolactic
fermentation. Pair with a variety of foods including fresh fruit, aged
cheeses, green salads, lighter pasta, poultry, pork and seafood.

SHAFER VINEYARDS has several new releases for your
pleasure, including one of my favorite Chardonnays. I watched Doug Shafer
start making wine as a "pup" about 18 years ago. He has been good since
the very beginning. With the SHAFER 2001 Red Shoulder Ranch
Chardonnay, Doug remarked that "sometimes the planets align--that's what
happened to winemakers in Napa Valley during the 2001 vintage. Weather,
fruit, know-how and good fortune all combined to create what many expect to be a
vintage to remember. We could tell that something special had happened out
in the vineyards because we were getting phenomenal flavors at the crush pad,"
he said. Shafer Winemaker Elias Fernandez agrees--"This first
release of the 2001 vintage is simply a peek behind the curtain for the show to
come." The way 2001 started signaled nothing auspicious. The year
began in the middle of a dry winter, which built up far less moisture in the
soil than is typical. Spring delivered a late frost, but the growing
season that followed was one that grapes love--uneventful to the point of being
thoroughly forgettable. "I can barely remember 2001," Doug adds.
"That's always a good sin."
- SHAFER 2001 Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay, Napa Valley
$37: "100% barrel fermented with wild yeast and 0% malolactic, this is hands
down the best expression of Chardonnay fruit and character Shafer has yet
achieved. The flavors--tropical fruit, green apple, pineapple,
apricots-- are explosive and offer extraordinary length."
- SHAFER 2000 Firebreak®,
Napa Valley $33: Doug is fond of saying that he and his dad John were both
teachers before they were vintners. Today the roles are reversed, they
are the students, each year learning something new from the vineyards they
cultivate and the wine they produce. "Blending spicy Sangiovese with a touch
of Cabernet Sauvignon, Firebreak was inspired by John Shafer's goal to create
a unique proprietary wine. The wine takes its name from a vineyard knoll
once scorched by a wildfire, now planted to vines which provide a natural
firebreak, Doug explained. "This is our tenth Sangiovese," Elias says,
"and the one we've been waiting for--both our approach to the wine and
the vines have reached a new maturity. The fruit is truly expressing
itself, offering facets of cranberry, black pepper and spiciness." The
wine had 26 months in 30% new French oak barrels, and is 94% Sangiovese and 6%
Cabernet Sauvignon.
- SHAFER 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley $48: Doug
Shafer tells me, "Wine is often characterized as a singular collaboration
between a winemaker and a vineyard. The reality is more complex.
There are lots of relationships that must work well behind the scenes to
prepare a bottle of wine to send off into the world. One key one is
between vintner and grower." Winemaker Elias says, "This wine makes it
fun to be a winemaker, offering lots of freedom to select and blend the best
of Napa terroir--Cabernet from Stags Leap District with its softness and rich
core of fruit, St. Helena with its higher acidity and dustiness, and south of
Oak Knoll with bigger, chalkier tannins. Our intent each year is to
create a snapshot of the vintage. This one offers layers of herbs,
cedar, blackberry, cherry, spread over a juicy core of fruit."

IRON HORSE's Joy
An additional,
painstaking step, which we tried for the first time last fall, was to bleed
off about 10% of the juice from the Pinot Noir tank after seven days of cold
soaking. The intent was to intensify the resulting red wine and the 2002
Pinots, now in barrel, are incredible--depth of character with proper
weight and texture and silky--the wine just glides across the palate.

BELVEDERE VINEYARDS and WINERY Despite distinct
differences among microclimates in which Belvedere grows grapes, all of our
vineyards are located within a few miles of the winery, an important asset to
the Belvedere philosophy. We believe there is something soulful about fruit
grown in our own backyard, and proximity to the vineyards means we can watch the
vines daily, picking the grapes at peak flavor. Since our winery is situated
near the joining point of three renowned Sonoma appellations, our winemaker can
produce wines reflecting several distinct terroirs.
- BELVEDERE VINEYARDS 1999 Healdsburg Ranches Cabernet
Sauvignon This Cabernet comes from two revered Vineyards, one in the Dry
Creek Valley, the other in Alexander Valley. Fruit from our vineyards in the
Dry Creek Valley provides structure and elegance, along with hallmark aromas
of cassis, black tea and mountain herbs. While fruit from our vineyards in
Alexander Valley add luxurious flavors of cocoa, black cherry and smoky-sweet
spice. Together they make a Cabernet Sauvignon that we feel is an excellent
example of an exceptional terroir.
- BELVEDERE VINEYARDS 2000 Healdsburg Ranches Zinfandel is
like no other Zin we have ever made: jazzy and fun, it's aroma overflows with
raspberry cordial. The fruit bursts with summer berries, and the palate has a
sweet, chuckling ripeness. It finishes soft and jammy, with a light,
coffee-like dryness. Sip after sip, it's hard not to like: jubilant, zippy,
never boring, the perfect companion for a new love, or a renewed one.
- BELVEDERE VINEYARDS 2000 Healdsburg Ranches Released for
the first time in March 2000, this Merlot is a blend from our two best Merlot
vineyards, one in Dry Creek Valley, the other in Alexander Valley. Our goal
was to produce wine that showcased the complexity of our Dry Creek Mountain
fruit, while maintaining a smooth, silky finish while young. The soft
style and rich aromatics of this Merlot make it one of our favorites. You will
be surprised by the generosity found in this wine.

CLOS DU BOIS owners recognized in the late 1970s that

Alexander Valley expressing the unique personality of the vineyard and the
vintage.

AMIZETTA is a 40-acre hillside estate in Napa Valley owned
by Houston, Texas, natives Spencer and Amizetta Clark (a 15th generation direct
descendent of Pocahontas) developed in 1979. They planted selected
cuttings from heralded vineyards. By 1985 a small winery had been
built. Their first release of Cabernet Sauvignon followed and featured a
long aging period--2½ years in barrel and another
two years bottle to produce a heft, age worthy wine. "Now, 20 years later,
" Spencer says, "this area is still a secluded, undiscovered part of Napa
Valley--8miles east of Silverado Trail. We have plenty of challenges in
this isolated growing region, like turkeys that feast on our ripe grapes."
Nonetheless, production is planned to reach 2000 cases with
⅔
Cabernet Sauvignon and ⅓
Merlot. "At that piont," Spencer continues, "I hope to have
more help from my sons Spencer Jr., Perry and Eddie and daughter Amizetta--who
are already participating in the day-to-day operations."
- AMIZETTA 2000 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley

Tacchino Selvatico Napa Valley $75: "This wine comes from selected parcels
of blocks four and five in front of the house from vines planted in
1980--fromrocky, porous hillside soils that produce small crops with intense

blackberry with hints of cinnamon and clove and flavors of blackberry and
black cherry culminating in a long finish--classic and powerful."
- AMIZETTA 2000 Estate Merlot, Napa Valley $37: ""Our
four-acre Merlot vineyard has rocky outcroppings, chalky soils and

RICHARD LONGORIA WINES of Santa Barbara County showcase the
lovely wines this region is capable of producing. I've enjoyed my
friendship with Rick and Diana and their wines for almost a decade and
watched the evolution with pride and pleasure. They are a family-run
winery that produces small amounts of ultra-premium, hand-crafted wines from the
finest vineyards in Santa Barbara County. Rick is one of the pioneers in
the region, having established their winery in 1982; however, he has been
involved with local wine producers since 1976. The LONGORIA wines are
small treasures, worth the search, and with every family wine project, Diana
adds enormously to every aspect of the wine business. To my great
admiration, their daughter Sarah is a ballerina.
- RICHARD LONGORIA WINES 2001 Chardonnay, Santa Rita Hills
$25: "We produced most of our grapes at higher sugar levels than last year.
The result is heavier, riper wine, though still retaining balance and
elegance, partially because of high acidity. The wine has aromas of
sweet candied apples hint of cinnamon and custard. On the palate the
wine is rich, full bodied, and has a beautiful integration of oak of fruit.
It's expansive in the mouth with a toasty, v=creamy finish. Pair with
seafood dishes with cream sauces and light game like quail and turkey."
- RICHARD LONGORIA WINES 2000 Syrah, Santa Barbara County
$22: "For our third vintage, we found more delicious grape sources--White Hawk
Vineyard and Gainey's. These wines were blended with our other sources
and a small amount of Stolpman Vineyard Mourvedre. A complex Syrah
resulted, saturated and dark purple with a nose of raspberry, floral, dusty
pepper and sweet oak, and soft tannins and spicy character. Enjoy for
three to five years with Provencal meats, stews and a selection of fine
cheeses."
- RICHARD LONGORIA WINES 2000 Pinot Noir, Bien Nacido
Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley $36: "Our wine is another great example of Pinot
Noir from this great vineyard. Beautiful, fruit forward ripe aromatics
characterize the nose, while on the palate the wine is rich with plush yet
powerful flavors. It has a silky mouthfeel--a hallmark of our Pinot
Noir--and will pea in about three to five years.
- RICHARD LONGORIA WINES 2000 Cabernet Franc, Blues Cuvee,
Santa Ynez Valley $25: "I enjoy making all my wines, including this one.
Cabernet Franc, I must say, may be the 'funnest' wine I make. Since in
bottle, the 2000 is showing the 'user friendly' characteristic of the vintage
in general. It has aromas of herbs, fruit and licorice. The palate
is rich, medium body and supple texture with moderately soft tannins and a
cherry like favor. the acidity is perfectly balanced and provides a
pleasingly long finish. Enjoy for four to seven years with red-sauced
pastas, red meats, quail and rabbit."

VIETTI WINERY owns 79 acres of land that is prized at
$200,000 an acre. Luca Currado, oenologist of the winery that has been in
his family for five generations, says, "We believe in terroir and that each
glass of wine should be a unique experience. As winemaker, it is my job to
let the grape speak and to educate the consumer to appreciate its expression
rather than try to change the grape to please the drinker. "
Apparently, there's a global trend towards "fashions in wine styles" that cause
some winemakers to make wines just because they sell--not because they are true
expressions of their terroir. Vietti wines prefer to express the
land where the wine grows.
- VIETTI Barbera d' Asti 1999 La Crena, Italy $35:
"A lush, velvety wine with strong blackberry and plum notes. On the
palate the wine is elegantly structured with good acidity, lean tannins, and
subtle oak. The finish is long and active."
- VIETTI Barolo d'Asti 1997 Castiglione, DOCG $50: "A ripe
and full-bodied wine, it represents three terroir. It is characterized
by berry and mineral notes along with spice, earth and roses. The wine
should age well, for up to 20 years. Enjoy at approximately 65 degrees.
