FEATURE: TRINCHERO Napa Valley Single Vineyard Wines:  TRINCHERO Napa Valley is sourced from prime estates throughout the Valley and these luscious wines document the privilege.  TRINCHERO Winemaker Mario Monticelli and I enjoyed a tasting luncheon and I was amazed by the consistently elegant, compellingly fruit-filled aromatics, and beautifully balanced wines.  Mario tells me that he is a minimalist, but the layers of complexity and generous plethora of flavors, aromas and textures defy his seeming simplicity.  Nonetheless, Mario says, "My goal is to bring forth the best expression of the fruit and land that grow the wine."   The TRINCHERO Napa Valley focus is on estate grown, single-vineyard selections and Mario keeps things as natural as possible.  He joined the company in 2007 after considerable experience at highly regarded estates such as Quintessa, Lail Vineyards, Quixote and others.  Each hand-crafted, luxury-class wine depicts the high-quality standards and subtly showcases the flavor profiles of the vineyard site. Mario says, "The Napa Valley tier offers small production, site-specific, luxury-class wines showcasing Trinchero's 200 estate acres in Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford and southern Napa.  Each wine, with the exception of our Meritage, is a varietal designate from a single site.  For example, the 28-acre Chicken Ranch Vineyard borders the northern Rutherford appellation. Sustainable farming methods (some Biodynamic) low yields and aggressive canopy management produce wines that are dark, dense and packed with Rutherford Dust.  In addition to our own properties – Main Street, Chicken Ranch, Mary’s and Vista Montone – we work with a few highly respected growers.  Having access to great sites is a major first step in making great wine.  Hands-on farming and winemaking techniques are key to unlocking the greatness of the land, and prior to planting a site, the climate and soils are carefully analyzed to better understand the terroir."  Mario says, "Weather stations and multiple soil pits are essential tools in helping us determine block design, rootstocks, spacing, trellising, varieties, clones and farming procedures.   Sites with richer soils receive rootstocks that inhibit yields: Sites with poorer soils might use closer spacing to encourage competition.  Cooler vineyards, like Vista Montone in southern Napa are perfect for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir while mid-valley, warmer spots like Chicken Ranch and Main Street are ideal for red Bordeaux varieties.  Our viticulture team influences wine quality and character in the vineyard through various techniques.  Sustainable and, in some cases, Biodynamic farming methods are employed in all of our Napa vineyards. Crop levels are kept low (average three tons per acre) to guarantee concentration and depth.  Cover crops are planted to soak up water and increase intensity.  Fruit is dropped during the growing season to encourage even ripening patterns.  Strategic leaf removal ensures better sun exposure and air circulation.  Our goal is to grow ripe, flavorful fruit that shows the character of the site (terroir) and personality of the variety."    ¶  "In the winery, we tailor our winemaking to each lot based upon vineyard blocks.  Pre-soaks, length of maceration, temperatures, time in oak are all determined based upon the nature of the grapes.  For reds we have developed a special seed removal regime allowing us to work the skins more aggressively without fear of excessive seed extraction. We also utilize pumping from tank to tank to increase extraction--a technique especially valuable with thick-skinned varieties like Cabernet that can fail to realize full extraction potential with the gentler techniques (punch downs or pumpovers).  For white wines we look for ripe fruit, varietal accuracy and underlying rather than overt power.  Any lots that for one reason or another don’t fit stylistically with the Trinchero Napa Valley program are declassified into our Trinchero Family Selection tier. This process raises the quality of both tiers of wine." ¶  At its essence, Trinchero Napa Valley uses the variety to interpret the site and the site to interpret the variety.   ¶   Mario and I tasted six of his rich, ripe, layered and luscious wines--all  flawless.  Each wine was so delicious I struggled to pick a favorite. I can only suggest that you do the same: TRINCHERO Napa Valley 2007 Meritage; TRINCHERO Napa Valley 2007 Chicken Ranch Vineyard Merlot; TRINCHERO Napa Valley 2007 Cabernet Franc; TRINCHERO Napa Valley 2007 Cloud's Nest Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Mount Veeder; TRINCHERO Napa Valley 2007  Mario's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena, and the TRINCHERO Napa Valley 2007 Central Park West Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, St. Helena.  The Trinchero family oversees an extended portfolio of brands.   Nonetheless, the eponymous wine receives a much deserved honored place and I was pleased to have discovered Mario's elegant touch manifested is each of the wines.

WINERY OF THE MONTH: SIDURI WINES is named for the Babylonian goddess of wine (on label).  Owners Dianna and Adam Lee said, "SIDURI began 16 years ago in our native Texas.  We wanted to make Pinot Noir from the finest California vineyards we could find.  We worked years at small, family-owned wineries, to learn everything about growing grapes and making wine.  In 2004 SIDURI celebrated its 10-year anniversary.  We can hardly believe it, but between two wine labels (Siduri and Novy Family Wines) and three beautiful children, we are beyond blessed and beyond busy!  Our small, tireless crew produces over 25 different Pinot Noir wines annually, representing California's largest Pinot Noir focus.  Our relationships with top growers/vineyards stretches from Santa Barbara to Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  Our Pinot Noirs are unfiltered and unfined to maximize the diverse sites and single varietal focus.  Our uncompromised winemaking holds true to our principles--great wine is made in the vineyard: only great grapes produce great wines.  We purchase fruit primarily by the acre, not by the ton and minimal-intervention winemaking promotes rather than overshadows the work in the vineyard.   Recent releases include SIDURI 2008 Russian River Valley (RRV) Pinot Noir ($30) the result of difficult weather and skillfully blending several clones; SIDURI 2007 Amber Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir ($45): "Ultimately, 15 of 21 barrels of this wine were blended for enviable pureness of flavor.  Although a great vintage throughout California, no region benefited as much from outstanding 2007 as the Russian River Valley.   Amber Ridge (usually early ripening) yielded almost 25% less from 2006: Rich plum, wild berries, cola and sassafras hints, beautiful texture,  lush mouth-feel with chewy tannin finish." (368 Cases) *SIDURI 2007 Sonatera Vineyard Pinot Noir $45: "Sonatera's reputation as one of Sonoma Coast's best pinot noir vineyards comes from consistency, distinctness, and producing great wines even in difficult vintages.  2007 was not difficult and produced its most balanced, powerful fruit yet.  Translating this fruit to wine was a winemaker’s dream.  It has aromas and flavors of exotic herbs, earth, menthol, layers of black cherry, tobacco and anise. Tannins slightly more than silky give the wine structure and a long finish."  700 Cases         About NOVY CELLARS: "Our wine enterprise concerned getting family involved.  In 1998, a purchase of some top quality syrah grapes led to founding NOVY CELLARS."  With help from the Novy family, Dianna and Adam make all Novy wines at Siduri’s winery.  The Lees and Dianna’s family (her parents, Adolph and Rose Marie Novy, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Angela, Bryan and Kathy, and Steven and Marie Novy) own Novy and take pride in their Czech heritage, living in the largely Czech community of Ennis, Texas.
*NOVY CELLARS 2008 Russian River Valley Viognier $25: "We capture the beguiling nose, crisp acidity, and pure fruit--the lively spirit of viognier grapes--by picking fairly ripe fruit, fermenting only in stainless steel, and no malolactic fermentation--preserving wonderful fruit and crispness that keep the wine fresh.  It has pear and peach aromas, forward and sweet tasting fruit, and a long, crisp finish.  Serve at the beginning of a meal--or during it."  *NOVY CELLARS 2006 Russian River Valley Syrah $30: "2006 produced some of the finest Novy Syrahs ever--cool enough to retain good grape acidity and warm enough to fully ripen syrah.  We blended three vineyards: 37% Sapphire Hill, 33% Parsons, and 30% Amber Ridge.   This RRV Syrah is smooth, rich, concentrated with layers of blackberry, juicy cherry, and plum flavors.  Underlying is a backbone of minerals and anise with hints of earth.  This wine is plush enough to drink now (especially with some airing) but will certainly improve with 3 to 5 years in the cellar. Without doubt this is the finest RRV Syrah we have thus far produced."  *NOVY CELLARS 2008 Blanc de Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon $25: Dianna and Adam's new wine, the first California winery to make a non-sparkling white Pinot Noir, has been released under their NOVY label.  The 325 cases are available at their Santa Rosa 'warehouse winery,' select restaurants, and premium wine shops nationally.  Dianna explained, “We toured Champagne, France and visited KRUG, where we tasted a still, white Pinot Noir that was resting  in oak before going through the second fermentation. . . and we could taste the amazing quality of the grape.  Ever since then, we’ve wanted to make a still white Pinot Noir.”  The Lees source this pinot noir from Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  “Oregon grapes have better acidity and lower sugars,” explains Adam. “Flavors are brighter and color whiter at lower alcohol levels than from typically riper California fruit and with exceptional acidity.”    SIDURI produces 7500 cases of single vineyard and appellation Pinot Noir annually at $20-$50.  The Lees partnership with Dianna's family produces the similarly priced Novy Family Wines but with a focus on Syrah. SIDURI and NOVY CELLARS Family Wines are available at the winery, fine restaurants and wine shops nationally. SIDURI Winery is open to the public daily for tasting and tour from 10am to 3pm by appointment.   Siduri Wines 980-C Airway Court, Santa Rosa, CA   ph: 707-578-3882 www.siduri.com, www.novyfamilywines.com

KORBEL CALIFORNIA CHAMPAGNE Posts Strong 2009 Sales: Based on 1,331,000 Korbel cases shipped (an increase of 53,300 cases or 4.2 percent over 2008) the preliminary analysis shows Korbel sales growth to be broad based, with significant increases in most major markets, including New York, Florida, Texas and California.  The numbers reflect both the popularity of Korbel California Champagne and the strength of the United States’ champagne/sparkling wine market.   Produced using the premium, time-honored méthode champenoise, in which second fermentation in the bottle imparts fine, persistent bubbles, Korbel California Champagne is the United States’ #1 premium champagne/sparkling wine.  With 15 percent of the market, it outsells its nearest U.S. competitor by nearly two to one. American champagne sales have grown every year for the past seven years--a trend projected to continue well into the new decade.  "Americans clearly appreciate Korbel quality and value, and we appreciate their loyalty," observed President Gary Heck.   Korbel Champagne Cellars (founded 1882) is owned and managed by the Heck family (1954) Korbel and currently makes eight champagnes.

GOODBYE 2009, HELLO 2010--a letter from Judy Jordan:
When I founded J Vineyards & Winery nearly a quarter century ago, I knew I was in for the ride of my life.  From our first vintage of sparkling wine made in an old converted prune processing shed to the launch of our new varietal wine program this year,J has carved out a niche built upon wine excellence and elegant hospitality.  Our success has exceeded my wildest dreams.
I am very proud of this company and it would not have been possible without everyone’s hard work and dedication. From our winemaking, viticulture and administration, to sales, marketing, and hospitality, everyone at J should be proud of what we have accomplished together. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their rock solid support of J Vineyards & Winery.
As an entrepreneur and mother of two, I have worked hard to shape a successful wine company that is the essence of elegance and balance.  Our sparkling wines, featuring the distinctive yellow “J” signature, are instantly recognized around the country by consumers, whether in a restaurant or a retail outlet.
This past year we embarked on a new direction for J.  With the launch of our estate varietal Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines in new packaging, we are staking our legacy on the terroir of Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley.  This unique viticultural appellation is our home. It is where we farm more than 250 acres of cool-climate grapes, planted on a myriad of rootstocks and clones, and all located along the loam and gravel edges of the Russian River and on nearby benches and hillsides.
My roots in the soil come honestly.  As a trained geologist, I have come to know how terroir plays such an important role in the creation of world-class wines. The magnificent alluvial soils found in the Russian River Valley were formed over the millennia and play an important role in our ability to make great wine.  Accompanying me on this journey of exploration are veteran Winemaker George Bursick, and Viticulturist John Erbe. Both have become experts on all aspects of our Russian River Valley terrain, and their dedication certainly shines through in our wines.
While we remain dedicated to our sparkling wine program, our varietal estate wines clearly represent the next generation of J Vineyards & Winery. The new varietal packaging, featuring a more subtle version of our classic “J” paintbrush logo, is designed to distinguish the varietal wines from our sparkling wines.  The new labels reflect all the distinctive elements that comprise the very definition of terroir — soil, water, and air.
This launch of our new varietal program may seem like a gamble in today’s tough business climate.  I assure you, however, that these are the right wines, at the right time, and I remain steadfast in my belief that winemaking excellence and wines of regional distinction will rule the day.
I encourage you to share a taste of our new Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines with your friends and family. The joy of wine discovery is still very much alive, even in these tough times.
Let us all raise a glass of J and toast to a bright New Year.
Cheers,
Judy Jordan, Founder and President

BEAULIEU VINEYARD Winemaker Jeffrey Stambor says, "For more than 100 years, Beaulieu Vineyard has set the standard for crafting California wines that stand among the world’s finest.  It's an exciting time to be a winemaker at Beaulieu Vineyard, and I'm especially proud of the care we've taken to improve our historic Rutherford estate. Our vineyards are a rich source of inspiration, the creative spark that helps us guide our wines to reveal the distinctive flavor and personality of each terroir.  As we introduce our 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon wines, I hope you are as excited about them as I am.  Our relentless attention to detail, our depth of knowledge of our vineyards and our ability to blend handcraftsmanship with innovation, state-of-the-art technology has resulted in wines that express the richness and balance that have become synonymous with Beaulieu Vineyard."

DUCKHORN Vineyards: Co-founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has spent a quarter century establishing itself as one of North America's premier producers of Bordeaux varietal wines. From its modest inaugural vintage of 800 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon and 800 cases of Merlot in 1978, to its addition of Sauvignon Blanc in 1982, Duckhorn Vineyards has crafted a tradition of quality and excellence.   Today, the winery's seven estate vineyards are located in alluvial fans of the Napa Valley and on the coveted slopes of Howell Mountain. The shallow and rocky alluvial soil drains easily, forcing the vines to send roots deep in search of water. The rocks retain the day's heat, bringing relief to the vine during cold spring mornings and foggy summer nights. Because of its topography, soils, and climate, Howell Mountain has distinctly different grape-growing conditions than the valley floor. Often during summer months, the maritime fog seeping into the Napa Valley below will not reach the mountaintop, giving Howell Mountain more sunlight and moderate temperatures. As a result, winemaker Bill Nancarrow has numerous vineyard blocks to choose from, each offering markedly different flavor profiles.

DECOY 2007 Napa Valley Red Wine, $30: Since its inaugural vintage in 1985, Decoy, Duckhorn Vineyards' sister label, has taken an important place in the Duckhorn family of wines. Like the wines of Duckhorn Vineyards, Decoy is produced from classic Bordeaux varietals. With a new composition every vintage, this unique red is blended from a changing combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot to create an engaging Napa Valley red wine.  Crafted to drink upon release, Decoy benefits from the rigorous standards established for producing Duckhorn Vineyards' estate wine program. Vineyard lots used in making Decoy are harvested, vinified and barrel-aged separately so that winemaker Bill Nancarrow has a full palette of flavors to choose from for the final blend. In addition, the Decoy varies by vintage. The harvest and the quality of available fruit determine the quantity of Decoy made in a given year. As a result, this well-structured red wine offers classic Bordeaux varietal flavors such as black cherry and plum, backed by notes of cedar, leather, tobacco and pepper.

PARADUXX 2006 Napa Valley Red Wine $48: Duckhorn Wine Company's Paraduxx is a unique Napa Valley Red Wine in the tradition of the world's great blends like the Super Tuscan Italian wines and Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blends of Australia.   Paraduxx's goal is to craft a world-class blend with a distinctly Californian personality by using Zinfandel, a grape synonymous with California, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Paraduxx was created so winemakers could explore other styles without detracting from Duckhorn's focus on Bordeaux varietals.  In 1994, Paraduxx sourced four tons of Zinfandel from the 100-year-old vines of Napa's Korte Vineyard. This Zinfandel was blended with Duckhorn Vineyards' own Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah to  create the first Paraduxx vintage. Since then, Paraduxx has grown to include other vineyards, like Rector Creek, and the winemaking team has been so pleased with the Rector Creek fruit that its Zinfandel has been used as the basis for Paraduxx proprietary red.  From the first vintage, Paraduxx has dedicated itself to finding the optimum blend, using combinations of Merlot and Cabernet Franc to enhance the core pairing of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Noting the jammy quality of valley Zinfandel, versus the tannic spiciness of mountain grown grapes, Paraduxx also experiments with blending fruit from distinct vineyard lots at differing elevations.

GOLDENEYE 2006 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir $55: The Goldeneye winery (founded 1990) produces world class Pinot Noir wines. It is located in the heart of Anderson Valley along the migratory pathway of the common Goldeneye duck.  In 1990, Dan and Margaret Duckhorn embraced their growing passion for Pinot Noir with a vision to craft a distinctively California Pinot Noir to match the stature of their acclaimed Duckhorn Merlot.  Over the next six years, they experimented with fruit from the Russian River, Sonoma, Carneros and Anderson Valley appellations, respecting the challenging grape's remarkable ability to reflect its terroir.  With its cool ocean fog, clay soil, and long, mild days, the Anderson Valley appellation had all the ingredients for producing world-class Pinot Noir.   In 1996, the first 80-acre estate vineyard was selected, and the winery was christened Goldeneye after the duck whose migratory path crosses the region.  After a decade of research, planning and experimentation, Goldeneye's inaugural vintage was announced in March of 2000.  Since then, the winery has grown to four estate vineyards, 149 acres planted to vines with 19 different clonal varieties to enjoy the benefits of varying microclimates. By focusing on the careful cultivation of its estate vineyards, Goldeneye has been able to grow, while still remaining true to its philosophy of being a small, quality-driven winery. To maintain the integrity of each vineyard block and to allow for flexibility in the final blend, Goldeneye harvests, barrel ages and vinifies each lot separately. In addition, Goldeneye practices crop sensitivity with vertical shoot positioning and a dedication to low yields. Under the guidance of winemaker Zach Rasmuson, vineyard practices have been further refined to benefit the estate program. A Pinot Noir veteran, Zach brings his love of farming and his obsession with the varietal to Goldeneye. A strong advocate of the Anderson Valley and its potential to produce some of the finest Pinot Noirs in the world, Zach underscores his belief that quality is determined in the vineyard with a gentle, minimalist approach to winemaking. Zach has worked hard to define the evolving style of Goldeneye. With yields as low as two tons per acre, Goldeneye cultivates extracted, elegant fruit. The goal is to fashion a wine that expresses the depth and character of the Anderson Valley. In winemaking, Zach focuses on achieving a balance between fruit, extraction and oak. Working closely with the finest coopers to identify wood sources and blends that suit Goldeneye's style, Zach generally uses between 70 to 100 percent new oak from the world's finest coopers. Wood is sourced primarily from Allier, although Zach works with Vosges, Nevers and Bertanges as well. The toasting program is primarily medium, with some toasted heads. Founded on a commitment to quality, Goldeneye brings the tradition of viticultural excellence established by Duckhorn Vineyards in the Napa Valley to the Pinot Noirs of the Anderson Valley. With each new vintage, Goldeneye continues its evolution toward becoming one of the world's premier producers of Pinot Noir.

KENWOOD's 2007 Sonoma and Reserve Zinfandels experienced harvest trials and tribulations with erratic weather.  Still, winemaker and vineyardist decisions were key even if somewhat adventurous.  All's well that ends well--and it did. .

KENWOOD 2007 MERLOTS SHOW INFLUENCE: "Wine reflects its origins--influenced by the vintage, grapes and weather.  Kenwood's Sonoma and Reserve Merlots show 2007 influences with their powerful fruit and extraordinary structure."  ¶  Sonoma's dry winter and temperate 2007 growing season culminated in a later autumn harvest.  V.P. Healy reports, "An early start and strong winds at flowering caused a small crop with small berries."  Near-ideal growing conditions achieved full grape maturity with balanced acidity and the 20%-less-than-typical crop gave concentrated fruit with elevated tannins to produce more richness and structure than usual." ¶  Handcrafting of the two Merlots make clearly defined styles.  Kenwood's Sonoma County Merlot combined vineyard lots from Sonoma Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley for generous fruit and easy drinking.  Aged 22 months in small French and American oak, miniscule Cabernet Sauvignon was added for complexity.  Kenwood's Reserve Merlot blended selected exceptional vineyard lots from Dry Creek Valley and Sonoma Valley.  Aged 22 months in small French oak barrels, it is a Merlot for anyone who appreciates Merlot of uncommon intensity, complexity and aging potential."

NAPA RIDGE has two new releases for your pleasure.

BONNY DOON creative owner Randall Grahm has released another of his cleverly named and labeled wines for your pleasure, the “Le Pousseur” Syrah.   Randall says that syrah is the most noble grape of red Rhône varieties, traveling farther and more successfully than any other.  It is a native of Southwest France and "syrah has been loved for centuries in the guise of Northern Rhône wines such as Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas and St. Joseph," he says.  "Its   deep, dark robe, meaty, ageworthy texture and evocative perfume reminiscent of fresh game, pepper and violets gives it a place of pride among the finest wine varieties in the world."  As for me, I especially like this wine with the grilled venison backstrap that my son prepares so deliciously.  If you are not so fortunate to have a son who hunts and prepares his own game, you can purchase a nice beef rib-eye steak at the market.

VALLEY OF THE MOON 2008 CARNEROS PINOT NOIR, (13.5%), $20 "Aging wine in small oak barrels is a time-honored winemaking tradition, but one that tests the judgment of every winemaker. When should the wine go into barrels? Should the barrels be new or used? What kind(s) of oak to use? How long should the wine remain in barrels? In truth, every wine is different and there are no ironclad rules. However, as the just-released 2008 Valley of the Moon Carneros Pinot Noir demonstrates, the art of oak can create a truly beguiling wine.  ¶  Pinot Noir is distinguished by its elegant fruit and velvety texture, and particular care during barrel aging is needed to preserve those elements. The very cool Carneros region near San Francisco Bay, from which Valley of the Moon primarily sources Pinot Noir, produced superb grapes in 2008; voluptuous in character, yet with fine balancing acidity. Soon after fermentation, winemaker Greg Winter decided to age the young wine in 30% new barrels and 70% two-to-five-year-old barrels to limit oak influence. The wine matured in a combination of French oak (to impart vanilla) and Eastern European oak (to impart spice) barrels for only 10 months, just long enough to gain subtle complexity without overwhelming the fruit. A small amount of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir in the final blend contributed an additional nuance to the aromas and flavors.    The 2008 Valley of the Moon Carneros Pinot Noir leads with forward aromas of cherry and violet, accented by lavender and vanilla notes. Fresh cherry and raspberry fruit, together with a hint of clove, highlight the generous flavors. Vibrant and silky smooth, this deftly balanced Pinot Noir culminates in a graceful, lingering finish.  ¶  Valley of the Moon Winery welcomes visitors daily to its historic cellar in the Sonoma Valley. In addition to Pinot Noir, the winery produces Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, Syrah, Zinfandel, Rosato di Sangiovese and Cuvée de la Luna, a proprietary Bordeaux-inspired blend.

TRINCHERO Napa Valley wines (please see FEATURE above) use the variety to interpret the site and the site to interpret the variety.   Winemaker Mario Monticelli and I tasted six of his rich, ripe, layered and luscious wines--all  flawless.  Each wine was so delicious I struggled to pick a favorite. I can only suggest that you do the same.
